i bought the equivalent model 3 years ago and was very happy with it but at 77 decided to go for the 46 cm self propelled which has 2 batteries and much more power; worth it but more expensive! as long as you avoid tge 18 volt mowers ryobi mowers are adequate simple and well designed Show details
Love this mower. Relatively quiet and heavy enough to make good job of my lawn. However- wheel bearings do not seem big enough to last. Threw a bearing after 2 years. Ryobi do not repair. They do however replace without issue (Bunnings). Depending how you feel about throwing away a nearly perfect mower might influence your purchase. I took it back… Read more
expecting a new bearing and ended up with a new mower. I might never have to buy another again if they keep breaking.
Lawn mower is very unreliable. Recommend for small yard only. Blades wear out very quickly and battery doesn’t last long. Very overpriced considering you need to buy another 300$ battery if you want to do more than 1/4 acre. Worst decision I’ve ever made, stick with petrol! Garbage Show details
At first I thought it was ok but now I am just waiting for it to give up and go back to a 4 stroke mower . The mower is underpowered and struggles plus gives an uneven cut . I am using a 4AH battery which drains quickly and the mower has trouble throwing the cut grass into the catcher . These mowers are ideally suited to a small property . Before you buy check out the replacement cost of a new battery Show details
We've had our mower for nearly 5 years. It doesn't get heavy use. Mower has been OK to operate, except for the catcher which has never fit properly. We've looked after it but, unfortunately, it needs some repairs - I can't find anywhere to repair… Read more
it. I phoned the Ryobi customer service centre and they said they have no authorised repairers who will touch it as it's outside it's 4 year warranty. Very disappointing. Time to change brands, I think.
Follow-up · Repairs needed relate to starting the mower. The catcher hooks have never fit properly and it blows grass out of the top gap between the catcher and the mower. I have had Greenworks and Stihl recommended for our next mower, although I'm guessing some other brands would be OK, too.
The Ryobi 36v 46cm battery operated lawn mower is surprisingly decent for what it is. And on the whole, a pretty good option for most small to medium sized yards. Here’s what it does well: Firstly the battery life on this machine is pretty good. You can get through a good sized yard easily and with some battery life to spare. And the charging is… Read more
fairly quick and easy. It’s easy to setup, it’s light and nimble and folds away well. In terms of size, it’s large enough to efficiently cut lawn without excessive amount of time spent doing so. And the wide cutting base that reaches to the wheel diameter makes it easy to get around fences and trees while grabbing as much grass as it can without needing to excessively whipper snippet the missed bits. And it does feel pretty sturdy despite its light size, and it can be stored in limited space.
What’s not so great starts with the grass catcher. It’s pretty small, so it needs to be emptied frequently. It’s actually small even for a mower of its size. The catch is a half metal frame with a mesh bag supported by a bottom plastic panel that is too flexible and warps its shape pretty quickly if you rest it on anything that’s not flat between mows. If you push the mower along, and decide you want to move it backwards to turn or get out of a corner, the flimsy catch folds under the mower and smears dirt on itself. And again, it warps. So then the mower can’t flick grass into the catch well as it’s too many angles for the grass to travel through and the whole thing becomes blocked. Basically, this mower really needs a catch that’s slightly larger, and more plastic than material. But from what I can see, Ryobi don’t offer this as an accessory. Second, it’s foldable - but the two side latch bolts are pretty hard to pull simultaneously to lower the handle. So you sort of need to yoga your body under the handle and pull and then collapse the bar over the mower. The handles for the latches also stick out in the only direction possible to get caught under fences and walls. So often trying to do edges gets you stuck under something and you’ve gotta jimmy the whole thing out. The battery compartment, while being located in an easy spot, has a spring loaded lid that can’t be opened at all if the handle is down. But if the handle is up, the spring is just aggressive enough to be inconvenient when trying to hold the lid back to remove the battery. And then snaps loudly shut once you’ve done so.
