The best woodheater we have ever had – We have had our Nectre Mk 2 for over 12 months now. 2 winter seasons. It is still brilliant. Burns all night, holds the heat, zero emissions in the house, easy to load up, we can cook on top. We have a very large house and we can feel the effect in every room. It's so good our friends are buying one too! Show details ·  1

Brilliant! – We upgraded our 30 Beefeater woodheater. We delayed so long because there were so many poor reviews of every brand that we couldn't make up our minds. Our local installer highly recommend Nectre. There were still some mixed reviews but we decided to take the plunge, mostly because they are Australian made and he recommended them so highly. It… Read more

was the best decision ever! It heats our very large house thoroughly without the need for a fan. It lights so easily and by using the damping mechanism correctly we have NO smoke escaping into the house! Best of all by using good big logs we get 7-9 hours overnight which, despite all of the claims, is realistically all you are going to get out of any heater. Solidly made and looks good.

Would prefer to have my old coonara back, not happy with Nectre mk2 – We replaced our old coonara wood heater with a Nectre mk2 and it has been a disappointing result. The fire box depth is inadequate with wood prone to rolling out the front when loading. It has difficulty drawing and lighting, which leads to excessive smoke pouring out the front when loading with more wood. Even when it’s alight and the fire… Read more

established for a few hours this still happens. No amount of opening the fire up will remove smoke billowing into the room. We have always had a fire (coonara, heat charm, bosky) and have never experienced this before. I long for my old coonara back. It’s an expensive mistake and so difficult to know how a heater will perform once you get it home.

It's junk – I honestly thought nectre were a Chinese eBay fire place that would cost a few hundred after using one for a while. Maybe they are and we are just told they are Australian. There's is nothing quality about this piece of junk. I've used two Norseman previously and they worked great and had no issues. This thing though? Nothing seals correctly.… Read more

You'll be lucky to get wood to burn for 4 hours as it just does not slow combust. The seals on the door are tiny and inadequate and even ash will get blown out with heavy winds.

This thing doesn't do its job and could even be a liability with how crap the door seals. Stay away from them.

4 hours burn max – I have had my mark 2 fire now for 8 years, I agree with everyone that it burns nice and warm. I had to replace the baffle plate every year because in would bend until I got a thicker one custom made. I don't know how people get a all night burn, I will load it up, shut it down and its out after 4 hours, meening I have to get up at least twice… Read more

The best heater for your money – We bought our first Mega back in 2014. We moved in 2020 into an old house. It was cold and the fire was useless. So as soon as we got a few dollars we bought a new Mega. Now we are nice and warm.  Show details ·  1

So far so good – Brand new mk2 installed. Burns well and heats our open plan With exposed ceiling well. One question I have though, the heater whistles when there is a breeze/wind. Is there some way I can eliminate this? It stops when I open the door. Show details

Good reliable heater – Installed Nectre MK2 heater in 1997 on Sth Coast NSW about $2750 back then.Have replaced baffel plate twice(needs an 8mm plate),steel brick retainer 4 times, bricks once, baffel support lugs once. Ist flue once . Door rope seal twice.Steel expansion noise is a natural law of physics, Fan not noisy.Last 5 years wont burn over night , sucking too… Read more

much air as seals have worn. Overall great heater , however need to improve the top air closure so as to burn overnight.Have always used dried blackbutt, spotted gum, redgum, only used softwood kindling to start fire.Sadly lost the heater and house in the East Coast Bushfires on 31/12/2019, so now rebuilding and will seriously consider another Nectre MK2, but checking specs. of other brands.

