Features/functionality/PC compatibility/lack of up to date playback software – I have recently purchased (5Aug21) and setup a Navig8R NavCam -818SHD Batch No 17692 from Harvey Norman Online with which I have a few issues regarding its features/functionality/PC compatibility and playback. Fortunately it was easy enough to setup and the post setup support I received from LaserCo has been good however these are my issues which I don't think can be solved in the short term until another more updated model is available.
Firstly regarding PC connectivity for example, contrary to the information on page 11 of the User Manual documentation you cannot playback any files on the device on a PC when plugged it into any USB port on any one of my 3 Windows PC computers which I have namely (1WIN10 desktop, WIN7 desktop and a WIN10 laptop) all with multiple USB ports it cannot be “seen” in Windows Explorer regardless of which USB ports I used unlike my previous PAPAGO! CrashCam which I also purchased from Harvey Norman over 10+ years ago now which worked perfectly until its power supply recently failed “killing” the device and blowing 2 fuses in my car in the process!
When I discovered the above PC issues I contacted support@laserco.com.au as I was then wondering if I may have a setting that was incorrect as I never had a problem with this which I used to do on my previous PAPAGO! CrashCam as the device screen is far too small to see anything played back in any detail. I was then advised that the device is only supported by Windows 7 which hasn’t been supported by Microsoft since early January 2020 and I am further disappointed that is not even supported by Windows10! Anyway by using a separate external USB micro card reader I have been able to view the .mov files on the device on either a WIN10 or WIN7 PC! however the issue I have now is that I have no GPS or speed data etc shown which I was able to view from my previous PAPAGO! Device without any additional software.
Also I have noticed on the (mini) CD which was included in the NAVIG8R box with the device that there is GPS Player software which I was going to install it on my WIN10 desktop PC however I didn’t as I was concerned about the “registry changes may be required during setup” advice warning which could cause conflicts with my existing registry setup and could well cause my WIN7 PC to crash which is the last thing I need to happen to my PC at the moment.
Additionally I have asked Laserco Support about the availability of any other Win7 or Win10 some other WIN10 compatible software for me to use that would connect to the NAVCAM device via a USB port on either my HP Desktop or HP laptop WIN10 or WIN7 PCs however there is apparently no such software available.
Regarding functionality it is not possible to take a photo/snapshot on this device in record mode which you could do on the PAPAGO! and which was very useful and easy to do when you need to take an urgent snapshot of an item of interest rather than having to look through potentially hours of mov files to find the appropriate mov file to take a snapshot.
Fyi I did think of getting the previous PAPAGO! repaired however given it’s age (over 10+ years!) I felt that it would be much better and far more effective to get a later model device however I believe that this newer model device has less features and functionality than my previously old PAPAGO! Device. Therefore in view of the above issues I am sorry to say I have only given it an OK rating and I would certainly not have purchased it knowing what I know now nor recommend it to any of my friends particularly since I have not been able to successfully playback any of the mov files with full GPS details etc on a full screen PC as I certainly cannot see the device screen in any detail even with my glasses on! Finally I would be very interested in hearing if anyone has found any solutions to any of my issues apart from buying another brand! Regards. Rod

Very good dashcam let down by battery failure – This unit has a very comprehensive feature set. It worked very well, the video was clean and good resolution - enough to identify number plates and driver expressions when they got stupid and copped a big blast of the horn. It was good enough for me to buy a second unit for my wife's car. Sadly I cannot recommend it - the internal battery has failed on one unit just out of warranty. It no longer holds a charge and causes the camera to glitch. Worst issue though is that it doesn't save the last video clip when you turn off the ignition. That is a major issue for the most critical moment when you truly need the camera footage. Laser's response to my email queries was a resounding SILENCE. LESSON 1 - At RRP $250 this isn't a cheap unit - unfortunately it's build quality doesn't match the price. If buying any Laser product, don't spend a lot - it's obvious they source their products out of factories in China that supply generic devices with your company name printed on them. LESSON 2 - from some web browsing - buy a dashcam with a Capacitor rather than a L-ion or LiPo battery as the batteries don't handle heat well - you know how hot your car gets sitting in the sun... nor can these types of batteries handle the many hundreds of charge-discharge cycles that you will subject them too when you turn your car on and off.
