Has a lot of potential, but very underdone.
This tablet, running a full version of Windows 10 is capable of anything a normal PC is of which makes it an excellent device for work use, way more useful than an iOS/Android tablet. It also has great build quality and a very nice display. The keyboard and pen are designed for the device and work flawlessly when connected.
Unfortunately it is let down by both the OS and the hardware. The Windows store does not really have many great apps in comparison to that of iOS/Android and the desktop Windows apps feel very clunky on a small touch scree...Read more
n, this is an issue with all Windows tablets however not just this one. The keyboard should have been included as it is absolutely a necessity for this kind of device. The CPU is way too underpowered for a full Windows 10 device as well. For business users I would suggest a Surface Pro instead with its larger display and better CPU and if you are purchasing a tablet for consumer content consumption would highly recommend an iPad or Android tablet instead. However, for a Windows tablet the Surface Go does remain good value for the money at the price it is.Purchased in July 2019.

Faulty since beginning. Then keyboard not working after a year. Last only a year!!
Was forced to purchase Surface Pro 1824 (through school) for my year 4 girl. Was adamant as microsoft is expensive/overpriced. Since beginning, she complained about the "M" letter that was hard to push. But, to replace that through school, you had to pay $100, so, we didn't do any thing. Then just over a year later (which was 2 days ago), the keyboard that can be detach/attach to the screen stopped functioning. We did try from force shutdown, wipe the connectors with rubbed alcohol so far but still not working. I agree with the mom who wrote bad quality / faulty. Damn Microsoft!!
Purchased in March 2019 for $1,128.00.

Bad quality, faulty product with no refund policy, force to accept refurbish unit but not working unit, not worth
I bought surface pro5 bundle in 2018 for my daughter to start her year 7. It is pretty expensive for a student to use for homework but I would thought the money I spend would last me at least 3years without any problems. No I am wrong, it was a faulty product, it glitches and quit itself all the time. So I went back to the shop few times and they said only if I buy the same or upgrade version of surface. So we got the Surface Laptop 2 by paying couple hundreds extra. I would thought, nothing should go wrong now, I pay so much for a basic user w...Read more
ho don't play games or download anything, just for school work. After couple weeks, we noticed the touch pad is not working, letter k is not working. So again, back and forward to the shop and get no solution, no refund, no exchange but force to send for repair! Do I pay $1700 for a repair item? No way! So I decided to contact Microsofft myself, take me more than a year, but there is no way for them to refund or exchange the new unit. Again, I have to force to accept the refurbish unit. I am exhausted to fight and just accept what they offered. Belief it or not, they sent us a not working unit for a replacement! This is ridiculous! So I send back again as requested and I request for the refund this time, they said they will refund me this time. Again, back and forward email for weeks, then they change their mind by offering me a surface laptop 3! I say no, I do not feel confident with their laptop again so I refuse their offer. Now they said, they will not refund to us and ask me to use my insurance to claim!!! My daughter now has no laptop, I have no extra money to buy her any. I have all videos showing the problems but the file couldn't upload on this page for some reason!Similar opinion? Write a review on ProductReview.com.au!

Perfect for me but may not be for others
I needed a device that ran Windows 10 and was small, light and that I could watch TV shows on when I commuted on the train. I also wanted a USB port and the ability to add storage with a microSD card. The Surface Go ticked all these boxes.
But, the main thing that I think most people would dislike about the Surface Go is the user interface. It’s a Windows PC in an iPad’s body and that just doesn’t work well. iPads are very user friendly, especially for the less tech-savvy. They have an operating system and apps that are optimised for a 10-12” t...Read more

Good for a tablet, but over-priced
Lets get one thing out of the way to start with - this is a tablet, nothing more, nothing less. If you believe that you can replace your desktop computer with a Microsoft Surface, you are wrong. If you believe that you can replace your laptop with a Microsoft Surface, you might possibly be right, but you are probably wrong.
Computers and even laptops can be used for computing - office / excel / word / emails / powerpoint etc. Tablets are good for 'apps' - I liken them to a large mobile phone. They can be used for websites - Facebook / Instagra...Read more
m / Twitter / Netflix etc. Computers are tools, tablets are toys. Now that I've made that distinction, I can start the review. The competitors for the Microsoft Surface Go are the other popular tablets (Samsung / Lenovo / Asus etc), and the features / resolution / RAM / processor / size / battery life / weight are all comparable between all the brands. What is out of the ordinary is the cost of the Surface Go - almost double the average, and $100 more than the most powerful of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets on the market. That's before you get the add-ons, a touch pen will cost you, a keyboard will cost you (a lot). As a stand-alone device, it is quite competent - powerful / reliable / light / great quality - just like all of its competitors. I don't know how Microsoft can justify the cost, nor do I know what sort of consumer would purchase it - $1000ish for a device to scroll through Facebook, watch Netflix in bed, time wasting staring at a screen? It boggles the mind. If you want a tool to do a job, get a computer. If you want a toy to play with, get a tablet. The Surface Go does a good job as a tablet, just don't try to pretend that it is a computer.Purchased in May 2019 at Harvey Norman for $698.00.

