LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet

No customer support- ours lasted just a few hours – Looked ok for the few hours it was working. Ours was never dropped and used probably twice before it stopped booting properly. I tried contacting Australian customer support but they didn't respond. Leapfrog connect is supposed to be able to fix boot problems but fails to complete the task. What a waste of money.
Just get a tablet – You spend a stupid amount of money for a leap pad to then have to pay stupid amounts of money for games, apps etc. it's really not worth it. Get a normal tablet and download kids stuff onto it. This was literally used a handful of times and pit at the bottom of the barrel. Waste of money.
Exceptional service – Our leap frog wasn't charging correctly. I contacted customer service and got a immediate response. Throughout working through the postage and repair and replacement of the unit we have been notified of what the team has been doing to resolve the issues. I would like to say thanks heaps for such a fantastic service
cracked screen – I downloaded a heap of games and used the stylus on the screen and it cracked. I had purchased 2, so there was one devastated little girl as she watched her brother use his. I have had no response from the supplier. It also makes me angry as I had download ed so many games
The battery life is terrible – I would not recommend this product, u are forever replacing batteries in it they are lucky to even last 30 mins, my daughter on plays it for a short time and then goes flat, should be a charging system not battery or both so that there is a choice, I was quiet disappointed as I like the learning games on it for my daughter who started kindy this year.
Disappointed – Bought the leap pad Minh for tended trips in car and such. Although the unit is robust it chews through batteries and being a tablet you would think it would be mobile not attached to a wall socket:( So purchased an accessory kit from BIGW which was advertised with batteries and there were none in pack! Can't take it back as the box got destroyed… Read more
in the excitement of opening it. Best offer was a $10 refund. At the end of the day you would think it would have rechargeable batteries.
Need help – Hi all I bought the leap pad explorer for my 2 yr old daughter for Christmas last year however she used it a handful of times and then we moved and had to put our stuff in storage. It has been in the for 4 months and I want and got it out today now she can't use it without it being plugged into the power point has anyone else had this problem
Not the best toy – I would not advise anyone to purchase this toy! 170$ for a tablet that comes with nothing, doesn't even have a re-chargeable battery. Games are expensive on top you have to pay to download a file to hold mp3 music. I have spent a lot of money on games and they seem to change once on the Leap pad2. Buy a galaxy tab or Ipad and games are 5$ or free.… Read more
Battery dies every 3 hours then wait 5 hours for batteries to re charge. Expensive price tag then expensive games, can't even put music on the leap pad without having to pay for that app too!
Good but the games are pricy – I got the LeapPad for my son because the games are all educational and you can't accidentally run up a huge phone bill from the little ones buying things without you knowing on this system like they can on your mobile or tablet. If I can offer any advise it would be to buy rechargeable batteries or buying an AC kit because this little unit… Read more
will drain the batteries very quick.
After buying the unit the games can be expensive at around $30-50 each. If you are anywhere else in the world besides Australia the games would be half the price! It's really annoying that there is such a big price mark up for Australians when we are effectively downloading the same games from the same american site online.
There is some very confusing American language in some of the games which I find confusing. Eg. Pet Pals 2 game, one of the questions is "which number is bigger" which to me is asking about size rather than the quantity. There are other examples but I would have to play a few games to remember them. Educational games Some very American language which has not been adapted for Australian kids.
Very unsafe! – I purchased a lead pad 2 for my sons birthday, within 5 minutes of us giving it to him, unwrapping ect to turn it on and its screen smashed!!! In front of our eyes!! Not only unsafe but certainly not safe for age groups shown as screen is glass and could seriously injure, not only did i get a shocking response from the manufacturing company, i… Read more
basically got ignored as i didn't buy it from there "selected stores" even though given proof of purchase and damage photos they still want me to pay a minimum of $100 to replace there faulty item!! Very unhappy and a waste of money!! Certainly taking this one further!!
From one very [censored word removed] off customer!
Expensive bad warranty rude company.
Great for young kids – I like the style and ease of handling for kids but it's annoying coz it goes thru heaps of batteries, unless u do what I did in the end and spent $25 on rechargeable batteries which are great. None of the apps are free like the iPad. Costing about $10 - $30 depending on what ones. However my little girls have leant so much with alphabet and counting and they love them so worth it still. Easy to use great learning apps Apps are not free
Leappad dissapointment – We brought a Leapfrog Leappad for my daughters 4th birthday. It has been nothing but painful....I sent it back as it wouldn't turn on....after much frustration they told me it was my fault and I must be turning it on wrong. So with new batteries in it seemed to work for about 10 mins then turned itself off saying the batteries were flat. They were… Read more
band new energiser ones so I was pretty mad. After 4 new sets I brought the plug in adapotor....what a load of rubbish. even with it plugged in it turns it's self off. a waste of money!!

