RedGum GX390 Landowner Chipper

A couple of shortfalls but on the whole it appears to be very well made and would highly recommend it after 7 hours continuous use. Time however will tell the whole story so watch this space. The Engine is typical of all Honda products, cant be faulted and starts very easy for a larger capacity pull start engine. The GX390 has a reputation second to none right throughout industry so I do not foresee issues with it long term. My gripes with the machine are very few, firstly, the underside of the inlet chute is a smidgen low for filling the Fuel tank easilly. Using a smaller size funnel and 4ltr Fuel Can found pouring was hindered somewhat by the bottom of the chute, then tried a bent nozzle on the Fuel Can, same issue. Syphoning solved the problem thereafter given a few mishaps so Im concious of the problem now and it wont happen again. The plus side to the Chute being a bit low however is the inlet for the Chute is at a good level and angle for feeding in product of all sizes. Drop in and Gravity does the rest until the Drum catches the waste. Any higher to help accessing the fuel tank easier would be a little uncomfortable for loading branches all day and if the Angle is altered it would probably hinder the ability to self feed smaller and lighter waste material via gravity. The second gripe I have is clearing either Chute requires bolt removal instead of something a bit easier - something like you would see on a box trailer tailgate for example (which mine is about to get if possible). Large green leaf matter such as you would find on Umbrella trees tends to clog the outlet pretty regularly if you dont control the volume and feed rate of the branches laden heavilly with large leaf material. All other sizes are perfect, particularly if there is a size of between 20 and 40mm branches spitting through the cutters to help blow the leaves through. The final gripe I have is the lack of handles to lift the chutes off and on so watch the fingers when fitting them back on as the chute inlet and outlet material is quite robust - so quiet heavy!! The powdercoated Chutes and body is a big plus for long term metal survival compared with cheaper painted units. Still not a scratch in the Chute after 7 hrs of almost continuous use. The Blades appear very easy to change or reverse when you need to. As for cutting/ chipping branches, the book says its good for 90mm and even though I didnt go that large, it chews softwoods with ease up to at least 60mm. Given the shaft and bearing size for the drum, I'm sure it will handle larger materials imo. Belt adjustment is very easy and pushing it around is quite easy as well given large inflatable wheels. They do supply a small towbar for a ride-on mower or qaud which is also a big plus for acreage.. So all in all im very happy with it and if time proves differently I will ammend this review.
