Air Fryers Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of air fryer would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
One of the best appliances you can have in your kitchen
I had the old ones. But needed a bigger one. I do love these things. I make a bbq chicken in it every week. Takes 60 mins. I cut it up and make wraps for boys school lunches. The kids can also just put things in it when they get hungry. Party pies, spring rolls, fish etc... get it it’s worth it. I couldn’t live without this. One of best things Phillips has ever made. I can’t fault it.
Favourite Kitchen Appliance
I wish I got on to this earlier - what a huge time save and another means of cooking healthy meals. We've cooked all sorts of delicious meals in ours (stuffed capsicums, fish cakes, roast chicken, pork, vegetables, bread, scotch fillet, seafood - list goes on), yet to make chips! Results are always consistent and perfectly cooked, locked full of flavour and juicy. Cleaning is easy - removable parts straight into the dishwasher. Only part a little hard to clean is the top element. I cant rave enough about this air fryer. Will be purchasing accessories to try baking recipes
Forget the cheaper brands.
I originally purchased a Phillips XL Air fryer and loved it but found it a little small. When Aldi launched their Ambiano brand airfryers, I bought two and both failed at their first use. I had one refunded and one replaced. The Aldi replaced one is temperamental and overheats and cuts out on a regular basis. I then purchased a Smith and Noble 10 litre and within weeks the catch holding the basket in failed, making it very dangerous. I then purchased the Phillips XXL and I cant understand why I bothered with trying such inferior products to the XXL, just because they were cheaper. The drawer mechanism on the Phillips is far superior to other brands, the heating is much more even and cooking is much quicker. The new model XXL has the bottom of the basket as a removeable mesh grid which makes cleaning very easy. I purchased the extra grill plate for the bottom and I am very glad I did. Its a brilliant machine, with no nonsense hassles, and very good quality. You truly do get what you pay for.
Indispensable kitchen workhorse!
I first purchased the smaller sized Philips XL Airfryer, but found it too small for meals for 2 adults, and the occasional additional person. However the concept was so brilliant that after one month I sold the XL and purchased the larger XXL size. The Airfryer does all “brown” cooking, i.e. baking, dry-frying, grilling. It sits on my bench-top and we use it at least once every day. It bakes fish for two people in 10 minutes to perfection. No oil needed, the fish cooks in its natural oil - seared on the outside and moist on the inside. Same for steak. Even whole roasts a small whole chicken with veggies. Just set the timer and leave the Airfryer to do its magic. We’ve been using it every day for 15 months, sometimes multiple times per day – great for students to quickly cook packaged snacks like oven bake fish, pies, sausage rolls – in 10 minutes rather than 20-30 minutes in conventional oven. There is no preheating. Just put the food in and set the temperature and time - although most foods cook on the maximum 200 degrees setting. Uses much less power than a conventional oven. For best potato chips, soak the potatoes in water first to wash off surface starch before airfrying in a tsp of oil, salt, rosemary. I recommend watching the videos that are on Youtube.
The only negative I’ve found is that the design of the Airfryer makes it difficult to clean fat-splatter from the roof of the Airfryer behind the element where I can’t get a steel pad through all the way. (The drawer parts can go in the dishwasher). Stale fat smells when re-heated – so it really is necessary to clean the fat from behind the element, even semi-frequently. I haven’t checked out other brands but if the element is at the top in other airfryers, then the cleaning problem will be the same as for the Philips Airfryer. If a better design hits the market that is easier to clean I will swap over. Apart from the fat collection being difficult to clean, the Philips XXL Airfryer is the most useful appliance in our kitchen next to the water kettle. It’s a workhorse and is indispensable!
I bought my Airfryer when Philips were offering $50 Mother's Day cashback promo. I later bought another one for a wedding gift.
NB: I also purchased the Aldi Airfryer because it looked easier to clean than my Philips Airfryer, but returned it for refund after a week because it was too noisy and also the cooking drawer didn’t slide smoothly and frequently was fiddly to close properly. It doesn’t have sliding tracks like the Philips Airfryer does. The Aldi Airfryer is much cheaper and is inferior in quality to the Philips Airfryer.