Overall, it’s good. It’s not amazing or fantastic. It has little bits and pieces that seem like an oversight. But there’s enough of those to make you think it’s a little cheap feeling. And then where it works well, you do become impressed by the fact it’s a battery operated electric mower. So it’s sort of mixed. I’m happy with it, and I’ll be keeping it. But when I’m ready to purchase another in the future, I think I’ll be looking at some of its nuances to make sure I’m just a bit happier with it.
Ryobi could stand to offer an aftermarket catch upgrade that is a rigid plastic on this. And I think then you’ve got a great mower.
After one year of use the wheels are falling off and the battery is dead. I use the lawn mower for a normal size garden, about once a month. Catcher fills after 3 minutes of mowing. Show details
Worst lawnmower I have ever owned – Facts this is the worst lawnmower I have ever owned or used. Ryobi tools and I have 13 Ryobi tools are great, however this is not the case with Ryobi 36V 46cm Brushless Lawn Mower 6.0Ah Kit R36LMW16. 1) the battery don't last (from day one) and it takes about 6 hrs to recharge 2) The catcher is of a poor design, so poor that it leaves more grass… Read more
behind that is catches 3) it states that it will do 500SQM, if I am lucky I get about 17 SQM. 4) the lawnmower is so bad that when its time to replace the battery's on my other Ryobi power tools, I will switch to an other system, like Bosh or similar quality well designed system. Build quality is great, mower only, not battery Ryobi should be ashamed of designing such a poor lawnmower, DONT wast you money.
Ryobi is rubbish – A mower that can’t cut lawn don’t waste your money Show details
Absolutely fantastic mower – I purchased this mower about 2 years ago, and it has surpassed all my expectations, it's an absolute fantastic mower, and l couldn't be happier with it Show details
Sounds like the self propel gears are stripped after only being used 3 times – I have owned this mower for just 4 weeks and until today very happy with it. Today when I press the lever for self propelled it won't move on a gentle uphill and a rapid clicking noise is heard which in my opinion sounds like the gears are stripped or partially stripped. I am returning it to Bunning tomorrow and NOT happy. When I returned it a… Read more
chap from the mower section of the store checked the mower and quickly discovered the noise and no forward motion with self propel. He asked if I wanted a replacement which I accepted. If it happens again I won't take the replacement and take a refund.
Wheels fell off – Would not recommend. This is the second of these that we have had. The first we returned after 12 months because the battery would stop after 15 mins of mowing. The new lawn mower lasted ok for 10 months and then both back wheels became wobbly and one fell off. Returned it to purchase point and got a refund. Not happy with how much we spent on it. A Pretty Good Electric Mower – Overall, I am pretty happy with this mower. It's not brilliant but it does an acceptable job. Being electric I understand some of the limitations - only 2 blades, won't go any lower than 25mm, have to mow slowly compared to a petrol mower, only a 46cm cut. None of these are the end of the world and I could tolerate them if it weren't' for the… Read more
cost - $800. Do you know what sort of petrol powered mower you can get for that sort of money?
I do like the height adjusting button as opposed to the normal lever setup and the catcher is an absolute breeze to put on and take off. The whole thing is very light and manoeuvrable and it's so quiet you could give the lawn a cheeky mow before 9am without the neighbours complaining.
It's got 3 different speed settings Eco / Smart / Power and none of them is suitable. Eco is good on the battery but is often too slow. Power cuts better but murders the battery. Smart keeps on hunting between the other two speeds. It doesn't cut very close to edges and I definitely have to use a whipper snipper before mowing where I could get away with it before.
Overall it's good, but not at this price point

Know better, choose better.
Great so far; some reviews seem confused – To be honest the "lawn" I'm wanting to tame around the shed is anything but a "lawn". It's a mess of what I think is kikuyu, crabgrass, weeds and ferns. I was using a cheapo corded Ozito that finally gave up from the abuse, and so now I'm trying what I hope to be a Ryobi more up to the task. So far so good, it made short work of the ~80m2 in about… Read more
a half of the 6Ah battery charge. The adaptive power thing takes a bit of getting used to, but seems to work ok.
