Melbourne Fencing Experts replaced another section of our fence yesterday. Jim and his team were very professional and completed the job in a timely manner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved. Theo, thank you for co-coordinating the job and for your constant contact. We were never left in the dark. It has been pleasure dealing with Melbourne Fencing Experts and will highly recommend the company to my family and friends.

Avoid this company – extremely poor workmanship, no accountability I engaged Melbourne Fencing Experts (previously trading as Melbourne Fencing & Maintenance) to install a Colourbond fence at my property in 2021. The original quote specified double H4 treated pine 200x50mm sleepers at the base for added strength, rigidity and to hold the dirt in place—this was meant to reinforce the structure due to the sloped block.

Now, only four years later, the fence has completely failed—it has come apart, is leaning, and no longer offers privacy or support. Despite the additional support I paid for, the structure was clearly not built to withstand the conditions it was meant to, and the workmanship has proven extremely poor.

When I contacted the company to have the issue reassessed and asked for a requote for repairs, they completely ignored my second email. Worse still, no other fencing company wants to touch the job because of how badly it was originally done.

They are now trading under a new name (Melbourne Fencing Experts) but it’s the same business, with the same owner and ABN. Don’t be fooled by the rebranding—it’s a name change, not a change in ethics or professionalism.

They also refuse to accept any responsibility and instead make excuses, claiming that soil pressure is to blame, despite them specifically quoting and building the fence with sleepers to hold the soil back. It’s a complete cop-out and goes against what was promised.

I’ve spent thousands trying to fix the damage caused by their shortcuts and am left with a dangerous, unstable fence. Do not use this company. They will do a poor job, make excuses, ignore your attempts to resolve issues, and disappear when their work fails. Beware.

Follow-up  · What was the cleanup process like after installation? The site was left reasonably tidy after the installation. I have no significant complaints about the cleanup process. Did the company provide a written warranty? The only warranty information provided was what was included on the original quote and invoice. While I could have attempted to pursue the matter through VCAT when the fence failed, that process is time-consuming and stressful. Unfortunately, many consumers are discouraged because of this, which is often what companies rely on when problems arise years later. How was the fence installation timeline? The installation was completed within a reasonable timeframe. The issue was never how quickly the fence was installed, but rather the quality of the workmanship and the shortcuts that appear to have been taken. After the fence failed, it became clear that critical structural elements were missing. The fence does not have support posts between each panel, which significantly reduces its strength and ability to withstand pressure over time. A second major issue is the way the sleepers were installed. The quote specified double H4 treated pine sleepers at the base to provide strength and retain the soil. Instead of using full sleepers and excavating the ground as required, the sleepers appear to have been cut down and installed as a shortcut. Had full sleepers been used as specified, there would have been substantially more strength and support at the base of the fence. If you simply need a basic fence installed on flat ground with no unusual site conditions, they may be able to complete the job just like many other fencing companies. However, my experience suggests that when additional structural requirements are needed, corners have been cut to save time and money while still charging for the work that was originally quoted. In my case, I paid for specific features that were intended to provide additional strength and soil retention, yet the finished product did not appear to reflect what was promised. Given the condition of the fence only four years later, I believe the shortcuts taken during construction contributed significantly to its failure. I appreciate that the company has received positive reviews from other customers since then, and I hope those customers have had a better experience than I did. My concern is that a fence can appear satisfactory when first installed, but the true test of workmanship is how it performs over time.

Excellent Quality and Great Service – WOW. Finally a service company that returns calls promptly, provides a great quality service, turns up on time as scheduled and gets the job done quickly and professionally and they were even cheaper than their competitors! Can't recommend these guys highly enough. Great customer service from their office as well as the guys onsite. We're very happy with our fence and appreciate the work of George and the guys to overcome some of the obstacles they encountered on the day. Very courteous and hard working guys. I wish great success for you guys, but you seem to have all bases covered for future success. Well done and Thank you. Regards, David.