I regret buying this product – The device itself seems to be okay. It seems fairly sturdy. The screen is very small and has poor definition. The sound seems okay. The device isn't like an iPad where you simply recharge it, instead you have to pump batteries into it. The major flaw with this product is the outrageously expensive games. One game was $25 to download… Read more
which I was about to do when I realised I was on the USA site, which is only for USA downloads. On the Aussie site the same game was $45, and that was when the AUS$ was over parity. The game was almost 100% more expensive to download if you were in Australia. Why would a company like this shoot themselves in the foot like that? Talk about slapping your customers in the face!!
The games are pretty poorly constructed, they seem to be cross promotional vehicles for Disney or other such companies.
If I would have known this before, I would have got a cheap Android tablet and downloaded games that were ten times better for $5 instead. Easy to use Games are prohibitively expensive, small screen, not rechargeable

How I saved a bunch of money – I gave away my daughters leap pad and got her a second hand iPod touch (4g)!!!! The games are FAR better and start at $1.29 (NZD) not $14 (NZD) ~ there are also plenty of good free games. The functionality is at least 50 fold so as she gets older she maintains interest and continues to discover new uses. The battery is rechargeable unlike her leap… Read more
pad which saves a ton of money and unnecessary waste.
P.S. You can set up a ipod touch so your child cannot access inappropriate material. There are are also a ton of educational games you can access via the App Store. Rugged design Over priced apps, low functionality, needs battery's
Battery pack for Leappad 2 – After reading some reviews on Leap pad 2 battery life which I agree is really terrible - a battery pack is now available in australia at toy world. At $50 it is expensive but worth it if you already have the leappad. I think for me I should have bought an ipad instead because when games are purchased for leappad it will end up costing just as much!!!
Cracked screen – My son pressed on the screen with the stylus and the screen cracked. Apparently not repairable and now can't be used as its dangerous. Only 3 months old. Not happy at all as this was purchased for when travelling. Now I have to purchase another one or waste the games etc. Uses same games as leapster explorer so is interchangeable Not sturdy for… Read more
age group. Screen breaks easily and games/apps are expensive. Sooner pay more for iPad. At least repairable and cheaper apps
Batteries are expensive – You can't get rechargable batteries in australia and you can't order from the leap pad web site to australia. it is a great unit and the kids love it but it chew through the batteries big w and target do not stock any accessories for the units ????? why not make more money because i want to buy some but can't Kids love learning on it Batteries last a hour
A battery Chewer – One of our children received the Leap pad ipad, and the other received the Leap Frog explorer GS for Christmas. We have spent $50 on batteries in a week, and they really have not been using them all that often. we had Duracell batteries, so we are extremely disappointed with this. We too think the prices of games are extroidinary. They got one… Read more
game each, and that will have to do. The kids enjoy it, but are frustrated when they keep hearing the low battery signal. Ridiculous how the batteries run out so fast. The instructions say not to use re- chargable ones.
if big w had a heart they would stock the rechargable battery unit that goes with the leap pad 2 but they don't
Don't Bother – Total waste of money. It chews up the batteries - we're lucky to get 2 days out of each batch! Apps are ridiculously priced. To set it up with music, games & learning tools I could easily pay over $300. Taking into account upgrading the apps as the kids age & it will work out very expensive. Wish I had of kept the box so I could return… Read more
it. Kid friendly build. Expensive to run (battery). Apps are very high in price - no budget friendly options.
nice packaging, very disappointing experience – Leapfrog continues their tradition of selling colourful, overpriced toys with expensive, poorly designed software. It's truly disappointing for consumers and somewhat incredible that companies like Disney, Pixar, SesameWorkshop and DiscoveryChannel would lend their valuable names to shoddy products like this. sadly, many kids see the familiar… Read more
images on the cover and demand their parents buy.
the software range for the LeapPad 2 is currently less than 100 titles, many of which were designed for the old Leapster Explorer handheld, with lower resolution graphics. all the LeapPad apps range from US$5 to US$10, with the best being comparable to most free kids app on the Apple store or GooglePlay store. While the LeapPad 2 offers higher resolution camera, you still cannot download real movies onto the device for your kids to watch, for that you will need a traditional tablet (eg Ainol Elf II) which will be expandable, easier to use and far better value long term for your kids. Its case is made of bright white plastic accented with kid-friendly green or pink and feels tough enough to withstand the abuse kids will put it through. The LeapPad's interface is also bright and colorful, with a virtual pet that greets kids when they sign on. Its apps consist mostly of children's eBooks, educational videos from providers such as the Discovery Channel and simple animated games. You can't connect the device directly to Internet, so you don't have to worry about your kids finding their way into one of the networks' darker corners. Instead, any interaction with the Internet, such as to download apps or to upload pictures, is done by connecting the device to a PC, a task that presumably will be done by a parent. Poor quality, overpriced apps, limited functionailty of camera and tablet generally, cannot watch real movies on this device--limited use for long trips in the car
I use rechargables, stuff the instructions, they work wonderfully.
I agree apps are expensive, they need to comete with IPAD big time
leappad – hi there i bought leappad for my almost four year old and a nintendo 3ds for my 7 year old last christmas. the quality of the leappad is far beyond my expextations. the games are varied the console easy to manage and follow . i have loved it. my 7 year old now wants her own. the batteries are a pain but i think they have solved this. i just got a… Read more