I’m now an air fryer convert
Our new home in rural WA had a really basic oven, so I got an air fryer after seeing my Mum using her small one for simple meals like fish and chips, when I visited her. It has far exceeded my expectations as I use it for more and more meals. For example, I cooked a fairly complicated fish pie dish in the baking dish insert for guests and everyone found it delicious - the fish cooked perfectly in the tomato based sauce and the filo pastry on top browned to perfection. Just the other day I put some leftover soup in the same cooking dish to reheat and added some mashed potato and Kumera, sprinkled a little grated cheese and 12 mins later, there was the most deliciously browned mash I’ve ever seen. My husband and I think the roast veggies turn out even better than when I did them in my Smeg oven in another home. I could go on....but I will conclude my highly recommending this cooker for the quality of meals it produces and for the ease with which you can clean it - my husband does the dishes and he loves how the basket sections split out easily for separate washing. Get it!
How did I survive pre air fryers?
I find this fantastic. The number one benefit is zero preheat time. The added bonus is it’s up on the bench top away from kids and easy to set and leave. The fact that chips and deep fried options taste even better in it is an added bonus. The closer, it’s all dishwasher safe
I had the appliance 5 months, was working well initially then the drawer would not release. Customer service from place of purchase forced the drawer open and from then it was not closing effectively.Returned for a refund.
My favorite and most used kitchen appliance
This appliance has been a godsend with an allergy child. I had previously thought air fryers were an appliance that were just for those looking for a healthier alternative to deep frying but this is so much more. Most foods cook substantially quicker than a traditional oven so it makes for low fuss cooking
It cooks quickly
Preheating is often unnecessary
It’s not overly loud
Food quality is superb
Saves time with most recipes over and above pre heating of a traditional oven
Cleaning however could be a little easier. I purchased a second air fryer and it’s noticeably easier to clean (Bellini)
Cost - they’re substantially more than other air fryers
I’d love it to be a tiny bit larger (it is however larger than most on the market)
We regularly cook whole roast chicken, fries, roast vegetables, meat, homemade nuggets and store bought fries. Meat is always perfectly tender and retains moisture and the foods that should be crispy are crunchy like fries and nuggets.
I’ve recommended the machine to a number of friends.
LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Absolutely love this airfryer. We use it several times a week and it has saved us so much time. It is so convenient and produces high quality foods, just as an oven would in half the time. We are a family of 4 and we easily cook meals for the entire family in it. Highly recommend.
An excellent upgrade
I had one of the original philips airfryers for many years prior to purchasing this one. The original was finally on its last legs- it had started to lose its non-stick coating and was emitting smells whenever I airfried in it. I picked this one up new for a bargain ebay plus price of $300, and it's been fantastic so far. Although it's much larger in capacity than my original airfryer, the footprint doesn't feel much different, and it doesn't visibly take up a lot more space. The airfryer itself is easy to use, and you can select from a number of preset temperatures, and turn the dial to set the timer. So far I have cooked mostly chips and a number of meats such as steak, sausages, pork chops, and salmon steaks- all with excellent results. I'm also keen to try roasts, especially pork and whole chickens which I'm told it should fit. As with the original airfryer, it is best practice to shake the items several times through cooking- this ensures that the items crisp up evenly. In terms of improvements on the original, there are several. I like that the bottom tray can be removed for cleaning (grease would always get stuck in the old basket), I also like that the whole basket stays on a sliding hinge when you pull it out - this means you don't have to push the fryer right back against the wall to remove the items. Another improvement is the softer beeping sound when the cooking is complete- great when there's a sleeping baby at home. Although no-one technically "needs" an airfryer, it's amazing to cook with when busy as it's simply "set and forget"- no chance of accidentally leaving the oven on or burning food.
In terms of cleaning, it is super simple, just pull everything out and place in the dishwasher. It is important to keep on top of the cleaning the top heating element regularly (this part can't be removed, but turn the item upside down and scrub) as this will contribute to cooking smells if not cleaned regularly- something i learned from my initial airfryer.
overall, happy with the purchase!
Purchased in June 2019 for $300.00.
I am very happy with this purchase. The quality of food produced from this air fryer is very good. Best for reheating the Pizza, KFC chickens and chips. I mostly use it for making the fried and wedges.
