Over all happy with the Jayco but some extra work needs to be done in certain areas as I have done with Journey – We bought this 2015 Jayco Flamingo outback New to replace our Hawk outback .It was used as a work site office and family holidays. for a family of 3 it was nice and comfortable experience .Towed great and hap enough storage space food and utensils ,clothes bag each still required though. Issues - the upgraded innerspring mattresses are heavy and… Read more
bowed the rear mattress slide out base to the point it contacted the body when pulling ,repaired by Jayco but was a be aware issue till we sold it .Dust - small trips on dirt roads was ok but trip to Weipa was bad even with foam behind all the vents .Slide in plastic sheets recommended . Never get up on roof closed as I did once - water leak after that. In the end I re-mastic the whole roof as it had gone hard and cracked .Overall enjoyed our time with the Flamingo and sold it last year 2023 and bought a new Jayco Journey pop top
Great escape vehicle and easy to tow – I bought a Jpod sport 2 years ago and have used it on about 15 occasions / 60 days and have not had any problems at all with it, in all types of weather . I didnt want to attached tent and have never used it as I like to set up in 5 minutes . Great value for the money and very happy with it . Warren Show details
Ok Camper! – Jayco Flamingo is OK. Easy to tow, especially with the independent suspension. The flamingo has a lighter tow ball weight due to the fridge being located more towards the rear of the van instead of a front location like whats found in a Jayco Swan. The flamingo layout definitely makes my wife happy with all the kitchen bench and cupboard space,… Read more
again a lot better than the Swan’s equivalent. The setup is relatively easy, especially with a wind out fiama awning. We have the outback model and would recommend getting over a standard model due to the extra ground clearance, etc. Beds are pretty good on their own, however with a little foam topper on them they are almost perfect! We have been caught in a few storms in the past & never had a problem with Flamingo. Would always recommend setting up with guide ropes though, even if the weather report is good, just for peace of mind. The build quality in a Jayco isn’t great, however for some reason beyond me their resale value is good currently. It’s also worth noting there are Jayco outlets all over the country, only good if you can get a booking though.
Good idea very poorly executed and finished, shame – Hired the tourer version for 4 days The inside back door release catch broke off the first time we were inside,in the middle of nowhere, locking us in !!Luckily I am fit and skinny enough to slide out the side window to unlock door..a scary situation. The release is 3/16 soft white metal,I replaced with stainless but it needs a better set up the… Read more
door itself poorly aligned and did not allow the lock to slide into place easily. To connect the gas bayonet is an absolute mission...what poor design, lay down on your back in whatever is around, dirt, mud etc just to try and fit bayonet, good luck,we would have taken our portable gas stove if we knew how difficult this simple task would be.Too hard to mount it on the side of the van ?Just dumb The lock access to front box difficult to use...very difficult. The box itself poorly sealed and lid misaligned. We looked at the huge tent bag and just shook our heads...too hard. The place we hired it from installed two marine half overs to replace original units and ensure rear door stayed shut. The sika flex sealant finishes were very poor in some seams, bubbles etc,and smeared all over the roof in places ? The mattress..we survived one night on it and replaced it with high density foam 5" thick... The other locks on it were ordinary and had to be adjusted to ensure they sealed ... Apart from that we wont be buying one and as I work in quality control suggest the company who makes this product look closely into this area as for the sake of a little care and maybe an extra hundred dollars on some decent locks etc it would be a great camper. Easy to tow, easy to maneuver , layout worked, maybe another 50mm or 100mm head room towards the front ,electrics very well done and thought through.
Extremely disappointing Jayco Flamingo – Again our door frame has cracked and become unattached. The door is now only held up by Velcro, this is the second time this has occurred. The plastic cannot withstand the ups and downs of the highway. We have also had the Perspex pop out twice, the plastic exterior door latch broke and I had to replace with metal. We have a draw that continually… Read more
falls out, another draw that is lose and the screws holding the microwave secure have let go. Flimsy plastics cannot stand up to everyday use and workmanship on cupboards is questionable....we are very disappointed as we have had 2 previous Jayco that were great....but we won't be buying again as we are sick of the issues every time we take it on a trip.
Progress from camper to pop top – I have tented and camper trailered and the pop top is the next step. Purchased 6 months ago flamingo outback 2011 model. Like new. Easy to trailer, easy to set up, comfortable and it does everything we want. My current model bt50 pulls it easily. No complaints.
Roof replacement on 2004 Flamingo – Insurance job after damage to roof from tree branch. Roof was replaced by insurer (CIL great to do business with) with a later model fibre glass type. After only a little over 12 months back on he road and three trips the roof looks like it has shrunk and kinked for around 600mm at the top of the end frame board on the curve on front and back. … Read more
Also notable dish in roof for full length.
Also the roof vent plastic surround has deformed quite a bit necessitating the mesh screen be screwed to the frame to secure in place.
Now we are on the trail of getting it replaced under warranty. Very poor quality for what we thought was a great replacement of the two piece alloy roof with the join down the middle.
After this being the 3rd Jayco camper over the last 30 years it will no doubt be the last!!
