Warranty is as worthless as the outboard – Long story short just avoid Honda Marine altogether. Their dealers have no interest in really helping. They just want to take carbs off and clean them. When you're at the end of your tether and reach out to customer service at Honda Marine they don't listen either. Joyce was the person I'm speaking about specifically. Completely missed details… Read more

that I wrote in email and told her clearly over the phone.

I'm stuck with a 3 year old outboard, under warranty but can't get any help from Honda Marine and their dealers. Having to do my own repairs and pay for parts is just depressing. Don't buy Honda

Crappy outboard – Motor has had problems staying running since brand new has had 2 carburetors on it and has been to the machanic 6 times this year for carburetor repair and work. The carb on it now is from March of this year and still has problems. Now the motor doesn’t even start or run at all. Would never buy again. Yamaha Yamaha Yamaha Show details

Bad Paint! – We had issues with the paint peeling off our 2014 20hp Honda. Next to impossible to get help from the dealer or manufacturer. Seems I was able to get conversations with people from all over the world but no help!!! Will put a fabric cover over the cowling - at least no more free advertising for Honda.

First time to have a poor Honda experience – I love the Honda brand. Well built, robust and very reliable, until I bought a Honda BF20. Water pump failed and despite being in warranty period, dealer refused to honour this. Repairs cost about 1/5th of a new engine and included new thermostat, water pump etc. Went on annual holiday and engine overheated immediately. Repairs this time were 1/2 the cost of a new engine. For an engine with less the 50 hours since new, very disappointing.  Show details

Good engine nice features, 3 sets of dual engines have served well on charter Cat – I have had some experience with Honda Bf20d outboards. They are fitted to a 6.5 tonne Seawind Catamaran used for bareboat charter work. I really like the electric lifts! the electric start & the torquey performance. Mine are fitted with high thrust props. The first pair were fitted to the boat new in 2001. Then replaced about 2006 with another… Read more ·  1

pair. Then last year (2014) we fitted two new ones after one was lost after fouling a boy line & being dragged off the mount into the drink & not long after the other one dropped a valve ( we didn't investigate the cause, just replaced it too) as ttheybwere both about 8 years old. So we had good service from them. The latest ones are very economical, more than the old engines & run reliably. My only complaint is the fasteners on the engine rust easily as they are not stainless, but our great dealer in Brisbane, Outboards, RIBS & Marine put a very good rust proof coating over the engine under the cowling & it is working well to stop corrosion. Honda BF20 broken cam timing pulley and bent valve – Composite cam timing pulley broke after only 25 hrs and 1 yr. Surely they are supposed to last longer than that. Replaced bent exhaust valve and cam pulley myself so I could continue my holiday. I will be buying 2 aluminium Scotland manufactured pulleys like all the other smart BF20 owners are doing. (Alan young engineering) See other posts on… Read more

rib-net etc. Cant afford to bend valves again with my 2 outboards. Also rubber tell-tail hose came off and wet the motor until it stopped but that is another story. Same thing happened to a friends BF20. Not that happy. Quiet, Good fuel economy. Plastic parts can cause you to cancel your holiday or make you row long distances.

Honda BF20 CAM pulley failure – I have a 2008 BF20D3. The first CAM pulley failed at 40 hrs/3 years, replaced under warranty has failed again at 60 hrs/5 years. Other than that the outboard is great, starts like any Honda, is fuel efficient and quiet.!! I hope Honda understand that with a boat you cant get out and push !! Quiet and fuel efficient CAM pulley failure

Cam pulley failures – Still an ongoing issue with the pulleys , I have 2x 20 hp BF and they failed at approx after 25 hrs.which not only put and end to a week away , but now I am waiting for parts.. Also,After searching the Internet there is a company in Scotland that makes the pulley out of solid billet of aluminum.and sends them internationally as this is not a one… Read more

off instance ,Honda should be using these instead of substandard composite pulleys, the extra price of a solid aluminum pulley can be the difference of keeping a customer or getting new customers! Other than the pulley issue the outboards are excellent, service and repairs from local distributor outstanding. Bakelite cam pulleys -cheap and nasty

Pwr Tilt, Pwr Start, Power, Small Size + Weight, Worth the extra $$$ for Quality Performance – Exceptional. Starts perfectly in the coldest Minnesota weather, down to 20 degrees F, and runs strong and reliably. The power tilt and electric start are essential for a 65 year old with bad shoulders, and I am sure for younger guys too. I have found it perfect for small boat fishing and shallow water duck hunting on the backwaters of the… Read more ·  2

Mississippi River in Minnesota.

After all my research, I spent a bit more for the Honda, yet do not regret it for one second. 4 Strokes are expensive and I did not want any surprises. I have had it since 2004 and it has performed exceptionally over 100's of hours of use.

Mississippi River Mike Reliable starting, energy efficient, "lots" of power too! I can't think of a negative. You get what you pay for, and the Honda price = Value + Reliability!