Cleaning is also very easy.
poorly made, stay away from Philips
Air fryer lasted 6 mths, front dial/button became faulty, couldn’t find receipt so no warranty, I expected a little longer out of it than that for just under $500. Absolute rip off and very poorly made. Shop around there are better on the market. Aldi offers 3 yr warranty
We are pleasantly surprised by the functions & ability of the airfryer to cook a diverse range of products.
Cakes in a 20cm round tin are cooked to perfection in much quicker times than the oven.
Roasted vegetables are cooked in next to no time with minimal amounts of oil.
The family enjoyed chicken breasts cooked with a light spray of olive oil & balsamic reduction.
The airfryer is easy to wash & the coating looks as though it will be long lasting.
My one criticism is it is bulky comparative to the basket size & it would be great if the capacity could be further increase without increasing its footprint.
Recommend this product to everyone who likes cooking
This is the fifth Philips Airfryer I have purchased - all from TVSN. Purchased the original model around eight years ago and from the beginning I have been impressed with what you can produce and how quick and easy it is to use.
Have found that the XXL model is worth additional cost and gives you more space to cook. Currently have this model and the smaller Philips Turbo Star model on my bench at all times.
My first XXL model was worn out after daily use for a number of years thus I purchased this model recently. Can recommend it to anyone - try making Pork Belly it is delicious. Only ever tried cooking meat, eg steak, once and we were not impressed with the result - this would probably be that we prefer our steak to be cooked Blue and the air fryer does not sear the meat - otherwise perfect.
A delight to clean, we throw the the basket and the container into the washing up machine and they come out perfectly clean. Plus when cleaning the unit it is interesting to see just how much fat/oil goes into the bottle we eventually throw into the rubbish bin.
Thank you Philps and Gabi from TVSN.
Great Product but NO accessories available therefore reduces its usefulness
Purchased Philips Avance Airfryer in January 2019 for $400 & also purchased the ONLY accessory, THE Baking Pan.
The Baking Pan lasted 6 months before it fell apart, which Harvey Norman did give me back my money.
Harvey Norman have XL Avance Airfyer on special now for $299 & also has this Baking Pan on CLEARANCE for same price I paid for it in January. Philips don't have any baking pans, simply told me to go back to shop where I purchased it. I did go back to Harvey Norman & they credited XL baking pan. I can only purchase online & pay delivery charge which I refuse to do as warranty is 24 months, NOT 6 months. Philips don't make any generic pans to fit their machines so this Airfryer is redundant if the only basket I have also falls apart. Not bad for Philips to sell a machine for $400 that's not worth the materials it is made from.
Purchased in January 2019 for $395.00.
We use this every single day! Love it
The food we cook in our airfare is amazing. Perfectly cooked every time and the best thing is, you put the food on, press a few buttons and don’t need to do anything else! No more turning sausages, fish or steak to make sure it’s all cooked properly. This has been a life saver on a busy work day when I’m rushing around trying to do 4738202 at once.
Easy to clean, it all goes in the dishwasher!
Purchased in April 2019.
Revolutionise the way you cook
The Philips Airfryer has quickly become my favorite kitchen appliance, it does everything. I can grill, roast, fry and bake. I cook chicken, pork, lamb, vegetables and even baked donuts. It saves me time, no preheating required, food cooks quicker and best of all I don’t need to add any oil to my meals. I have owned/used my airfryer for 6 months and have recommended it to my friends and family.
Love this machine
I brought this yesterday I am so in love with it already. Best money I have ever spent. Its easy to use, easy to clean. The food tastes amazing I am really happy
Now I finally have one, I can’t live without it!
Crisps food up perfectly with no added fat and without drying it out. I am always wowed by the results! I’ve made crispy chicken wings, sweet potato chips, fries a no even brownies with this pocket rocket! Can’t wait to discover the next treat it does magic on...
Purchased in May 2019.
Absolutely love it!
My poor oven... I haven't used it since I got the airfryer! I am completely converted and have loved experimenting with new meals and recipes since receiving it! Not only that it cuts my cooking time down and is done in no time! Meats are so succulent! I can also pop the trays in the dishwasher! Thanks for creating such a great product that makes mumlife easier!
