Haier HDW15F2 Series

This Dishwasher looked good in black and seemed great value. It worked okay for the first 2 years and 9 months then the drain wouldn't turn off. It was still under the 3 year warranty so assumed it would be fixed or replaced. Unfortunately the warranty was a waste of time as the retailer we bought it from said we had to agree to pay almost $200 if they decide it is 'our fault'. I was not willing to agree to this so they would not help us. The dishwasher was taken away for scrap after getting no where with the warranty. Personally, I would never buy another Haier product again, they are cheap for a reason. Poor man pays twice in this case.
Purchased in at The Good Guys for $649.
So unsurprisingly our Samsung died almost on que, ten years after buying, much like the Washing machine that was a few months older, the Samsung Dishwasher had been having issues for a while with the door mechanism, then finally flashed the dreaded code for failed water heater. Given the time of year and limited funds these days, the nice fancy Bosch wasn't an option, and considering we not long ago got a Haier Washer that is perfectly ok, we figured either we get another Samsung, or we try out this brand and see how we go. It did take nearly two weeks to come, which I was quite disappointed about, looking at your Farmers.co.nz, you should carry stock... but I digress.
From the outset you can see this dishwasher is cheaper, the sliding drawers are a bit clunky and are far from smooth, the height adjust for the top shelf is really weird and is not even close to the quality of the same thing on a samsung or better, rather you sort of have to pull it right out then wedge it back onto the runners on different wheels, very odd, a drawer with some brackets on the side would be so much easier Haier and it can't cost so much more surely. There is no water leak guard device built into the inlet hose so you're connect direct from the tap to the machine which lets hope isn't a problem is this town with very high water pressure.
The overall design however if fine, its a nice colour, Satina, which is basically a plastic version of grey stainless steel, kinda. The buttons are all touch, and the controls are simple and make sense, you cycle through by way of a small orange LED above each option, Auto, Heavy, Medium, Glass etc etc, and below those you have the 'modifier' options which include extra dry (Awesome), Sanitise and a couple of others. It has six cycles, plus the four modifiers, so you do get plenty of options. Internally the baskets are average sized, the top one has a few tilted spaces for glass and cups etc, plus racks for plates, bowls so long as they aren't too big, none of the tines on the top rack are able to be moved so you're stuck with what Haier think a top rack should be. The bottom rack has two rows, the back row is adjustable and each set of tines can be lowered completely, but the front row which takes up half the width cannot be. The dishwasher cleaner dispenser is on the right side of the door and has a slide up, not a pop open, option, so you can I guess stack a tallish plate in there and it will still open and pop out your cleaner of choice. The left side is a blank space where the basket for cuttlery sits, its adequate, though lacks much space for utensils, and the little squares designed to hold cuttlery are small, so if you have knives or forks etc with wide handles you may also encounter a challenge wedging them in there. You do have to jiggly the utensils and cuttlery about abit as you load the machine to prevent taller items and the middle spray arm having a wee accident.
On the topic of spray arms there are three, one at the bottom pointing up, one in the middle which appears to direct water both up and down, and at the very top of the machine is another smallish arm that appears to direct more water down onto items in the top basket primarily. The additional third/upper spray arm is a nice to have, normal on higher end machines I think, so an unexpected item here.
In terms of cleaning performance, I cannot fault it so far. For day to day dinner ware, cups, glasses and all the usual things this machine has performed very well. We use those blue and yellow tabs with the red spot, so not the posh ones, but also not just plain powder. I add rinse aid though in theory shouldn't need to, and the machine enables you to adjust the dose of rinse aid and the instructions are clearly shown in the user manual. I haven't yet had a single item come out not sparkly clean, I cannot fault the quality of the clean so far, and have mostly used either the medium or 60 min cycle, with the extra dry option. I haven't put anything too challenging in there, maybe the baskets from the airfryer are the worst, but i do hand wash these first, it will be interesting to see what its performance is like over the coming christmas rush, anything is possible.
