I've used this product for years and loved the results but now the formulation and texture of the lotion is different. Very thick and globular so almost impossible to apply from the container - especially if roots are being coloured first. Accordingly, the overall result is patchy and application is very frustrating. Back to the drawing board guys !! Show details

Disappointed with New Formula. I’ve been a loyal user of L’Oréal Excellence hair colour for many years and was always satisfied with the results. However, I’ve noticed a significant decline in quality recently. The product has become thick and gluggy, making it difficult to mix properly. After just one week, my hair turns yellow, grey coverage is… Read more

poor, and my hair feels dry and damaged. After speaking with a customer service representative from Loreal, I was informed that the formula has indeed changed — which explains the noticeable difference. Unfortunately, this new version does not meet the standard I’ve come to expect. I’m now trialling alternative products, as I can no longer continue using this one. Very disappointed.

Awful – Awful awful awful. As with all other reviewers the consistency is so thick and clumpy you can't squeeze it out of the bottle and the colour is very weird - thick greenish gunk. I snipped the end off the nozzle but it was still extremely hard to apply. I have reached out to L'oreal several times regarding this and all I get is that they are sorry… Read more

this has happened. I have asked them several times to provide the feedback to their products team, I have given them the link to all these reviews, and they won't answer my question except to say that they take concerns very seriously and that the feedback has been sent to the relevant department. Why change when it was such a great product. I am now faced with looking at other options and not sure what - any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Too Thick to Use – I have been colouring my hair for many, many years and today was the first time I have had to stop myself from doing so. The "new" Excellence Creme Triple Care Colour (8.1 Ash Blonde) with hyaluronic acid (what?) was too thick to squeeze out of the tube, so I cut the tube with scissors. Then it was too thick to mix properly with the developer. … Read more

I was afraid to use it on my hair because it was so lumpy. I will not be buying L'Oreal Excellence Creme Hair Colour again until the package carries a notice saying "Thinner Formula"

Awful results – I used the 'Ash Blond' to avoid the copper results of 'Golden blond'. I have followed the instructions meticulously and timed myself correctly. The result is that now I'm ginger with 90% of my grey hair still showing. It feels like I bought a really, really expensive mono dose shampoo and hair treatment... Show details

DARK BROWN NOT ASH BLONDE – I started with bleach blonde hair and was expecting results similar to what is shown on the package (ultra ash light blonde) and I'm left with DARK BROWN HAIR. I now not only have to spend hundreds of dollars lightening it again, I will also have to spend so long reversing the damage. I am FURIOUS. the shade I am left with is darker than the… Read more

darkest shade on the box (for black hair starter colour) and my roots are orange. Did this for my birthday and just completely ruined the day.

To say I am annoyed is a significant understatement – I have light brown dyed hair. Prior to using (and in accordance with instructions) I used a color remover on my hair to bring it back to the previously bleached colour underneath. My hair came out an absolute perfect colour to use a level 8 blonde (and would have been happy with a level 7). So, following this (again, allowing for correct time), I… Read more

used the L'Oreal 8.1 blonde. I noticed within 5 minutes while I was cleaning up that my hair was DARK. I previously have ignored this kind of thing to my regret, so I washed the colour out immediately. Dried my hair and it is a clear level 5 medium brown. I don't know if they have mixed up batches etc, but after 5 minutes, to come out this dark, something has gone very wrong at L'Oreal, not that they care or want to refund you for a faulty product. They will just 'pass it on their team'. Avoid this product or use at your own peril if you really don't want to go the wrong colour entirely. Now I am going to have to colour remove again. Thanks for that L'Oreal.

In pictures - the lighter colour is where I started... the darker colour is after the L'Oreal 'blonde', 5 mins of sitting on my hair.

I have a follow-up: L’Oreals response which basically says the colour performed correctly and ash tones means your hair will seem darker so too bad. Honestly, don’t touch with a barge pole.