Some of the reviews for this mower claim very poor battery life. Ryobi make a series of mowers that all look pretty similar, I suspect some of these reviews might be for the 18V mowers as I found the battery ran as expected. It's not going to soldier on for hours, the advertising claims the 6Ah battery runs for 45min on light conditions, which about matches what I've found so far.
When at the store, I was trying to compare this model - the R36LMW16 kit containing the R36LMW10 mower, 6Ah battery and 4A charger - to the R36XLMW16 kit (note the 'X'). Comparing the actual manuals reveals: - both mowers can carry two batteries, but the R36X can _use_ both batteries in parallel (and claims to allow higher current draw); the plain R36 second battery slot is a dummy, not even connected (why would you cart around a 1kg useless battery when mowing? one for the exercise fanatics? maybe if your garden shed is miles away?) - the R36X runs at 3600 RPM, vs. 2800 RPM for the R36 - the handles are different, no idea which might be better; the R36 is fine - the R36X has buttons and LEDs on the handle for "high power" and battery level - the R36X has a "easycatch" grass catcher, whatever that is - seems to be the same as on the R36 - the R36X kit has a 6A charger, vs 4 for the R36
TBH, I suspect the R36X is basically an updated version of the R36, but Ryobi have kept selling the older model as it's $100 cheaper.
Not worth it. Avoid – Single handedly the worst lawnmower I have ever seen. It is gutless and runs out of power after twenty minutes of use and I'm only mowing a standard backyard. The additional batteries cost 50% of the units total cost. The machine also stops periodically when it detects 'overload'. I didn't think running over a flower was deemed as a stressful task, yet, it is. Show details
Much improved model – We had the earlier model but the cut was very uneven & everything was out of plumb; Bunnings were happy to swap it for this latest model, & it is much better built. Now the cut is even & there are more adjustment steps. The 6Ah battery cost an extra $70 but is better than the 5Ah for thick couch grass. The mower is easy to push & does a good job. Show details
Good mower, shame screws rust so soon (just do some DIY and replace with stainless steel) – Good brushless motor. Cuts long grass even when wet. Screws rust within a few months. Do what I did, replace the screws before the screw heads rust so much that your screwdriver can no longer grip them. Replace with stainless steel screws ($10) Shame Ryobi skimmed out on $10 (probably $1 at their buy price at volume) and hence delivered a somewhat poor product Show details
Quick and easy to do lawns – Easy to use cuts good .simple to use 1 battery ok for small lawns .you have option to buy secound baterry for bigger lawns has the provision for 2 batterys.but only comes with one..works well on. Thick lawn.1 battery time was enough to complete nature stip and small front lawn area before needing a recharge.had to empty catcher about 5 times cause my lawn was very dence and thick..overal i recomend this mower Show details
No fuss and easy on the back – Purchased mower 1 month ago replacing heavier Greenfield 190cc 4 Stroke. Being over 60, the Ryobi is much lighter and makes mowing less of a strain on my back doing my 400 sq m lawn. Its so light it rolls away from me when trying to insert battery and need to have it against a wall. Cuts well although can not handle tuffets of grass in back part… Read more
of yard. In-built sensor will increase revs on sensing resistance but stops if more than it can handle. Was concerned battery would not last and would need to buy a back up battery but surprisingly half charge remains after mowing. The single arm blade is sharp although does not mulch leaves finer than the Greenfield and needs running over a couple of times. Charger only requires around 20~30min to charge a half charged battery. Have used silicone spray under deck to reduce grass build up as you can only use a blower and rag to clean rather than hose down. Lots of sharp edges from plastic moulding so use gloves. Does not draw from a second battery like the model above or allow choice of Regular, Econo or Power modes, but chose it for simplicity. Good lightweight high capacity catcher.
