Rheem 5 Plus Stellar (850330) Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPN: 850330With the dam gas laws possibly changing here in Victoria I was thinking of getting a new hot water system as a spare , as our current one is 25 years old (built 5/11/1999 ) never been serviced and is still going great so want an exact replacement just in case it decides it’s time is up . After reading about them here (the 850330N ) are the new ones built the same as only ones as they only seem to last 10/15 years and have pilot light issues?
Hi John, my updated replacement Rheem 5 plus Stellar is identitical to my 20 yo one, so I'm hopeful that it will last just as long, it's certainly performing well, time will tell
I bought a new model 850330 and had it installed less than 10 months ago. Since then, the flame has gone out out over 5 times every time we have a windy day or night. This reliability is unacceptable. Is there a solution? What can I do? The equipment works but just goes out on windy days!!
I have this model installed less than a year ago and I have had to re-light the flame every time we have a windy day or night. This is really unacceptable! Is there a fix for this?
I had a stellar gas domestic outdoor water heater 850 series 330 360 model installed yesterday, the plumber told me that it had a 10 year warranty - as the previous unit had failed and needed to be urgently replaced I did not shop around - I now have two concerns 1. is he correct that the warranty period is 10 years and if so do I receive a warranty document from Rheem 2. the cost to replace the unit was over $4600. This seems excessive based on what I have read today. As a single retiree this is a huge cost for me which I have had to meet.
That is an excessive price for a Stellar model. Ours was approx $2k installed. Sadly, only the tank is 10 year warranty. The burner is only 12 months. Our 2.5 year old Stellar replaced a failed 7 year old model, and has a failed burner unit. Rheem were no help with any kind of reimbursement even after two plumbers had said this was exceptional and shouldn't have happened. Ours is now limping along but if the gas goes out, we need a new unit (council are doing works this month so it's happening). Sadly, the most recommended models for a family house is the Stellar.
Yesterday I had installed a Rheem stellar gas domestic outdoor water heater 850 series 330 360 model purchased from Reece. As it was urgent to replace the non functioning system I did not have time to shop around, but based on the reviews below I am now worried that what I paid is excessive and that some information I received from the plumber may not be correct. 1. the cost to supply and install was in excess of $4600 which included a tampering valve (?) 2. I was told that the unit had a full 10 year warranty being a single family home, is this correct, if not, what can I do? As I have had to pay the account upon installation I have no redress if I wish to query the amount, but I am a single female retiree and find that sometimes tradespeople take advantage of my vulnerable situation.
The unit is making a noise that sounds like air escaping what could be

I have a 26/07/2004 unit. I'm in a rental property. I've been here for a short time and can't speak for the history of the unit. We have noticed abnormally high water use. I have noticed a little bit of drainage from the pressure relief valve and huge clouds of steam when the unit starts the burner. The steam is coming from both the condensation drain and through the front vents. I am starting to think that there is a small hole in the tank that leaks out into the insulation. When the water level gets low enough, it just refills and reheats. When it reheats, the water in the insulation gets hot and dries off as steam so there is no puddle.
The gas bill is also slightly higher than the last place too. I don't want to waste people's time so is it possible that I'm right? I would rather go to the agents with a piece a paper saying something needs to be fixed than just wasting their time and money on things that could upset them if I end up wrong.

I have a Rheem Stellar® SS 250L just installed October 2017. When I just got water taps in the house the value (cover by a yellow plastic cap) on the unit makes a whining noise. It will be constant doe a while and then finally goes away. What could this be?
Unsure if an issue with the system or pipes.
Never had an issue with our old Rheem system.

We have just had a theme stella 330 installed and every day the pilot light is out. We are igniting it every day at least twice. Is there a reason for this? It is not even a week old.

Hi Jerry, I have the exact same question. I heard that the rheem stainless steel cylinders dont require a sacrificial anode. Did find out? Regards Burke
Hi Burke
Apparently the stellar 330 have 2 anodes per tank, so not required as soon as normal, I have a person coming out at 5yr anniversary to replace.
Hope this helps
Cheers Jery
Hi, did anyone find out where the 2 anodes are located on the rheem stellar gas hws 130 litre? I have the vitreous enamel steel tank but they are not located in the tank under the top plastic cover. Regards Murray

The expansion control valve at the bottom of our Stellar 330 (gas) is dripping cold water constantly at the moment. Date of heater manufacture is 2013. When I lift the lever the check flow it just trickles a little. Am I to presume it needs replacing?
Will this affect our water bill out of interest?
Cheers for a reply, Jacqui

HI, we have new house built less than 2 years ago with Rheem Stellar 330. For last two weeks Pilot light keeps going out seems every two to three days and it seems to be a common fault? Anybody can help ?
I phoned and complained, and flat out refused to pay any service fee, my complaint got escalated, they came out and replaced the gas lighter so far so good But point out that this is a common fault and the system is useless without a pilot light and should have longer warranty being an important component

I have the same issue with this POS. House is 2 years new and Rheem are also trying to sham us a service fee for what looks like a common defect with these systems. Issue persists.
Hi, I get a very loud high pitched noise coming from the Water Heater whenever I switch on the reticulation. This has been going on for ages and I initially thought the noise was coming from the retic system somewhere as the only time you hear the noise is when it is running. Hot water fine, no problems at all. I guess the heater needs looking at and probably a service as it's 5 1/2 years old. Can you please give me an idea of what it's likely to cost and I would like to be sure the problem is solved? I don't want it serviced and the problem remains. Some advice would be appreciated. Surely I'm not the first to have a problem like this although it seems extremely weird to me as the 2 systems are not connected in any way that I can see. Thanks Alan

Problem is with the water meter. The noise is generated by faulty meter and resonates via the copper piping to the water heater which is 20 metres away! Discovered this by turning down the water pressure and sound diminishes. Alan

Hi i have a Rheem Stellar unit which was installed August 28th 2015. I didn't move into my new house until November 2015. The pilot light won't stay on. I have contacted Rheem and someone is coming out to service the unit tomorrow. They have advised me that since it was installed in August 2015 i am just shy of the warranty and will have to pay for the call out which i think is a joke as i only moved in, in November (Less than a year operational). Any advice would be appreciated. I am thinking of contacting consumer affairs as well.
Good luck getting RHEEMED to show any compassion. We had proof of phone calls/asking for advice, was told probably wind problem. We to were just out of warranty obviously they are selling poor product. NEXT REPAIR WE HAVE WILL BE RIPPING IT OUT. no prepared to pay $300-$400 for repairs every 2 years or so. ,
You should definitely contact consumer affairs. If a gas hot water service cannot last more than a year or maybe 2 or 3 years it is not merchantable quality and as such you are entitled to a repair or replacement. Rheem customer service were no help to me at all, I don't know how they continue to get away with this shoddy treatment.
We will never buy another Rheem product, neither will any family members, or friends.