UPDATE ! ! New roof ordered from Jayco 7/8/15 and to this date 14/9/15 Jayco cannot tell repairer where the roof is on the assembly line!! One trip already cancelled due this.
Not very robust but basically a competent design once you iron out the bugs – Bought the Flamingo in 2008 and have used it many times for family camping and even lived in it for 2 years when I was working in the country. Weak points: Door can have trouble with alignment, faucet/handpump will start to leak after a couple years and always experiences water 'hammer' when hooked up to mains, awning is difficult to take out and… Read more
really difficult to put away, water connector on outside is way too fragile and was replaced once under warranty, fridge burned out its heater element (lasted 5 years), one of the cooking burners needs a new safety switch, the special switch which connects the body to the roof lighting was rubbish and the wires are too thin, they tend to get warm. Strong Points: I have not had any leaks, tears or major breakdowns of the materials; the awning has withstood major windstorms with no damage, I've not had any major repair that I could not handle except the water connector covered by warranty and the faucet which cost me a couple hundred, the battery was expensive but worth it as its still going strong after 6 years, it drives and brakes well, never a problem, everything else is working fine, the beds and seats and surfaces have held up well, the outside still looks really good, and its retained its value well. Should you buy it? If you are willing to handle the camper gently, and don't mind fixing small things yourself (paying someone to do it is too expensive), then yes I would buy it. My last comment is for the Jayco sales and service performance. They basically treat you as if they have plenty of customers (which they do) and have a 'take it leave it' attitude. Once I took possession I never brought it back to the dealer and went instead to an authorised service rep. in Adelaide who was reasonable.
Jayco Flamingo 2013 – We bought our 2013 Flamingo new from Caravanland Cannington & what an amazing camper it is. We are a young family that love the great out doors. This van is perfect for us in every way. Not too big for storing in the carport. Adequate internal storage space and an abundance of bench top space. Very comfie beds. We got the full annex with walls &… Read more
it's perfect for both shade & a place for the kids to play if it rains. Can't fault this camper it has everything you need for weekends or longer trips away. Ours isn't the Outback but we did get it under slung which meant we benefited from getting the outback chassis with greater ground clearance without spending the extra dollars. For the quick weekend getaways we do we couldn't justify the expense of a full outback. Cabinetry, furnishings & finishes are great quality. We love the natural light & fresh air this camper affords us. Not to mention the benefit of 360 external views allowing us to watch the kids play outside while we enjoy the comforts of the van. We would highly recommend this van to anyone considering a popup style camper.
2006 Jayco Flamingo Standard Camper Trailer – Purchased 2nd hand three years ago for my growing family of five. Largest Jayco campervan in their range. Came with bed end flys and extended size annexe. Very sturdy and easy to tow, with Manual or auto vehicle. Towed with Mk11 XT Falcon sedan hardly know its on behind you, know with Toyota Klueger same deal. Easy to setup with the help of… Read more
the kids and teaching them the responsibility of doing this. Beds are pretty good with inner spring queen and double, also single bed when table folded down.
We recently had a trip to Darwin and across from Mt Isa down the east coast of NSW, van was very good although head winds through the Centre of Australia reduced my fuel consumption down averaging about 21.5 ltrs per 100 kilometres to Coober Pedy - Alice Springs.
For families of five this Van represents good value for money under 20K second hand. Would recommend to others, sure screws come loose and things move on the van which needs attention, but when you travel and 11,500km to Darwin and back home from the East cost of Australia you are bound to have these things happen. Remember these vans are not built to be a rolls royce caravan with all the bells and accessories.
They are meant to be practical with standard refinements. Enjoy the time you have spending in them with the family as your kids grow up very quickly and get out there and see Australia. Happy campervaning. Reliable, inexpensive to run and service. Easy to tow and park. Lack of Storage space for growing families.
Excellent – We brought our Jayco Flamingo in Dec 2007 and got ready for our "big trip" from Melbourne to Cooktown. We left in February and were on the road for five months. We had its first service in Dubbo at a cost of $200 a bit of a rip off as we do not think that they did anything to it.When visitors came inside the Flamingo they were surprised at just… Read more
how roomy it is much bigger than a pop top caravan and so cool at night in the tropics. If anyone is thinking of getting a caravan look at a trailer first. The great thing about the Jayco Camper Trailer is that anyone can tow it and I mean anyone It does take a while to set it up about 45 minutes all up but once you do its great
Good – Very happy with our first van purchase. It tows beautifully, you hardly know it's there - we have a Pajero 4WD. It has made us get away with the family more than we would have otherwise. The boys love going to different caravan parks and it is so relaxing for us adults as well. We bought a Jayco Flamingo Outback in 2008, and it is a fantatic… Read more
"first van". We chose it because of the space for our family of 4. Our young boys love 'camping' in the Flamingo and don't mind sleeping in same bed. It is very airy and not too hard to put up and take down. Build quality only average and we found in wet weather that bedding still got a bit wet, even with the flys on. Lack of storage space for trips longer than 2-3 days duration. Didn't like bending down to access cupboards and leaning over sink and stove to use.