This Haier allows a number of other features from higher end machines, including the door that opens (quite a lot) at the almost end of the cycle, it seems to rely primarily on that to dry dishes, but you can turn this opening off so it would be interesting to see how well it dries if the door stays shut. It also has WIFI control by way of the SmartHQ app which I believe is the one Haier uses, it enables you to remotely turn on the machine, select the cycle and the add-ons and then start it, you can also use the timer via the app or on the machine to schedule the start time to take advantage of free or cheaper power.
My only real criticism of this machine is that it is in my view too loud. Where we have it installed one side as well as the front are open/exposed, so it is not fully enclosed in an under bench space, we had to remove the top section which I guess isn't all that unusual, but there isn't a lot of padding in there to dampen sound, and you can certainly hear it when it is running, the configuration of dishes within seems to make no odds, nor does the load size generally, its just not a quiet machine in my situation. Maybe if it were built in on all sides the noise would be dampened more by cupboards as others do say it is very quiet. That is however my only critique of it, its cleaning performance has been excellent, the choice of cycles is good and more than meets our every day needs.
Personally I have no hesitation in recommending a Haier product, both of the ones we now have, plus a dryer actually, have all been purchased in 2025, so it will be interesting to see if they make it to 2035.
Follow-up · Hi, so an email from Product Review asking for further thoughts that they say come from readers of my earlier review of the Haier Dishwasher, so I'll answer in the order they have been given: How's the auto-open door dryer? Excellent, you can set it up in the app or via the dishwasher itself, it opens at the end of the cycle, well sort of the end, depending on how you set it I suspect, but I would say without fault except some plastic items (but by no means all or even many) all the items come out of the dishwasher completely dry. Any issues with high water pressure? So far none at all, I've installed a leak detector device behind the dishwasher just incase, but so far no issues have arisen. The valve it must have onboard is pretty good, you can hear when the water is going in but also when it cuts off. I imagine the test might be in the winter when the water supply will be significantly colder, that might be a test for the pipes, but all in all no issues that I've noticed with the high pressure (the same is true for the Haier washing machine, same high pressure, and no issues with that so far either). How's the SmartHQ app working? No problems, it's a little slow and clunky, but no issues other than a bit of a lag between selecting a setting in the app and that setting appearing in the options before proceeding, it seems to also default to Eco everything (which is annoying to me because those cycles are so long), but you can change the cycle, the add on cycle parts (intensive, extra dry, Hygiene etc), and you can then select go. It shows you the cycle time, and as the cycle runs it shows time remaining. I did think oddly from the user guide you had to press a button on the dishwasher itself before it would connect to the app every time, or at least that's what the wording seems to say, but no, the main unit can be 'off' and you can turn it on and select and cycle and start It without needing to press the wifi button on the unit, so you truely can control it remotely. I've only done this in the home, I've not tried it when somewhere else and not connected to my own home network. But the app seems to work well, if they could fix the bit of lag that would be great. So I hope those responses are helpful to others if you are considering this product. I am really surprised because word of mouth hasn't always been kind and some reviews are likewise, but I've personally found these products to be at least as reliable, usable, and functional as the Samsungs they replaced. Longevity is questionable I guess, but who knows what tomorrow brings, for now I have absolutely no regrets about choosing Haier products. None at all.
