MTD 20/42 Lawn Tractor

Stay away – I bought the YT42 MTD (branded as a Massey Ferguson) ride on about 3 years ago. It has seriously been nothing but trouble. It has now done 100 hours. It has had 3 sets of deck belts, 3 sets of drive belts and cooked 3 batteries. as they have no idea what causes it. . Just back from the repairer again today after the last drive belt lasting less than 5 minutes. The retailer says they know there is a fault in the deck construction that slices belts so they did a modification to fix it (maybe). I would have tested it but very oddly it has 3 flat tyres so all new valves and stems and off to mow.. nope the ignition has failed completely this time. So for its 100 hours it has now cost more in repairs than the initial purchase cost and no more it can go directly to the tip this time I refuse to spend another cent on the piece of rubbish.. Interestingly the dealer where I bought it new when I requested a trade in price on a new one said they couldn't offer me anything because they aren't a reliable mower.. These have been discontinued now but I would stay away from any MTD made product it's just not worth the hassle.

Great machine, crap public relations – Deliberately chose the Honda motor, wider cut and diff lock. Machine works excellently, can cut lawn and paddock equally well. Did own a MTD 42" twin blade deck, which was Ok except for being way too flimsy. PR of Greenfields manufacturer and retailer was terrible. tear 2cm long when purchased because the seat "fabric" over foam is microns thick. Other than these two non fatal flaws that affect all their models the single plate design, bullet proof steel frame and overall quality would see me really recommend this machine. Surely the Greenfiels people read these forums. So impressed with this mower I bought their Piecemaker Kohler powered shredder, magnificent.