Cant wait to get one for my kid!! – I have the Original Explorer.. Yes they go through batteries rather quickly but least not to say your kids love it! Thats why they run out of battery so quickly.. orginal in this too.. I have seen big differences with the education levels in my kid since introducing one of these. I Will not cut back on my childs hunger to be smarter because of $40 for an educational game. Face it A Dvd / Movie is not far off the cost - and what do they learn?... Think about it.. Have a good Christmas! I know ours will be great! Brain Food

Kids love it – My 6 year old has a LeapPad 2 and loves it. It is almost exactly like the Leapster Explorer (which she also has), but in tablet form and with the availability of a video camera. I know there are a lot of bad reviews on here, but I didn't find the product to be too expensive, nor the games. With Nintendo 3DS the games can be $70 each. I generally… Read more
find the games are around the $30 mark, and think that is reasonable (equivalent to the NintendoDS).
I love the educational aspect of the games; it is good to know your child is playing something that is educational, rather than shooting at things. If your child wants a game console, and you don't want to give them the traditional video game console filled with inappropriate games, then this is absolutely the way to go!
Also, yes, they chew through batteries. But you can by the ac adapter ($20-$30) to charge the unit at the wall and use for extended play, which is far better than buying batteries every week. Reliable, educational, sturdy Inefficient battery use (fixable via AC adapter)
Disgusting Rip Off – This product appeared to be great on the packaging advertising excellent learning apps and games for my son. I bought the unit for £70 and realised it only had 2 apps on which were shoddy. After installing 4 games, i had spent £80 which is £10 more than the product cost. How i have managed not to swear from being ripped off severely is… Read more
unbelievable. So to make this unit anywhere near useful, you have to spend a packet. I gave mine away to a local charity due to it being a pathetic money making scheme. Little does the charity know, they wont be able to afford the apps or games rendering the unit useless. I should have sent it back to leapfrog with a bomb in it and billed them for the 4 pathetic games i downloaded for £80. If i could give this unit no stars, i would do. Leapfrog need to call ita day. Educational? NO!, Rip off? Hell yeah. Nice design Apps way to expensive for the middle working class. Shocking learning programs which have limited use. Should offer free products.
Yes, I agreed with you there, after the fact that I have spent nearly a $1000 dollars on apps to be… Read more
not worth buying – After opening leap pad ,i get to know i have to pay for downloadable apps and the apps are too expensive. so buying a leappad tablet is just wastage of money. it comes with 5 apps but not the descent ones. I also noticed that the apps are double priced in australia as compared to usa. Too expensive apps, slow processer, bad touch screen, eats battries
Not as good as expected – For the price paid for these items I would of preferred to add more money and of bought a iPad or a couple of iPods. The battery life is short, the games need to be purchased to have a variety for the kids, and they are ridiculously expensive. The games are slow and the touch screen is not very clear. limited and not as challenging as described. My 4 year old is playing them at the highest level (year 6) and passing them with ease. OK but expensive for what you get – Beware there is a new LEAPPAD 2 TABLET being release in August 2012 with apparently better camera/video and 4Gb memory. I got one for my 3 yr old in February - she likes playing it but does get bored with it at times. Camera/Video quality c#@$py. Have to pay $10-$45 for extra games. right support from Leapfrog to fix this but it took many emails back and forth over many weeks. Battery life is ridiculous. Should be like a mobile phone battery with longer battery life and ability to recharge with a cable. Would have liked more language apps like Japanese rather than just Spanish and French to learn. Have held off getting another one for my 21mth old. We just let them use this leappad tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet with wifi turned off (for the 3yr old) and 2 old iphones to play games/learning apps on. Its definitely not the be all and end all. If your child is 4yrs+ I would probably recommend you get them a cheap tablet (secondhand) and download free learning apps. There are heaps around now. Just make sure you turn off internet access so you don't get a surprise download bill on your next credit card statement! 21mth and 3yr old like the games. Pretty sturdy - its survived being thrown to the ground by my 21mth old. Terrible battery life and design, expensive product for what you get, extra online apps and cartridges are expensive and add up to be quite costly, language learning apps are only in Spanish and French, Camera & Video quality not good
yeah was going to buy one for my son but this sounds like a very expensive long term low return product
Totally Useless Product – The leappad is totally useless, I thought the apps were downloadable for free or atleast not so expensive. It is totally ridiculous to be paying $45 for a game, after paying over $150 for the unit, exchanging batteries every week ! and the worst part about it is that there is no repair centre in australia at all ! My daughter had hers for 2 wks. I… Read more
am so dissapointed as she broke it accidentely and no one is willing to help us out. The games are not even worth the money at all. They are not Terrible, but certianly would not pay more than $5 for each game. the so called free ones that come with the unit are terrible games.

