I recently ( April 2024) purchased some Black Bottle Brandy, which I have drunk for many years, and this later one is very much lighter in colour and I feel does not have the usual depth. Has anyone else noticed this? JK

I have an old bottle of Hardie’s Black Bottle Brandy that my late father had and is unopened, not sure how old but could be 20 years or more. What is the shelf like for this brandy?

Hi Paul, I can only suggest you open the bottle and sample the brandy, if nice, keep drinking and enjoy. I did not enjoy the bottle purchased a year or so ago, however I suspect some years can be good and other years not so good, I guess I was unlucky. If you do enjoy, give them a good review, honest opinions matter. Cheers and enjoy.

Prior to opening that bottle I would contact 'Vok Beverages' ( external link  ) who now own Black Bottle Brandy and see what it's worth because Brandy, like a good woman, only improves with age. :)

Roses66,

Unfortunately - not quite true.

Brandy will improve in the barrel for up to about 18 or so years (after that the tannins tend to take over and the spirit starts to "dry" out).

Once in a bottle - there is no change at all.
