Bought this air fryer on special at Big-W but from the moment we unpacked it we were very concerned about its horrible strong plastic odour. I washed the basket and grid with soapy water several times but the smell remained. Looking at the product webpage there is a FAQ for getting rid of the plastic smell which meant turning it to maximum temperature (200C) for the maximum time (60min) and letting it run. I did this next to the rangehood so we didn't fill the house with stinky hot plastic gases, but after letting the air fryer cool down from the first run the smell had not disappeared.

I did air fry some frozen fish fillets in it, and when on all I could smell was the fish, but my concern was where the plastic odours were coming from and could the chemicals be leeching into the food during cooking. Over the next few days I performed the procedure 3 more times, yet the product still smelt bad.

I had a good sniff of the basket after another wash and the smell seemed to be quite strong from the plastic fascia at the front of the basket, which vents into the cooking area to be heated and circulated.

I phoned up the support line and described the problem, how I had run their procedure multiple times but the smell was still present, even noticeable in a room the air fryer was just sitting in. They agreed that we should return it for a full refund and provided me with a Case Number by email to give to Big-W customer service, who took the printed email for their records, and refunded us in full.

This was the first stand-alone air fryer we've ever bought, it was very disturbing that the product emitted such an awful plastic chemical smell. Bought a different product from a brand we have another appliance from, and it works well without any dreadful smells.

Grateful to both Versuni (Philips support) and Big-W for their readiness to refund.
