ALDI Maginon Car Black Box

Keep looking, this one isnt the one! – We purchased two of these dashcams at the same time for our two cars. For some reason one sat in the box at home, while we used the other one in only one of our cars. They both came with a 4GB sd card and a 12V cord which is long. The date and time are impossible to set and require setting every single time you go to use the item, which is a real… Read more
hassle. The camera mount suction caps to the windscreen, the angle/position of the camera can be adjusted by pushing it and it clicks into position and by setting it into position using little dials that loosen and tighten the mounting joints to adjust it in place. We found the camera difficult to position in the right spot. We found the little dials fell off over a couple of uses and as much as we looked, we couldnt find them, so we were forced to wire the camera to the mount or it was unusuable. We found the camera case and mount do not like being locked in a hot car because they began warping out of shape. The camera recorded and appeared to be clear but we were unable to see what a cars number plate was unless we were a few centimetres off its bumper bar. It also re-records over the incidents. You would need to swap the sd card with a new one to save the incident footage. The camera only went from the windscreen to the glovebox a handful of times but looked like it had been through a war and needed burying. We got the new one out and began using it and found it had the same faults. Im now googling dashcams with the hope of finding one that works.
Absolute RUBBISH!!! – I know it's cheap - but NO battery life at all. You can't even change the date and time. We bought 2 ... we may as well have thrown $70 in the trash. I love Aldi for the bargains - but I will NEVER buy a Special Buy AGAIN. Very disappointing!!!!!
RUBBISH – This dash cam is rubbish. I have persevered with it for over 2 years. The battery decided to grow. I replaced it with a new one. The video quality is very poor. You can't read number plates. The camera will not hold the set date and time, and is not user friendly to reset. I am usually happy with Aldi products but they have stuffed up big time with this one.
Waste of money – Help centre where helpful in setting this impossible difficult item up as the process is a little frustrating but we got there and now its working and has been for 6 months.Failed at 18m months old. Dont waste your money
Faulty battery – I found the camera on the floor in my car with battery cover off it and battery ballooned to twice the size. The battery pushed off the back and the whole camera went with it. Lucky I wasn't in the car at the time. Not happy at all with the product.
Don't touch it with a barge pole – My two cameras were brand labelled ONIX. Both were purchased from Aldi. While I appreciate that at $39.99 each, one should not expect miracles. One should however expect the basic things, that they work and be fit for service. I found it impossible to get the settings to save functions particularly difficult. The "Date & Time" function was the… Read more
most difficult to set on the first camera. The battery seemed to run down very quickly. The camera did not move from one file segment-set for 5 minutes-to another and most times just shut down. I took it back after I had received little help from Tempo's supposed Customer Support Line. Paul , noted my complaints. He said he will call me back once he could reach a tech support person. I am still waiting for his return call. I have just taken my second unit to get a refund today (27/11/17) this camera worked a little better than the first one and its picture was not all that bad. But it also did not retain the” Date and Time” function in memory. It did not detect when the car moved off and did not start recording unless activated manually. It also failed to retain the set 5 minute recorded file size. Frequently; it would go to a shorter file size or stop recording altogether in mid trip. It also failed to stop recording and automatically shut down at the end of a trip and after the car was shut down. The final straw came when despite it being correctly plugged into my cigarette lighter point in my car; it would run the battery down and shut off. I suspected the power adapter was faulty. It was a 5v 500ml amp adapter. After testing I found the plug going into the unit was faulty. Again I rang the so called "Customer Service' staff. Well, Watson must have been having a bad day. This "Minister of First Impressions" could not have sounded any less interested in what I was telling him. “No we cannot replace the Power Adapter. We have none in stock. No we cannot swap the whole unit for another-we have non in stock”. He suggested I take it back to Aldi to get a refund. I was disappointed that I had to do this as I thought maybe with a functioning power adapter I could get it to work. The image and audio on it worked satisfactorily. The settings menu definitely needs refining if ONIX are going to persevere with this dash cam. Well, in the circumstances, I cut my losses and took it back to Aldi and got a refund. My suggestion to anyone seeking guidance whether to buy one of these or not, is save your money and buy something that is at least fit for purpose and works correctly without too many headaches.

Junk – Bought this a couple of weeks after it came out (last one). Used it for first time two days ago. After removing it from box I discovered no instruction manual of any form and had to fumble my way through everything. It does have infrared lighting but these are useless past a few feet and I found too much reflection on the lens from the lights… Read more
on the windscreen made viewing too difficult with this feature on. No matter what I did I could not get it to function with a memory card. Didn't matter what size or if card brand new or used, the message memory full would always appear. Battery doesn't last very long so power cord would have to be connected permanently. Screen ended up getting snowy with thick white horizontal lines through it after a few minutes trying to get it to work. Will not recommend this.
does the job BUT – the previous black box I had created a very detailed video, sadly this does not. It is impossible to read a number plate unless over 2 meters away, though the picture is okay and would be very helpfull in a accident if you need to have a record of something a few cars away like the number plates forget it.
Useless in less than 2 months – I thought I'd get one to test the water. Well, I purchased it on August 30, and by October 22, it is cooked. The mounting bracket failed from heat, and the casing is so badly buckled in the heat that the door for the connectors will not close. Even the SD card is difficult to remove because of the heat damage. It is absolutely useless, and even… Read more
getting a replacement will simply cost me even more to ship it back, and the replacement will be just as useless, and this would have to be done every 2 months.
The casing is so badly affected by the heat that it looks like it has been made of icing. I mean, if something is supposed to be used attached to the windscreen, surely it has to be able to cope with sun exposure. It was suggested that I should only use it when there is no direct sunlight on it!
It is so badly built that even if it was in the glovebox of the car it would end up in the same condition.
If it failed after the warranty period, then I'd say, fair enough, it was cheap, so not to expect too much, but a dash cam that costs $25 per month is absurd.
Lesson learned as far as ALDI is concerned. After all, they decided it was a good business idea to be associated with this junk.
Not very good – Although it works, the picture quality is very poor. You can't make out the license plate numbers of cars in front of you. The output file size of the video files is very large. No compression. Also the audio capture is not very good either. I would not recommend it.
Aldi crash cam Maginon branded – This is a good value camera for the price, and Aldi always take the item back if it proves to be unsatisfactory, so it is a good buy,for the price. The mounting is easy and everything works as it should do and the picture when played back on the computer is reasonably good.
Cheap and nasty – Cheap Dash cam, it does work and it does do what it says. It's cheap construction and the operating system doesn't really match the button layout Day time video quality is good and audio is good. The mount is good and versatile but bulky. It runs a nokia Li-ion battery that has a good life and could easily be replaced. I'd get this on special if possible. It's worth about 30 dollars