Handy but not reliable
I purchased the Microsoft Surface Go to assist with assessments on the go. Whilst it is definitely more user friendly than a basic tablet it is not without its glitches. The accessories are not cheap and I found I resort to using the PC for assessments (not so convenient) and leave the Microsoft Surface Go to watch Netflix when I am out of town and can access wi-fi.
It is light and you can google quickly on it but I would not ever see it as a replacement to a PC or Laptop.

So far so good
I am a medical student and using this for note-taking capability on the go. It is a nice size for on the go and is capable to do basic email, one-note, office, etc. The app installation is however limited in S mode as I can't install EndNote.

Great iPad alternative
I recently picked up the Surface Go as I wanted something more versatile (iPads are great, but they are somewhat limited, especially if you're looking to replace your computer). I expected to be disappointed with the Surface Go's performance considering it only has 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC storage (eMMC is basically a glorified SD card). Well let's just say I was pleasantly surprised to discover how good the performance is for a low power budget PC. I used to own the Surface Pro 6 and while performance isn't as quick as that model, it isn't too...Read more
far off provided you keep it in S Mode. If you're picking this guy up and are planning on using it as a PC, the $150 type cover is a must. There is thee more expensive Alcantara one ($199), but the cheaper keyboard is absolutely fine. The addition of a USB C port is also very welcome, as you can charge the device using a portable battery pack when you're on the move. Battery life isn't the best. I find myself needing to recharge at least once throughout the day (granted, it does get used all day). A real surprise packet
I only just purchased this last week, and it turned out to be quite powerful. I added an extra keyboard case, and 256GB MicroSD card. I was holding out for the 8GB/128GB model but this came up on special, so I decided to buy to replace my iPad. This has the advantage of being easier, and has a more flexible interface than the iPad, especially after disabling S mode.

Just shoddy quality and terrible service
The touch screen has never worked from new. I can't use the bottom 1 cm of the screen, which is where all the login/logout stuff is. I then tried to contact microsoft support. There is only one place in all of Australia (Sydney) which is 1200km away. The solution offered is to log a service request on line. The online service only offers UPS as a courier, there in only one UPS pickup in Brisbane and it is an hours drive from me. I decide to organize and pay for my own courier. Next I wait for 20 minutes on hold for the service web...Read more
site to accept the request. As I write this I am still on hold. I have tried reloading the website several times, read the news on google, answered emails. It is not my surface or the internet. The microsoft website has failed..... My strong recommendation is avoid the product. The service is terrible, and I consider a website that stops accepting requests from customers is a disaster for a company that has computer stuff as it's business.Similar opinion? This tablet is great for my genealogy studies. Light, compact, fast and responsive.
I have the keyboard and surface pen which makes things easier to navigate around the screen.

Great Little Machine
Bought this as a supplemental machine, primarily for note taking
Was more than a little alarmed to find I couldn't install software, only from the windows store, but then after a little searching, found that you could 'unlock' it to make it a proper fully fledged windows machine and install regular programs, browsers etc.
The touch screen is responsive and beautiful to write on and the keyboard, considering its size, is surprisingly good to type on, after you adapt to the smaller size. the kickstand is an awesome feature as you don't need to ...Read more
buy another cover, although the keyboard is an extra purchase, which makes it a bit more expensive, and pretty essential to get the most out of the machine. While it isn't a powerhouse machine and there is noticeable lag when trying to do too many things at once, it does just fine for and on the go machine. Very pleased with it. The size makes it easy to transport and the battery is reasonably good - although nothing close to their 'benchmark' claims. As a primary computer, would be a frustrating experience, but as a travel machine, is absolutely perfect. Is great to that it is compatible with all the accessories of its big brothers.Purchased in June 2019 at JB Hi-Fi for $629.10.

