new and not aged tyres. I have had tyres rotated and balanced about every 10,000 km (coincides with vehicle service interval) and had a wheel alignment mainly out of piece of mind. Last week (April 2023) I had a 10,000 km vehicle service and this is when I have been rotating and balancing my wheels. I now have 58,000 km of use and my mechanic wouldn't rotate them since he believes they are unroadworthy. I estimate I have less than 5,000 km of remaining tread before I need a new set of tyres (note, 64,000 km again for a Kumho set). However, the reason for unroadworthiness at 58,000 km is that the tyres are showing large cracks running between the treads (have photo taken by mechanic). My mechanic advised not to be doing any highway driving since the tyres might unexpectedly separate along cracks and rupture. Note that the vehicle gets housed in a garage when not in use and I am doing very average driving around Brisbane and very occasional short trips on north and south highways. The tyres have worn evenly across the tyres due to me regularly checking tyre pressure, rotating and balancing at vehicle service intervals and wheel alignment. Is my expectation of tyres too much? I consider the Kumho tyres I bought are a reasonable tyre in Kumho range and would expect at least 80,000 km of use, not 58,000 km (cracks) nor 64,000 km ("bald"). Why else would Kumho have an 80,000 km warranty/guarantee for such tyres if they did not last at least 80,000 km. So folks, I may be changing companies for my next set of tyres.
Terrible wear – Original Bridgestones on my Ford Ranger lasted 70000ks. Replaced with Kumho HT51 and noticed wear at 20000k and now at 30000k one tyre is fractured in the middle of the tread and leaking badly. No wonder these tyres are discontinued. I will not feel safe with these now. Show details
So far, So Very Good – I previously did more than 160,000 kms via 2 sets of MAXXIS HT760'S that I was very happy with in of terms of wet and dry grip, exceptional tread life and amazing improvement in economy over the OEM tyres that came with the car, improving 20%, which i never would have believed possible. HT51’s I got a full set several months ago and OMG the sound reduction is huge. Had driven over 190,000kms in total in my Ford Escape and never knew how quiet it could be. Grip, economy and noise all excellent so far. If long term tread wear and performance is as good as the dealer says then these Kumho HT51's are a big step up and got for slightly cheaper than quoted from multiple stores for replacement Maxxis. Only potential negative is that the grip profile grabs a lot of gravel, however, also grips much better on sandy tracks for what is still a highway tyre. 4 stars so far as I pretty much never give a 5 and longer term performance more important for this type of product.
Quiet tyres – I have put four of these tyres on a 2010 Chrysler Grand Voyager. We do city and country driving and the tyres have performed well at high speed and different weather conditions. They are quiet tyres which is difficult to find for this type of vehicle. It has only been one month so time will tell if they last longer than the Kumho KH27s that we previously had. Show details
