Hello, the axle on our 245l compost bin has rusted out completely. the only parts left were those in each end of the drum. Other than that it has been a great composter. Can I order a new axle through this Q&A forum? Thanks, Ian.

Hi I recently got the 245L compost bin and I noticed that its leaking a lot of liquid, there was no rain since the time i have started using it. Its been only couple of weeks. My worry is that it will leak all the nutrients and is it normal for it to leak. I have not added any water to the bin

Hi, I have had my 245 litre Maze Compost tumbler for just over 2 Years now and I'm very happy with it, the only problem is that the axel has completely rusted through, I have taken the old axel out. Is it possible to get a stainless steel axel so it lasts longer. Kind Regards Allan W. Carrara Qld 4211.

Hi Allan, no problem at all. Please fill in a spare parts for and we will send this out to you: external link

Hi there, I have a 245L maze compost tumbler which is very hard to turn. I have emptied it and found the centre axle very rusted. Would that be making it so hard to turn? How can I get a new axle? What would that cost me? I have had the tumber since November 2021. Thank you!

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi Sabine, that is probably the reason and we can send you a free axel as these days there are made from stainless steel. Can you see if you can take it apart and then email me some photos and you address details. Please email rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au. Thanks, Ronen

I have a question regarding the Maze composting cart - the pin L is so small and pops off - I don’t know how this could be what holds the axle and wheels together. Am I missing something? Also wondering in step 20 of the assembly of the composting bin - does it matter where the handle is positioned in for the crank rachet install as I’m having trouble getting it in the position that is shown in the directions. Almost finished assembling but want to make sure it’s right. Thanks!

Hi Grace. I don't think I'm going to be much help, but here goes. My composter doesn't have wheels so I can't help at all with that. The winding handle is best placed in a position that doesn't block your removing the 'lid' on the barrel when the barrel is in an easy position to fill. I got this slightly wrong but I just wind the handle a bit further and it's okay. It would have been a bit better if I'd got it in the position they suggest. One day I'll change it. As you obviously have a different type this may be no use at all. Cheers.

Maze   DM

Hi Mal, we can help you with this. Have you sent us photos of the tumbler? In theory you just need to remove the barrel from the stand and insert the new stainless steal axel. I suggest to communicate with Aaron from our office and he can assist. You might need more parts like fasteners. Best if you can send some photos to agionis@mazeproducts.com.au and he will be able to help you early next week.

Hi Chris, thanks for your enquiry. I'm sure i can help you solve this but to try and see what could be the problem i will need some photos. Are you able to send some photos of the gear showing some clos ups and also a couple of wide shots of the tumbler. please email them to rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au. thank you, Ronen

Hi I purchased my tumbler 3 years ago so disappointed that the centre axel has completely rusted away! Surely it’s made of steel designed to last when in contact with organic material? Thanks for any advice.

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi Jess, sorry to hear about this. Yes the steal should have lasted longer but having said that we have since improved in the new models do have a better stainless steal so we can send you a new one. You can email me your details to rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au or fill in a spare parts form and we will send it out. external link

Hi I've had one of these tumblers for the last couple years, 2 i think maybe a bit longer. Does the rusted shaft at each end cause the whole thing to not spin around, there's only about 5-10 degrees of movement l and I have emptied it out.

Steve J.
Steve J.

Never had any probs with central shaft….Have you checked there’s nothing trapped in the large gear wheel that the handle is connected to or that you have the brake down… the drum only rotates clockwise if you look at the handle end.

I have not had any problems either Drop maze an email…….they may be able to solve your issue

Hi Zane, i want to try to see what the problem is and help you fix it. Are you able to send me some photos of the axel inside and a side view of the gear side. Please email me at rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au. Thanks, Ronen

Does anyone know if the output liquid produced from the composting process can be frozen and then thawed for later use

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi Greg, the liquid from composting can be acidic as it is not liquid from compost but from the process of making compost. It is usually ok for mature trees and the like but not ideal for seedlings and young plants.

Greg D.
Greg D.

Thanks for the response Ronen. I firstly must clarify my original question. We don't have a large outdoor composter. Ours is a small indoor unit thats purpose is to produce the concentrated output liquid. A teaspoon of this liquid is mixed with 5 litres of water for placing on the garden. We are actually producing more output liquid than we need, so that is the reason for my original question. Are we able to freeze what we produce for later use.

