The perfect all rounder – I have owned my Honda XL650V Transalp for about 6 years now and would say this is this best all round motorcycle i have owned in my 48 years of motorcycling. Its travelled many thousands of kilometres (solo) off road through some of the most remote dirt tracks in Australia and has always got there and back with no problems. Yes I look at the BMW GS 1250 and Honda Africa Twin 1100 and would probably love one but the size, reliability and cost of the Transalp ticks a lot of boxes. I have fitted a Puig touring screen and hyperpro progressive springs front and rear, 12 volt power outlet and run a Heidenau K60 scout on the rear with a Continental TKC80 on the front. The bike is smooth, comfortable, reliable and very forgiving. its like the Labrador of motorcycles.

Good all rounder with a few niggling problems – I'd find it hard to think of a better all rounder - at any price. Mine's done 90,000 km with little going wrong. It has an unfortunate problem of losing power when under load (e.g. when hit by a wind gust or when riding on corrugated roads) which I haven't been able to get to the bottom of. Otherwise it does everything well - one or two up (hardly notice a pillion). Good handling, plenty of power, smooth and comfortable. Loses power under load and I can't figure out why (only an occasional problem)

Update - Fixed the loss of power problem - LHS choke cable not screwed into carby. All good now and 125 k on the clock.

Am I a kiwi? – Dear Aquala, I'm not sure what the reference to being a 'kiwi' means? Just because I took the transalp to a zuki dealer doesn't mean I've got some phobia about Honda dealers! However their products have a lot to be desired, I've had issues with several bikes, one car & one mower. They're all bad as far as I'm concerned!! I turned the key and the instruments would light up It is made by Honda with cheap parts

Good – I put a Staintune muffler and the Transalp revs so well now. Can't wait to go for my next trip in Feb 09. Took it to the desert when new and it handled the soft sand quite well once I got used to riding this 190+kg machine and it still had the oem tyres fitted. comfy and great for riding on long rides. Could do with more power but once off the road it's got plenty. Basic suspension.

Excellent – Feels as solid and reliable as its reputation. Smooth, and great for commuting or touring. I plan to keep this bike for many years. Handles really well in dirt or on road. Nice and high sitting position means it's great for seeing and being seen in traffic. I'll always want a little more power in any bike. Carbies have gotten clogged a few times.