A good mini word processor but a hopeless tablet
I have had my device for six months after years of happily using Ipads. When my old pad was ready to be replaced, I thought I would try a Surface Go as an alternative. My experience using it as a word processor is very good and it performs completely properly.
However, as a tablet it fails miserably - when trying to get it to work the device often freezes when doing a command. The camera is only very fair quality and the battery life is dreadful - it only seems to have a couple of hours before the battery dies, and the retailer says it can't b...Read more
e connected to a secondary battery when travelling. Whilst the device does seem very sturdy and the video quality is excellent, it doesn't seem to pair happily with the keyboard and it frequently flicks me over to other pages of its own will. Perfect Combination for Laptop/Tablet
I bought this so I could work during my travels and have since been very happy about the product. Not only you can use it as a tablet but also the fitting the detachable keyboard makes it perfect as a laptop. I normally use this for my Excel based spreadsheet works and word documents but also use a lot of general internet browsing. Never lags and works smooth. And facial recognition feature keeps my login info safe as well.

Great bit of tech
Ideal portable device, take it anywhere. No bigger/heavier than my old Samsung 10" tablet but way more versatile with Windows 10 Home. It's a PC during the day, movie / tv shows / browsing / email etc at night. Very well engineered, durable. Battery life does let it down (not good at all), so need to run it in Battery Saver mode most of the time unless doing serious work and a Powerbank is just about compulsory if out & about. Screen is small so everything of course is compact but touchscreen zooming helps. Great keyboard & quality touchpad. Ke...Read more

Hello Andrew, what an amazing review, took your time explaining pros and cons very clear. Was wondering what you would recommend for a student high school soon, I'd like to get my granddaughter a laptop, and don't know where to start. thanks so much, j

Hi Ja, I would like to share my experience with you regarding getting a laptop for a high school student. When my daughter was in year 7 in 2018, school required to get either Acer or Microsoft Surface. I'm a single parent with a low income but I have got my daughter a good quality laptop (I thought) which is Microsoft Surface. It is very pricey, I thought it could last us at lease 3 years? So I bought the Surface pro5 bundle. Not long, problems occurred, glitching, connection etc. we go back and forward to/from the store as they refuse to do anything for us. Anyway, we have got it exchanged at the end. We were thinking to get better one this time, so we pay couple more hundreds get the Microsoft Laptop2 which costs us $1700! Belief it or not, one month later, we discovered the Letter K and the mouse pad, left-right click is not working! Again, back and forward to the store, they refuse any exchange! They said, it needs to sent for repair! I wonder why am I paying $1700 for a repair item? If I cause the problems, fair enough! But obviously, it's a faulty product! No matter what I do or said, there is no way for me to get a refund nor exchanged. So I then contacted the manufacture and hoping they could treat me fairly, again, I have to accept their refurbish unit because that is only way I can do apparently! I wasn't happy from the start, but what can I do? So I accept it. I received the device follow by their email said, they assure me that the device is working perfect. One week after, my daughter came to me, show me the recording that she took on the device, it is not working probably, it glitch so badly, can't connect, lost her work while she is doing it... how frustrating! Then I have to sent it back to them again! You won't belief, this has been a year now but problem has not been resolved! They took the device from us, first they agree for a refund, then they said, no approval given! I am now have to go through legal advise etc. Please think twice if you really thinking of going with them though... I bought Dell and Lenovo for myself, I have been using them for years with no problems, great customer service from their manufacture, better guarantee/warranted we get. Good luck with your choice.
hello kylie, thanks so much for telling me your experience with computers, I definitely won't be buying the Microsoft S. anymore, thank you.
shame that these people are happy to take your money and then turn their back on you, it's similar to what happened with me and Apple, I took them to NCAT and it dragged on for a long time, but I was able to prove, they sold me a refurbished computer as a new one for nearly $4000. Very disappointing that dept stores don't take responsibility either. Well I'll do more research and please let me know what you think is best for a student what model etc. take care j
Hi Ja, I'll try to help.
It really depends on how much money you want to spend versus the performance that you will get from the machine. If I was spending your money, I would choose the HP 15.6-inch i5-1035G1/8GB/256GB SSD Laptop. It has an i5 processor for good speed without murdering the battery, 8 GB of RAM which will do all that you need for general use, and a 256 GB Hard Drive. Importantly, it is an SSD Hard Drive which will give you much better speed. All for a bit over $1000 from Harvey Norman
There are bigger and better machines available, but they cost more. There are also cheaper machines which will just be slow and clunky.
This laptop is a good balance between cost and performance.

How can I download Foxtel Now app or other apps that I would normally download through Google Play? Had no idea it would be so difficult to download apps. Nothing is mentioned in reviews. Wish I'd just bought another Samsung as I think it was much more user friendly
2 answers
Try downloading Memu Player Android emulator. Google search.
You can't download apps from Google Play, everything has to be done through the (equivalent) Microsoft Store. While the Foxtel app does exist, it's only compatible with Xbox and not the Surface tablet - https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/foxtel-play/9vwgnh0vc008
