Great for off-grid camping – We've had ours for about 7 years now and use every year for a few weeks at a time in the middle of summer. Insulation very thin so you do need to keep out of the sun - one day I'll make an insulation bag for it. Running on gas at max cool it uses a 4.5kg bottle in about 11 days. Running on battery it won't last long at all, let alone remain… Read more
cold so I don't waste my time. Electricity obviously best but rarely do we have power when camping. We use for 2-3 weeks at a time in the middle of an Australian summer - 30-40 degrees most days.
We stock with thin and flat vacuum sealed frozen meals/meat and drop in like a filing cabinet for best results. We then eat as they defrost, typically from the front as that's away from the cooler unit.
3 x 375ml cans or 1 thin wine bottle fit on top of the cooler unit and will easily freeze if left overnight.
It's taken a beating with 10,000+ km off-road driving and apart from a few dents and broken 'feet' it has not missed a beat.
I wash out with soapy water and store with the lid slightly open when not in use (2mm thick cardboard along front edge). Quick wipe and it's ready to go camping again.
For what this unit is I have no complaints and would by another to meet our camping needs, running on gas off-grid.
Can't live with out it but need to know where you can get it repaired to – Where do you get it repaired and is it worth it to getting a new one to love the fridge to Show details
Poor Quality Gas Fridge – Looks good with a nice white cabinet and front door like a RV style 3 way fridge. The quality is very poor, both its weak cooling ability and getting the gas to light. To start the gas you need to preheat it with the 12v or 230v first and the 12v draws a massive 7.4 amps. The fridge failed right after the warranty ran out. The repair man said it… Read more
was rubbish and would cost more to re gas than it was worth. The coils on the back are rusty too after 2 years. Don't waste your money on a Gasmate, this one is going to the rubbish tip.
Its great for Victoria – I often don't get enough sun to keep batteries going for compressor fridges so I got this little beauty, its so simple not having to bother with keeping batteries charged. I like that it does not accidentally freeze my stuff as I prefer a fridge to a freezer. I don't like my butter or cheese frozen. The warranty decreases to 3 months if used… Read more
commercially and from research it is the electrical system that is not designed for permanent operation. So for southerners I say yes its a great little fridge. I love it!!!
heaps smaller capacity than stated – if you are looking for a 3 way fridge stand clear of the gasmate camping 3 way fridges (gas) they state that the 50 ltr are 50 ltrs when they are actually 40.5 ltr and the 42ltr are actually 35.8 ltr . when I phoned them up they told me they were just ever so slightly under stated capacity and couldn't give me a explaination why they are misleading consumers untrue information . so think twice about the fridge you buy especially from gasmate .
A reasonably good unit for a great price – I have had the 35 litre fridge for 4-5 years now with no problems other than the little hinge pins popping out occasionally which is only a minor issue. The 3-way system is a reliable technology in that it is a solid-state system with no moving parts except for the small fan that runs when using 12V DC. I presume the fan circulates air through the… Read more
heat exchanger more effectivley making it it more efficient. On 240V the unit can it works well, but don't expect that much cooling power on gas. They are not compressor fridges so don't expect it have the same cooling power. These type of fridges prefer to stay put, I don't think they like being tilted, so they may not be the best choice while travelling long distances. PROs:- Compact unit. run time on gas is good. A 4kg Gas bottle will last 2 weeks. Having 3 power options is a bonus. The cost. CONs:- Don't expect it to hold its cold too well in summer heat over 36 degrees celcius. By late afternoon you will find the frost has disappeared off the cooling element and the contents will be cool, not cold. I sometimes tape cardboard to the outside of my unit for added insulation which helps. An insulated cover might have been a good accessory for these fridges but they don't seem to make one for it. Uses a fair amount of power when on electricity. Approx 90Watts, so running off camping solar is not likely.
Most Reliable 4WD Fridge Available – We have used 3 way fridges for just on 30 years. Our first was a Finch 3 way that we finally got rid of 18 months ago. It still worked, but was getting a bit tired. A Gasmate 35lt has taken its place and boy the difference is amazing, especially on 12v where the old Finch was almost useless. It uses less amps on 12v and less gas, but seems… Read more
more efficient than the old one.
We prefer a 3 way Fridge to a compressor type as many years ago the company I worked for was a service agent for one of the popular brands.
There were just too many horror stories of people out in the middle of nowhere who lost all their food because the fridge packed it in.
With the Gasmate we run 12v when traveling and then when we setup camp, simply attach the gas bottle. We carry a 2Kg gas bottle which has lasted over 2 weeks.
If staying in a motel or a powered site we plug it in to 240v.
These 3 way fridges are NOT freezers, so don't compare them to the compressor type fridges. We modified our eating habits when away, taking only a few days fresh refrigerated food, then relying on cans or packet food. When back in civilization we get another couple of days fresh food.
This way we are not totally reliant on the fridge and should it fail, we don't have to change our itinerary or wait around for costly repairs.
The Finch lasted almost 30 years, so looking forward to a good run from the Gasmate. reliable, inexpensive, energy efficient Not a freezer