Performs well! – We chose this heater after reading good reviews and because we wanted to support ‘made in Australia’. After a couple of teething problems we now can say we are mostly pleased with our purchase. The heater heats our huge area quite well, and will burn well overnight. The only thing we weren’t happy with is the fan speeds. Speeds 1 & 2 are sadly… Read more

so low you can hardly hear them with minimal change between them, then the 3rd speed ‘takes off’. Overall though, we would buy again :)

Great heater with great efficiency – We have a open plan living (living, dinning kitchen - 85sqm) at our place and this heater does the job easily (with fan on - goes into the whole house including 3 bedrooms also). I bought my MK2 just before 2018 winter, before that I had never operated a wood fire heater and since then never turned any of our oil heater again. Followed the… Read more ·  1

instructions manual and use well seasoned hardwood for overnight burn (the biggest log possible the better)- at the start of the overnight burn I have the top vent fully open for about 15-20mins before closing it completely (pushing all the way in) - it will burn from 10:30pm - 7am (Open all the vent at 7am - just put a couple of kindling to get it fully fired up again). This year will be our 3 winter, haven’t had to change any parts so far (the firs check and clean of flue about 3weeks ago - no creosote at all). Really happy with the heater. After knowing more about wood fire heater now, I would have like better heat control from the vents. Kav.

Nectre MK2 – Have a Nectre MK2 About 15 yrs old Every 3 years I replace the fire brick retainer baffle plate and occasionally a cracked firebrick. Heats our big house really well – When we bought our house we removed a wall to open the house up. This made the main living area reasonably large so we needed a good quality wood heater to keep us warm. I’ve lived in a few homes with smaller nectre wood heaters and they have been more than sufficient so to buy the biggest Nectre wood heater was a no brainer for me plus I’m a… Read more

South Australian and the Nectre heater’s are made here in Adelaide. This large Nectre wood heater with a fan does the job to well were most of the time it’s shut all the way down to keep us warm. This trick to getting them to run all night is to buy some magnets and cover some of the holes for the top air slide up to about 80% of them max, don’t cover them all because you will suffocate the fire and it’ll go out, experiment what works best. What ever you do don’t get them welded up.

Very good unit – Bought our Nectre Mk 11 25 years ago as our only source of heating. Have replaced the baffle plate twice and the brick retainer once. It still has the original door seal! A slight mod to the air intake and I get up to 12 hrs burn time. Very, very happy with this unit. Show details

Same here - but with a Nectre Mark 1 – I bought a house in the Adelaide Hills with a Nectre Mark 1 in early 2019, so I'm heading into my second winter with this heater. I have no idea how old it is but I'd say its been in the house many years. Previous tenants complained that it didn't heat properly so the previous owner put in a gas heater - which was a strange decision and… Read more ·  3

completely inadequate with this open plan design house with cathedral ceilings.

So as soon as I moved in, I decided to work from first principles and got a proper wood heater maintenance and repair man in to at least clean the flue. Yep - as well as needing cleaning, the flue was split and needed a section replacing. He also replaced some heat bricks and re-adjusted the door. Since having the repairs done and the flue cleaned the heater has gone like a bomb - it heats the while house really well and in fact it gets too hot. Even the dogs move away from it after a while.

But as others have said, you need to use good quality, dry, well seasoned wood (I use nothing but red gum) and learn to use the heater properly. Yearly maintenance also helps - a lot. So I haven't used the gas heater at all since early last winter and its been relegated to the store room. While my model doesn't have a fan, I would also avoid any wood heater with a fan - there are better solutions to heat circulation as a number of people have noted.

So I'm really happy with this heater. But as with any wood heater, the maintenance of the heater and flue, your use of it and the quality of your wood makes a huge difference. As the saying goes, if you think you'll get good heating out of poor quality wood or a poorly maintained or installed heater, 'you're dreaming'.

Can't keep the fire going all night.. Can't shut down and stop airflow – - Airslide at bottom off the door is only held on by 2 screws from the back and is super loose. - Airslide doesn't allow you to stop airflow. I know the new emissions laws have forced manufacturers to change the design of their heaters so that they can't be completely shut down.. Has anyone made any modifications to reverse what they have changed.. It's frustrating having to re light the fire every morning.... Show details

