DJI FPV
Verified1 review
The closest thing to flying you'll ever experience – As the promotion states, 'For eons, man has dreamt of flying, now it's possible!' The DJI FPV is a First Person View drone, that is opperated using a pair of googles and one of a couple of controllers. Unlike your 'standard' drone, you don't watch the drone from your spot, instead, you are for want of a better word, flying, as what you see through the goggles is what the camera sees, exactly.
The DJI FPV definitely redefines flying. You are essentially transported to the drone and are flying it, if you were able to actually fit inside.
Let's consider what this offers. No more looking from 30-100 metres away, tryign not to move wrong and hit something. The DJI FPV puts you in the vehicle. The limitation is your field of view, is what the camera sees. So a very necessary activity prior to flying is a quick look arounf for obstacles and the like, paying special attention for powerlines.
So, what makes this so much better? Other than the first person view, simple . . . Power Speed and Control.
Power is the key to this drone. With four tuned electric motors, spinning up rotor blades that would happily slice you, the DJI FPV rips through the sky, offering ultra rapid acceleration and turning.
Most drones travel at around 25-40km/h, some a tad more. The DJI FPV takes this and says, 'Here, hold my beer', as it goes from 0 to 110km/h in about 2 seconds. Seriously, this drone is a total speed freak. Herein lies a major danger. This travels so fast, you have very little time to respond, it something goes wrong. And remember, you cannot see to the sides or behind you, only straight ahead. Imagine driving a car where the ONLY clear window was the windscreen.
Then we have control. This is going to take a bit. So, you have the goggles on, you are seeing the view from the front of the drone, how do I make it do all this stuff? Well, you get options here.
The DJI FPV comes with a standard controller, which is similar to many other drone controllers, but it's DJI, so it has more. This controller is the usual 2 stick affair, with dedicated buttons for photos and videos and the ability to gimbal the camera. This controller is more than adequate and will get you flying nicely.
Then there is the DJI Motion Controller. THIS . . . This is the epitome of freedom. This controller is an optional extra and if you asked me, it is one you NEED, if you want to get the most out of your DJI FPV.
This controller fits in the palm of you hand. You have a trigger of the front and a few miscellaneous buttons for photos, return to home etc, but then the capabilities of this controller are truly unleashed. As the name suggests, this is a motion controller. You tilt you hand forward, the drone moves forward, add in some acceleration from that trigger and you are taking off like a rocket. Turning is also motion controlled, so a roll of your wrist to the left or right will turn the drone in that direction. All with the one hand.
With a cieling of 6000m and a range of up to around 8km, this drone will go places other drone only dream of.
offering three modes of flight, the DJI FPV takes you from beginner to expert, while ensuring you always have the ability to just stop in place to catch your breath.
Normal mode offers the most control, a more sedate flight, with all sensors looking to protect youyr little friend.
Sport mode lets you turn up the heat, faster takeoffs, sharper turns, a much more exhilrating flight.
Manual mode (Madness mode) removes all restrictions. the only limit to your flight excitement level, is you and your skill.
Of course, as you have cameras to see where you are headed, these also offer very nice quality images and videos. Capturing that wild flight through a canyon or tunnel never looked so good.
Whilst it isn't the cheapest drone out there, what you get for your money is unquestionably worth it.
Whether you are flying for photos, to record videos or simply to experience what it would truly be like to fly, the DJI FPV is a drone you really need to consider.
* Note * Being a first person view drone, there are very strict controls on the flying of these drones. This is a direct result of the drone being an FPV, meaning the person flying the drone cannot 'maintain a watch' on the drone, as they are wearing the goggles. You are restricted to indoor flying or flying as a part of a model aircraft club, at their facilities.
