Husky warranty useless – After you buy this product, you find out that regardless of the fault, if you used it in your garage, or with an extension cord, the warranty is voided and you are liable for any repair or replacement, even after only a few weeks of owning it! Not very transparent.

Hi Linda, thank you for your review. It is recommended that all user manuals are read prior to setting up your appliance. On page 3 it states: LOCATION When selecting a position for your unit you should make sure the floor is flat and firm and the room is well ventilated. Avoid locating your unit near a heat source, e.g. cooker, boiler or radiator. Also avoid direct sunlight as this may increase the electrical consumption. Extreme cold ambient temperatures may also cause the unit not to perform properly. This unit is not designed for use in a garage or outdoor installation. Do not cover the unit. When installing the unit, ensure there is at least 10cm of free space at the sides and rear of the unit. This will allow air to circulate around the appliance and improve the efficiency of the cooling process. Ensure there is at least 70cm of free space at the top of the unit to allow for the lid to be opened.

Also, the use of an extension cord also contributes to incorrect installation. These can be faulty and cause appliances to be damage especially if the amperage rating of the extension cord is not suitable for the appliance you want to use it with.

Harvey Norman confirms that the majority of purchasers place their chest freezer in their garage. Harvey Norman was unaware of this requirement under the warranty and Arisit could not tell us why placing a freezer in a garage voids the warranty. Harvey Norman also agreed that people do not read the user manual until AFTER they have purchased their product. Who puts a 295L white chest freezer in their kitchen or house, especially given a lot of laundries these days are in the fully lined insulated garage which is no different to the rest of the house?

Given our issue was a faulty control panel from the start, the location had nothing to do with the issue and Arisit’s refusal to honour the warranty has resulted in us returning our Husky product and swapping for a different brand. Everyone who has become aware of this warranty requirement, including multiple electricians, has agreed they would purchase another brand that offers better customer service.

The Commerce Commission in NZ is looking into “fit for purpose” and consumer transparency currently. Husky products should be labelled accordingly and retailers required to point out this warranty issue.

Beware the Husky Warranty! – Within days of plugging this in a warning light came on. Two calls to Husky annd I was advised to just turn it off and back on after 15 minutes and “it should go away”. It didn’t, so then it required a service under warranty…. So we thought. Turns out because the chest freezer is in our garage, the warranty is void, even though the fault was unrelated to the location. Page 3 of the user manual they said (which you don’t read until after you buy it) says they don’t warranty their fridges and freezers in garages. What? Who puts the chest freezer in their kitchen, and what’s wrong with an insulated carpeted garage? Isn’t that where most people keep their big chest freezer?

So buyer beware, because the sales people don’t tell you when you buy your Husky fridge or freezer that the warranty is void if you put it in your garage. And after the service tech comes out, under warranty, you thought, you end up paying even though it is only a month or so old.

Great bang for your $ – Unpack, quick wipe out of the inside with a mild detergent, plug in and turn on – didn’t have to touch the controls, was already set to -18° which it reached in a handful of hours. The Freezer is well built, the plastics are of decent quality and the light is in the best place to get maximum coverage. Drainage for the inevitable defrost’s, is also well located and easy to access. The biggest standout however is its quietness, I have 2 German made fridge/freezer that cost many times more than this and as far as quiet operation goes, they don’t compare – overall a very well thought out device which combined with the $, makes or an unmatchable bang for your buck prospect.