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi Greg, I understand you are referring to the Indoor Composter using Bokashi right. We recommend to use the liquid when produced and not store it. If you are producing too much you can pour it down the drain and it could help to clear your drains as it can be acidic. Freezing could work in theory but as we haven't tested it i can not say for sure.

Hi my tumbler is less than 3 months old but when it rains the contents get wet and liquid seeps at the bottom? Is this what should happen

Steve
Steve

Hi Michelle, I have had the same Tumbler for nearly a year and had exactly the same issues. I'm selling it asap as the only solution is to to keep it covered with a tarp. Also because of the constant soakings the the contents end up in lumps when its rotated and the extra weight of the moisture places extra weight on the already flimsy winding mechanism.. It is a waste of money and not fit for purpose.. Steve

Michelle
Michelle

Oh dear not good news I’ll have to cover it which isn’t really what I expected from an expensive product

Andrew M.
Andrew M.

Hi Michelle and Steve, Yes, not good news. My Tumblers are under trees, that may help them. We had flooding rains here over the past year or so but I did not see the same problem here. Still, maybe I am just not as observant. I leave those 16 small vents open at times to let the mixture dry out. Good luck.

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi, sorry to hear you are having issues with this. water running through the compost helps to increase the activity with the microbes and can speed up aeration. The process of composting itself actually can create water and produces moist soil to add to the ground. I would suggest to add more dry material like sugarcane mulch or paper, cardboard or dry leaves. Covering the top with a small tarp can work as well but the compost will still stay wet so adding carbon is the best solution.

However if you are that unhappy with the tumbler and it will not work for you then we are happy to authorise a refund. Feel free to email me some details and photos at rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au Regards, Ronen

Hi I recently bought the smaller tumbler. My previous tumbler (another brand) fell off its undercarriage. In transferring the compost across I have now dislodged the middle petition and the gear no longer catches. Any ideas where to go from here?

Same thing happened to me. The middle petition did not change but the gear no longer catches with the weight. Bad design.

Can I store the composted in enclosed garage?

James J.
James J.

I wouldn't as the bins leaks a lot from the compost. Every time you rotate the bin the liquid from the composting material pours out. You will end up with an awful mess in your garage.

I have had my compost bin for a year now and when I try and turn the handle the top gears and handle separate so that the bin cannot turn. It is not too full (one is half full and the other side empty. How can I fix this?

I have just finished assembling my maze barrel composter and I believe I have assembled it correctly. I have watched the video instructions as well and pretty sure I did it correctly. However, my composter rotates freely in a clockwise direction even when the lock is in place. So basically it rotates in both directions when unlocked. So the lock only works for rotating in an anti-clockwise direction, which seams to defeat the purpose of having a lock. Is there something wrong?

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi Rossie, The lock is in place to stop rotation for safety and to enable you to stop in filling and emptying position. Are you able to take a couple of photos of the composter and the side with the handle and ratchet. Please email the photos to rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au. Thanks Ronen

When constructing my new 245l tumbler the bolts for the bottom of the stand seem to be too long and there is a 1cm gap between the upright and horizontal parts. Is there a part missing? I measured the bolts on the instruction manual and they matched the picture and used the nylock nuts as instructed

Maze
Maze   DM

Hi, did you try looking at the assembly video as this might clear it up. Otherwise can you email me photos of what you are referring to and i will help you solve this. My email is rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au. Thanks Ronen

The cogs on my tumbler catch once I start turning. I can force it to continue with some effort. It will then go alright, but with more force needed, and not particularly smoothly. I am fairly sure it was put together correctly. Other than this, I am happy with the tumbler. Any advice would be helpful. Philip.

Jan Ash
Jan Ash

I'm not sure what you mean about the cogs catching - it should run smoothly one way (there's a brake to stop it going backwards). When full, it can be heavy and require a bit of weight, but not forcing. I'd send a message (and you might have to send a video to show what you mean) to the manufacturer. They were very helpful when I had an issue.

Maze
Maze   DM

Thanks Jan for the assistance, Hi Philip please feel free to send an some photos or video to rmazor@mazeproducts.com.au and we will try to figure out what is going wrong. Ronen

Philip M

It feels like the cogs are not meshing exactly, and it stops.I have to turn really hard to start it again, and then it will usually keep going if I keep the speed up. Also, I find it will go backwards the same as forward. Do the screws that hold the gear pieces attached to the drum need to be loose, allowing them to move a bit ,and possibly mesh better? Thanks for any help you can give. It is too hard for my wife to do by a long way. Philip M.

libby

I find that sometimes. I think it could be sticks or the opening slide catching