Good Aussie Built Quality! – We purchased A Nectre MKII with the fan option from BBQ's Galore Forster in 2018. We bought it for our newly built house in Elizabeth Beach that has a large, 5m x16m (80sqm) open kitchen, dining, living area with floor to ceiling windows and glass doors on 3x sides. and workmanship. It was easy to install. Its features allows a fire to be easily lit, and it breathes and draws real well and the heat is soooo amazing. The efficiency specs etc stacked up, the sales team were incredibly helpful and answered all of my probing questions. They knew fire places, not just warehousing and selling them. Just wanted to put it out there that if you want a quality Aussie Made product that will be efficient for the space you want heated then check out Nectre Combustion Heaters. They are not the cheapest but would easily have to be the best I have seen on the market and I have confidence that it will last a long time. These things are often built or shipped to order so plan a little ahead and don't sell out to cheaper OS made units off the floor at retail outlets. Thanks Nectre and keep true to your product - quality is paramount and something to be proud of! Dan Morgan - Elizabeth Beach

Not the best unit by far – We bought this fire in 2006. We noticed immediately that it has the MOST annoying loud clicking sound when it is running. This is some kind of expansion issue and can be 'felt' through the metal. It happens on heating, on cooling, and whenever something changes like a log moving. It can only be temporarily stopped by levering hard between the top… Read more

plate and the slot above the door with a bar. This fire is very dangerous because sparks come out of the air holes at the bottom of the door when the vent is open on starting. Even though air is going in the holes, spark particles have enough energy to come out of the holes in large numbers and fizz about the room. We made mesh filters out of metal fly screen tapped around a wood die. These just pushed into the holes and have been 100% effective and needed no attention apart from vacuuming dust occasionally, in 13 years. The angle steel that holds in the fire bricks lasts about a year on average. Last time we replaced it with a home-made one cut and bent from bed frame angle. The top baffle plate bent and eroded in two after about 3 years. We made a 2 part replacement that fitted much more snugly around the seating pins so doesn't direct gas around the sides, and it is 8mm steel and is unchanged after 9 years. The charcoal grey paint was not of the most durable, and the suppliers (Barbeques Direct) were spotted touching up scratched paint on new units with standard black spray paint (on the legs). This was due to their pallet truck tines being larger than the leg spacing. I had to fight for an undamaged unit. Today we lit the fire as we have always done and later found the glass cracked in one corner. No idea why- no log had fallen and it was not anywhere near full heat. This will write off the fire unfortunately, as a new glass is not worth the money. I have found an old Kent at the dump, and will spray it with VHT paint. Suzie.

Pretty happy with this heater – We bought a Nectre Mk2 nearly seven years ago and it has done a fabulous job of heating our old, very draughty weatherboard farm house. It runs 24/7 through the winter. The baffle has warped but not to the point of needing replacement yet. All other components are still in great condition. We've had no rusting or glass breaking issues that… Read more

About to buy our 3rd Nectre heater! Just love them – We are about to buy our 3rd Nectre. In more than 35 yrs of wood fires Nectre has out performed the competitors (and we have had a few as we have moved around!). We installed a Nectre MkII in our last house. We were a little concerned that it wouldn’t heat the space which was huge however it was fantastic. You do however need to use good, well… Read more

seasoned hardwood (but that applies to any wood Fire). I love the controls although I did find the door handle too hot at times.

It does go all night but only if you stack it and burn it correctly. It’s not like older style fires that roared away all night however because newer fires meet emission standards and that’s the price you pay for a cleaner burn.

FYI I would never buy a heater with an inbuilt fan - aside from the power required to run them, in my experience they always fail and are costly to repair replace. Instead we install ceiling fans (reversible) and I just love our small heat powered fan that sits on top of the firebox and costs absolutely nothing extra.

Looking forward to our next Nectre!

Heats efficiently but let down by poor quality and durability – I bought a Nectre MkII in Jan 2002 based on my experience with a Nectre Baker's Oven and a review of one by an architect. The heater began to rust within the first few years. Great patches of metal drop off on the inside. The door, hinges, and flue collar have all progressively rusted.

The initial fan inside the unit was subject of a product recall. I only found out about this by chance (Google search). I was not advised by Nectre.

I would not buy this brand again.