Follow-up · So following up, after days of back and forth emails with GE/Haier people, they have advised the following, copy and pasted from their email. But just to be clear to future shoppers, this product no longer enables you to remotely operate this dishwasher unless you are standing next to it to manually turn it on, or off, or to ensure no kids or animals are in it.... So the sales spiel about remote operation is no longer true, this is a purposeful change made by the manufacturer. If you have an expectation that you will be able to control your dishwasher remotely as is shown in their adverts then that is not how this will work. You can operate it via an app yes, but only if you stand next to it. Here's what they eventually said after days and days, an admission of a change in the app functionality that does in fact make a key selling point of this product a nonstarter: Hi Michael, Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry to hear that, Unfortunately yes this safety feature has been introduced in the latest firmware update, Here is the reasons why the remote mode on the HDW15F2S1 (and many similar Haier/smart dishwashers) must be turned on each time: It is a safety feature designed to prevent accidental or remote operation. Here are the specific details regarding this behavior: Safety Restriction: By requiring physical activation of the "Remote" button on the dishwasher, it ensures that someone is present to confirm the dishwasher is loaded correctly, the door is securely closed to prevent flooding, and there are no obstructions (like a child or pet inside) before it starts via an app. Default "OFF" State: As a safety precaution, the dishwasher reverts to the "remote off" state whenever the door is opened or a cycle completes. This prevents the dishwasher from being started remotely after someone has loaded or unloaded it. Remote Mode Timeout: If the remote mode is enabled but the cycle is not started via the app within a certain timeframe, the dishwasher will deactivate remote mode for safety reasons. If you have any further questions, Please do not hesitate to reply to this email. Based on this I am hoping Farmers will take this back, remote functionality was a key part of my purchase decision, and now this has been removed then I am not getting what I've paid for at all.
Follow-up · So a further update, it's been about four weeks and an app update has taken place. It does appear Haier folks (or GE who seems to be the developers of this app) realised something was amiss and functionality has now reverted back to what it was before, with one small exception, evidently you do still have to manually power on the dishwasher, I was told you could do this in the morning before you leave the house and then activate a wash cycle up to twelve hours later. I don't think this works, or at least it doesn't for me, yes, if I power it on the cycles now display correctly, but as soon as it powers itself off again (seems to be about 5 minutes later if you do nothing) that's it, it reverts back to not being able to do anything.... maybe it is me, maybe I'm an id*ot, or maybe there is some unobvious way to get this twelve hour thing to work, but so far I can't figure it out. The thing that frustrates me most was that with all the goodwill in the world I gave this product a 5 star review, I found it did a great job cleaning all the items I threw in there, it was great having the door open feature, everything was flawlessly dry in the morning, the dispenser is well positioned and works without fault (unlike Samsungs), and I genuinely thought maybe some of those bad reviews were just a dud/lemon machine, and that may still be true, but what I can't understand is a company this big making a change like that, insisting it wasn't an issue in terms of functionality and then backtracking on that because I suppose enough of us complained about it, and they issue a fix but that fix doesn't really fix the issue. App development shouldn't be this hard, it shouldn't be this challenging to get something so basic right, but it seems GE are not really all that great in this space. The dishwasher still does a great job cleaning dishes, but is this what I paid for and does it have the specs I purchased, no it doesn't. Would I buy another product from Haier, or one that relies on this GE App, unlikely veering into the not a chance space.
Purchased in at Farmers Trading Co NZ for $799.
Dishwasher did not clean properly from the very first clean, I tried tablets, powder and then liquid and nothing would clean the dishes. I tried different configurations, less of a load, half loads, and all different settings, I called The Good Guys 6 days after purchase to be told that I needed a service call before they would consider an exchange! 2 weeks later (as I am regional) a service agent came and throughout the course of the day, monitored 3 different cycles, all with different cleaning methods (tablet, liquid and powder, and noted the lack of dissolving of the solid based products and lack of cleaning on all functions and types. I finally was notified two days ago of yet another store credit, however when I went in store today, they had no record and was told that I will still have to wait until they contact me, all the while having an ineffective machine. I will never purchase a Haier or a Fisher and Paykel (which I have used for washing and clothes drying for over 20 years) again. So disappointed as this machine as so quiet and I loved the open door to dry functions!

