Pretty good but not perfect – After over 25 years of active service my MTD Model 645 chipper/shredder died. I'll write a review on this later. I bought the Raptor 700 from Edisons and it arrived in a box - unassembled. It came with instructions on how to download the manual. Luckily for me neither the downloading nor the assembling was a problem but that would not be true… Read more · 1
for everyone. It took over an hour to get the thing ready to go. I couldn't believe it started on the first pull which I thought was a good omen for things to come. Wrong. Once the engine was warm and stopped to empty the bag, it was very difficult to start again. I tried every throttle position. It eventually started but it really drained my energy. So-much-so that I left the engine running on slow when emptying the bag. Not ideal (or safe). I have to say that it chipped even large branches very well and effortlessly. All the small stuff thrown in the hopper was voraciously devoured. Almost scary. However, when examining the chipped/mulched product it contained a lot of small branch material not chopped finely enough in my opinion. I had to dig it out and put it through again. Not good. This was never a problem with my previous chipper/shredder (read review). Overall I think the Raptor 700 is worth the money. You could spend a lot more for little better performance. Further, it doesn't take up much room in the shed - and excuse to get more stuff lol.
Use with caution – Received unit and assembly was straight forward although one nut was the wrong size and had had to use a smaller bolt as the two corresponding holes in frame did not quite line up, I was given a $50.00 credit for my trouble. The side chute works very well, but feeding the larger hopper can be dangerous specially if shredding branches above 5mm in… Read more
size and are a bit older. There is a warning on the instructions about using dried twigs/branches but found that it can take a bit of effort to engage the blades at which point the blades are so quick that it can grab you hand with the branch if you don't let go really quickly, I found that it helps to run the unit just above idle speed to minimise risk. I will use the side feeder as much as possible in future. The rubber "stopper/curtain" at the top of the chute is next to useless as a lot of "chips" fly back out and it's advisable to keep well clear as much as possible and certainly wear all the safety gear, have used another unit in the past but cannot recall having these problems previously.
Good value chipper with excellent quality engine – The Michigan Raptor 700 is a powerful little chipper for the price, it does what it is designed to do. They say upto 70mm in the top hopper but I found comfortably upto 50mm branches into the Hopper and up to 70 mm trimmed branches into the chipper chute. It was delivered in a cardboard box I would have preferred it in a wooden crate but you get… Read more · 1
what you pay for, freight was in a timely manner. It was easy to put together. I feel it's well priced for the power I actually purchased the raptor 700 because it had a Kohler engine where as the others had clone engines, Kohler engines have a great reputation and last the distance. It chips well trimmed branches very well. The big wheels make for easy maneuvering. It is self feeding mulching hopper and chipper Chute. If you cut the bigger branches into smaller lengths the chipper pulls them through no problems. The Kohler engine is easy to start And is fuel efficient. It is quite then other clone engines I've had in the past on other chippers, The Hopper opening to the blades is rather small, and takes a bit of work to get bushy material fed into the blades. You need to make sure the larger branches are trimmed to get through the chute. Time will tell if the chipper will stand up under constant work. But I'm happy with this unit - With a bit of effort the Chipper does the job. Good Value for money. I looked around elsewhere and couldn't find anything within this price range with a brand name engine so I'm genuinely happy with my purchase.