Does not live up to the hype – My son got the leapPad for his Birthday, has been using for 4months. I did a lot of research on the internet to try and find out if this is a good product and could find only good reviews. However, on using, I am disappointed in several features. See cons. It is made for children, sturdy, safe, and my son likes playing with some of the games… Read more
(e.g. the alphabet drawing game included on purchase) Less expensive than e.g. Ipad, but all the apps are extremely expensive to buy - from about $10 to about $45 a shot. That all adds up if you decide to add to the few apps included. Second, battery life very poor - no electrical cable included. We keep changing 4 AA batteries. Third, very poor camera and video quality. Really really poor. Next, I set the pad for British English, but it still sounds American on a lot of the games, plus the repetitive sound track on many of the games reminds me of early days of video games - very annoying and innane for me. The LeapPad allows for practically no customization in terms of the hard drive ( the drive gets blocked once installed) although you can remove games and do some other parent adjustments. NOTE: It is advertised as a ebook reader, however it DOES NOT take any ebooks or music files - you can only buy "ebooks" from the web shop custom made for LeapPad. This was disappointing - would have liked to add some ebooks or music for my son.

not that many apps or game for it as was previously advertised. Tablet suitable for children. Cheaper then other tablets on the market. Apps and games are expensive.

ok for a toddler – We got our 2yr old son one of these and his uncles bought him a cheap computer tablet. He uses both of them. It is good as it is way cheaper than an ipad, but the apps on itunes or his tablet are either free or much cheaper than the leapfrog. He uses both devices equally. surprised in this day and age why it didn't have an adapter, and then the hefty price of apps. The upside is that he has scratched it already and it only cost me $100. When he is ready and older to get a more expensive computer tablet then that would be a better choice. Simple. cheaper than a computer tablet Price of apps. Why no charger?
Can you tell me what cheap computer tablet your little one uses? I got a 2.5 year old and loves angry bird. we would live for him to learn more.
Good fun, decent for the price – My 4th old got this as an Xmas present. He calls it his iPad! rechargeable so while he is using one set the other is charging. In the scheme of things it is a decent price for what you get but unless the price of additional games/apps come down it will end up with limited use. Sturdy, good for little hands, touch screen is quite responsive for a toy. Cost of additional games and apps, batteries don't last that long.
