This is the best machine ever! – I was given this machine by my Grandmother, when my machine broke. Old as it is, it is by far the best and quietest machine I've ever used. My mother has a computerised smart machine, yet everytime she see me sewing, she has a longing look in her eyes! I never want to replace it!
Don't throw away your old machine – As we know, most new stuff is less durable and well made, to keep the price down Get your old sewing machine fixed, as opposed to buying new. It has many benefits. It's the devil you know. It doesn't cause the carbon pollution that making a new one does. It will totally outlast the short warranty new one. As the old one was made with more robust parts, it usually sews better too. Similar cost. Don't be told "it can't be fixed" or "it's not worth it". Find a real repairer. Go on line and check.
Excellent machine. Never missed a beat – I also have one of these machines. It has been just wonderful. It is now changing colour to a dirty yellow but has never missed a beat. It has been serviced 3 times in 30 years. However it is now time to buy another. I have no idea which one to buy. Any suggestions? I will keep this machine as a back up. It always worked, never missed a beat.
So Long My Faithful Machine – I've had one of these for 27 years too and only now is it starting to lose its reliability. When I thread it up, I have to fuss a little to get the top thread in right and it loops until I hold it for a while to tighten it. I can still wrangle it, but think it's time for a new baby. I'll be sad to see it go. The heavy duty, no nonsense machine has been such a reliable tool. It goes through anything! I just have to figure out what might be a good replacement, without all of the additions I won't use and don't want to pay for. Solid, reliable, good motor. Heavy and sturdy. A workhorse, not a show pony.
I bought a Janome DC6030. It seems pretty good so far, although I can't remember how to do the buttonholes and have to get out the manual (which is who knows where). I like the automatic thread-cutting feature A LOT. The handle feels flimsy, but I do cart it about and nothing's happened (I worry though). Very nice machine, but I'll get back to you in 10-15 years.
Best machine ever – Serviced once in 27 years, even the auto thread still works. This machine has never missed a beat sewing everything from denim to lace. Great to have reliable products. My oldest appliance and it still works perfectly.

Hi Robyne, would love to know what you decided on (or do decide on) for a replacement machine. I bought an old Janome 2nd hand from an ex-Janome service person about 4 years ago when I was 1st getting into sewing. I am now sewing all sorts of things and my weighty beloved 2nd handy is not quite coping anymore.
I'm in the market for a replacement that is good, solid, reliable and not full of a bunch of computerized stuff I don't need. Any recommendations would be so much appreciated as all the ones I've seen so far look like they'll blow over in the next gust of wind. Cheers, Xan
