Honda BF60 getting water into the engine – I bought a Honda BF60 brand new because of Honda's reputation and have had it serviced at the same dealer 100km from my house since new. I had a blown fuse in the engine in its first 12 months of owning it and a split fuel line in the forth year which my mechanic said was a fault and it was replaced under warranty, these were the only times I have… Read more
been stranded which is not great but I still had faith that the trusty Honda wouldn't let me down. Prior to taking my boat for its service this year I checked the oil was ok (bit dirty) and just took off oil cap and noticed some white / brown paste inside oil cap. When I arrived at my service my boat mechanic pulled a pipe off the back of the engine and saw some white/brown paste in the tube and said this engine is stuffed and that Honda have had this problem on several engines where water or moisture is getting into the system and he would do whats required to fix the engine under warranty as he has with previous clients out of warranty. My boat is outside warranty and Honda don't want a bar of it. I would think that a Honda engine serviced for its whole life would have a design life longer than 9 years. Apart from the two issues above the engine has never missed a beat. I am looking to upgrade to a new boat and engine and after Honda have flat out refused to assist in the repair, I would not buy another Honda engine. I have mates that have Yamaha's & Suzuki's that are the same age and older and have not had any issues at all.
12 years of excellence – My BF50 is a 2008 model, It's been a brilliant engine on my 4.3m sea jay. In a tough bracket, its a class leader for its HP bracket. Quality, durability, reliability and Blast, it works. Show details

Starts first turn, awesome on fuel – I got my bf50 off eBay, fella sold it 50psi low on one cylinder without telling me, had it serviced by baymarine in Chelsea VIC and if you want brutal honesty and great work l recommend them, I have the worst luck in awful car mechanics but l was very lucky in my choice of boat mechanic, (which is 10x more important l believe). My Honda is 21… Read more
years old and yes it's in poor condition from top to bottom but here's the thing- it starts first kick even after 2 months with no use, uses nearly no fuel even at 5900rpm for long runs and is very quiet, my other outboards have been 70 and 115hp Johnson seahorses and I'm much happier with my old and beaten Honda fourstroke, it's not even a tough decision. I've been stuck in the bay because my old 2 stoke wouldn't start and was very lucky to get a tow back in, never happening again.
I'd love a newer Honda but I'm so happy with my current one it's hard to picture it being even better, plus l can't afford one :)
Honda Legendary Reliability – Our 2004 Honda BF 50, has been used in a fast response, commercial use operation powering a 4.5m RHIB for our sailing club for over 12 years, and has never once let us down. Would start when Mercury and Yamaha would not. Would clock 27 Knots pushing a 4.5m RHIB, and has clocked over 4000 hours, and has excellent fuel economy, 20L per 100km. Show reply
Honda BF45 – I had a Honda BF45 on my 4.1 m aluminium pontoon boat . It did 3500hrs before I sold it. What a magic motor. It pulled two biscuits with 2 x 70kg adults . Change your prop to a Solas the Honda props have no cup . I am having a new boat built now was going to put a Honda 100 on it but the service agent is limited in Dunedin N.Z so have gone for a 100 4 Stroke Merc. Show reply
BF 50 – I have a new BF50 that won't pull the skin of a custard. 2 kids on a biscuit and will not get them on the plane. Brother has a 30hp Yamaha pulling 2 adults. Changed prop no difference. Had it back to the dealer for checks, they say it's ok. This is my 5th outboard, properly my last Honda. No power,
