Pulley upgrade is good solution – As most have described here this tool is generally a great machine with just a few design problems. You will also now find that a lot of the spare parts are no longer available. I have recently repaired mine and found that the main shaft bearings are still able to be purchased. It is the drive side bearing that appears to do most of the work and… Read more

is prone to fail first (in my case it took 25 years!)

The weakest part of the machine is the alloy pulley on the flail drive shaft. I am not surprised to hear from my local repair shop that these are considered the worst part of the machine and fail regularly, which can result in damaging the end of the main shaft.

A quick and relatively easy way to fix this pulley problem is to NOT use the genuine part as a replacement (it is junk anyway!).

By using a two piece taper-lock pulley (cast-iron) you will never have to worry about pulley problems again! The parts you need can be found here: https://www.aimsindustrial.com.au/spa125-1-suits-1610-taper-lock-1-groove-cast-iron

https://www.aimsindustrial.com.au/1610-series-3-4-bore-3-16-key-taper-lock-bush

Just carefully remove the old alloy pulley and fit the new one (you may need to re-adjust the belt tension) and your pulley problems will be over!

It was great machine until I replaced the blades – Easy to start but heavy to pull over 6.5 home motor. I replaced the blades and spacers in 2017 Now i wish i had kept the old blades The new Genuine blades are made out of poor quality metal. Not a lot of use and they are bent and dinted. Paid a lot of money for genuine quality and got ripped off.  Show details

Upgrading the engine – I always found the 3.5 hp engine that came with the machine a little underpowered, and had to take great care not to overload it. There is a tendency, when it is jammed to rev it up and skid the belt to get it going again to avoid the hassle of manually unclogging it. I had another engine, and not wanting to spend any money, I,m using that one, the only thing is, it is 10 hp, so it will be very interesting.  Show details

Rover Petrol Chipper shreader – Bought new a Rover petrol 3inch chipper shreader. The thing worked but VERY time consuming. This applys to all chippers. They are handy on small suburban acerage without real trees but useless on bigger blocks They only like straight branches Palm branches can be done but need to be extra dry (slow) If you have lots to do a safe fire is better by… Read more

far rather than spending forever feeding the machine. I regret buying at c$1400 and managed to get $800 after little/no use.Think twice before buying any chipper even a trip to the local tip is preferred

Works well, but needs a few design mods – I bought my Chip n'Shred about 6 years ago, second hand. Already a few years old. I mulch a lot of different materials. I find it doesn't draw the material down the feed chute very well, the pulls in a big lump and bogs. Especially fiberous material like grape vines. Then need to remove grate to remove material. Replacing the grate can be a… Read more

pain, sometime having to lie on ground and look up under machine to align holes and pins. A tube welded between the holes would have made this a lot easier.

The aluminium pulleys are to light for the machine. After replacing them once with relatively expensive OEM they cracked again within months. I replaced with steel taper lock pulley and no problems for years since.

Currently servicing the flail blades. Note, the rods holding the flail blades are subject to wear, so should keep an eye on wear if you do lots of work. The rods on mine are 25% worn through.

After the above flail blade repair I attempted sharpening the chipper blade on grinder. The result… Read more

Rover Petrol Chip N Shred – I have had this shredder for 12 years and it has done a lot of heavy duty work as I live on acerage. Never had a problem starting it. Still no corrosion after 12 years. It had the original spark plug for about 8 years!. I like the shredder as it is easy to move around and can shred/chip almost everything including palm leaves and bamboo. The… Read more

chipper function is easy to use and easily chips branches up to 70mm. If the shredder gets choked, it's a simple job to clean it out.

After 10 years use it was a bit worn out, but because I liked the machine, I ended up replacing the flails, flail shafts, the main drive shaft, the drive pulley ,the chipper blade and the drive belt for about $300. It took me an afternoon to rebuild the machine. Changing the oil every 6-12 months is a straightforward job.

I have never used another shredder, so I can't really compare, but I also never felt sorry about buying the Rover all those years ago. Reliable, robust, easy to move around Perhaps a bit expensive with all the cheap Chinese machines now in the market.

It Corrodes – Despite meticulous cleaning, the body of the machine corrodes. What is more there is a metalic incompatibility between the petrol tank and the bracket that holds it causing petrol to leak on to the heated engine. It also has the tendency to eject bolts from the engine housing! It is a reasonable chipper of branches up to 3.5 cm and is an excellent… Read more