Best choice for the $$$ – We had to replace a Technica (Bellissimo) that for the 2 time had rusting baskets and more recently a busted dispenser due to dropping a plate on it. So we weren't looking to spend a whole lot of money considering even some of the best brands/models had reviews that expressed all kinds of issues and poor backup service. The Haier however, had pretty good reviews (or at least reviews where we were willing to accept the negatives) and the price was what we were willing to pay for such an appliance. The online ordering, payment and delivery were great from Appliances Online. The dishwasher itself was as easy to install as any. I was actually surprised to see a few simple little "quality of life" features I didn't expect from a cheaper priced product like plastic clips on the rear to hold cables/hoses should you need. But other more up-market features like the self-opening door after the cycle has finished which I have generally only seen on more expensive machines is a little bit of luxury I was impressed with too. This machine in its freestanding form with the top left on was about 50mm taller than our old machine which made for a better fit in the space our builders provided. This made for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance in our kitchen, no more unsightly large gaps. The operation of the machine itself is intuitive in my opinion, logical I would say. Simply put there are 2 rows of options. The top row contains the program selections, and the second row contains extended or truncated features to be applied to the program you choose. You adjust each row by pressing the relative >> buttons which progress the selection from left to right with a little LED underneath as it moves along. So, press the power button, select your desired program/extras and press start/play. The machine starts and shows a countdown timer (which seemed to be a huge gripe of many people when reviewing other machines that don't have this feature) and away you go. During its operation the machine is very quiet, we can easily have it running while going about our normal routine. In fact, our plan from now on is to put it on before bedtime so that the plastics have a better chance of drying. Depending on the program there does however seem to be times early on where the volume increases during what sounds like high pressure water blasting. I haven't read about every feature of the machine, but I assume it's a part of the particular program selection that's designed to loosen stubborn food particles. It doesn't last long, and it doesn't happen throughout the entire cycle. Unfortunately, this won't be a definitive review for many people because we like to rinse and remove loose food from our dishes before we "sanitise" them in the dishwasher. We do this to avoid having that old dishwasher-cooked food smell in the kitchen/living area and we never really have to clean the machine itself by doing it this way. So as far as heavy-duty cycles on dishes and pots that are just scraped and placed in the machine, we can't comment. We typically use the 70 min cycle which is the 60-minute cycle plus the extra drying feature and if we do the overnight wash the only water left on the dishes is what gets trapped in lips/crevasse areas that can't be faced down to drain properly. Even then it's not much. In regard to longevity, I have no idea since we've only had the machine for about a month as of this review. I will update it should we come across any major issues. At this stage we couldn't be happier with the product and to be honest that shouldn't surprise us because we also have a Haier refrigerator that we bought as a stand in while we were building our new house. That was over 4 years ago now and we kept it because it's one of the best fridges we've had. Haier for the win it seems!
Two years on and this dishwasher is still in perfect condition and working flawlessly. No parts have broken, no rust has formed on the racks, and it still operates like it did when new.
Awful product – This dishwasher is the worst unfortunately, it doesn't wash properly leaving dried on dirt, the dishwasher tablet holder doesn’t release effectively so doesn’t dissolve, it’s very noisy and to top it all it now makes a loud noise when you open it fully. So regret this purchase but old dishwasher died suddenly and this is all we could afford in this climate plus really is a first world problem.

5/2/26: A quick further not. At the end of last week the APP that controls this was updated, and now the ability to power it on and select cycles has ceased. It shows a default selection for a cycle, Eco, that I don't want because nearly four hours, and the other cycles can only be accessed by selecting start on the Eco, then going back to the main screen, and pausing it and changing the cycle, but the options it gives are not the cycles options my dishwasher has. I've reached out to the developer for the App, which seems to be something to do with GE Appliances who must be based in the USA because they seem to not understand what I'm saying, though its in English, they keep saying I should call their 1800 number in the USA and then of course they have said it is probably my phone/device and I should uninstalled, reinstalled, etc etc. All of that I'd already done, so what was a good start has moved into a very lacking experience. I bought this product because it included remote functionality via the app, but if as now seems to be the case that app only works if you stand next to the DW and power it on manually then it sort of defeats the point, which is what I've said to the people who are emailing me. So I'm disappointed by the experience of this, I think most 'help desk' type people are probably used to dealing with st^pid people, but we aren't all that, and sometimes we know enough to try the basic fixes before we call them. Anyway, I'm hoping another app update may appear that addresses what is clearly a problem of their creation.