Not as good as I hoped – So I’ll just start by saying most of my hair was very red and brassy, like a rust colour, and my regrowth was a light ashy brown. I was hoping to tone out a lot of the red and try and match it more to my natural colour, and if I’m lucky cover the greys coming through as well. My biggest worry was that the red would absorb the dye too much and just… Read more

become very dark/black. So on the plus side it has covered most of the red and is more just like a medium brown colour, darker than my natural but will fade a bit so we’ll see, it didn’t go super dark and even still has highlights in it, not just a flat, block colour. There is still some red there but I was expecting that. But the weird thing is for an ash shade it made my natural hair colour very golden, almost with a yellow tinge and it doesn’t look like it’s covered the greys very much but I have found any of the blonde and light brown shades in this brand don’t seem to cover greys. So what I started with was light brown ashy regrowth with greys and the rest was brassy and rust coloured, quite dark red in places. After using this my regrowth is like a dark golden blonde and the lengths are like a mid golden brown. It’s an improvement at least but just surprised how gold/yellow it turned my natural hair. I should also mention it does leave my hair in nice condition without being dry or brittle.

A very nasty product – Used L'oreal preference 8.1 for yrs ok. Last time used excellence had the serum so effect was 'light'. Now has ph shampoo as step 2 - nasty muddy colour and greasy. Show details

Incorrect advertising – The picture of a blonde on the front of the packaging & comparisons on the back of the box are inaccurate, it should be brown. My hair is blonde, I have used packaged off the shelf hair dyes many times over the years especially since being in lockdown & unable to see my hair stylist. Generally the pictures are a reasonable indicator of what to… Read more

expect with the final result. Not in this case. This colour turned my blonde hair brown! Extremely disappointing & waste of money & time.

I really didn’t expect this! – I have dyed light blonde hair with a lot of grey up front, to the back darker out grown roots that were showing so I thought I would make everything a greyer color by using L’Oréal 8.1 ash blonde but it made my hair an awful dark ashy medium/dark blonde! It doesn’t look natural, very dull. What can I do? Show details

Great home dye, good natural colour – The 8.1 Naural Ash Blonde is just that .... looks natural. I don't know if they've changed the composition but the last few times I used it, it doesn't last much longer than a couple of weeks on the 'new' grey hair growth, OK on the rest. Also the plastic gloves were for tiny hands and I couldn't use them. Wasn't the case in the past. Show details

Totally messed my hair up – Applied today after waiting for 48 hours after recommended test, it gave a even coverage I must say, but the colour is awful, dirty dark greenish brownish colour. My advice is to Avoid. I absolutely hate my hair right now I could cry

Buy a difderent brand – Really weak poor quality. My hair was light to medium brown hadn't been coloured for well over a year now and had 12 inches chopped off so what was left was pretty much my natural regrowth. I tried to do a blonde ombre but didnt want it to go too blonde so thought this colour would do nicely... WRONG... it turned my hair DARKER! Did I buy a faulty… Read more

pack? Possibly but when tried to contact L'Oréal they brushed me off saying it was because my hair was previously coloured. I have been box colouring my hair for years and never had this happen so I am very disappointed I wasted my money.

Perfect colour, soft feel – I have just had a full head of 9 and white blonde foils over a disasterous lightening experience that left me yellow. Problem was I already had ash blonde/light brown regrowth so the foils didn't cover them and it was toned but the unfoiled yellow came screaming back a week later. So I went for a L'Oreal Excellence 8.1 Ash blonde to go closer to… Read more

my roots and the ash to take away the brassiness (let's face it, it was yellow). I decided to go for 30 mins developing time once I'd finished applying to roots and lengths. Upon checking at the 20 min mark I decided it was dark enough and I washed it off. This is chemistry ladies, you can't just sit there and not check your hair, there's a lot of people complaining their result was too dark, you have to use some smarts and be your own hairdresser. Does your hairdresser check your colour and decide it's time? Yes. Anyway, It is brilliant. Still bright and blondy but not brassy or patchworky like it was. I can go out in public again!! Next time I am going for the 9.1 light ash blonde cos colours build up and go darker.
