as expected – This is one of a very tight genre of radios. A top seller from DSE and a handful of other retailers at about $ 150. Sells globally for the market that seek it. It has a very snappy AM receiver with inbuilt rod antenna , probably about the same sensitivity as your car radio. We have two of these at different family homes. Regular faults with them… Read more
include failure of the top tactile switches, and power transformer failures. Both problems can be repaired by anyone with some electronic knowledge, and parts easily obtained from Jaycar.
The radio is fitted with a LW band, useless in Australia where we don't broadcast on it, a few aircraft beacons can be heard on it. A regular shortwave band instead would be great. Also, the ubiquitous problem with almost all AM radios sold in Australia that the AM bandwidth is limited to about 2.5 kHz. We do broadcast 9 kHz signals here., so some attempt from manufacturers to satisfy this market would be appreciated.
FM performance is fine, and this radio fulfills the role of a kitchen radio well. A bit thirsty on batteries, even when radio is not on and in clock mode , so remember to keep it plugged in when home. It has a handy alarm clock radio function too, suitable replacement for your bedside clock radio.
Like all types of microprocessor controlled electronic equipment which is not fully sealed, it is likely to have problems in wet, humid environments, and direct exposure to sunlight. Be careful where you use and store it.
A DC input plug would be handy for these dedicated travel radios, but this one does not have it.
Other problems noted by reviewers have not been seen on our two.
Unable to use outback. Lasted 6 months – Wouldn't give you 10 cents for this piece of rubbish. Do not even think od buying one of these if you go away camping hunting ect. No reception even local had trouble with it from the start. Lesson learnt. Panasonic seems better but will wait and see how its goes
Good sound, but short life – Our first model lost the digital display after about 3 years. The second has failed within 3 months of the warranty expiring. The radio has good sound, is a neat unit and otherwise was ideal. But after both have failed well before expected, we won't try Sangean a third time.
poor quality radio – My friend bought two PR-D3L from DSL. Both failed soon after warranty period . DSL not interested. I bought one soon after his first one ,mine failed under warranty and was replaced by DSL.. Radio has lots of static and hard to hear clearly on digital stations. Don't waste your money
Excellent reception in an area where other radios has none – Can now get Sydney radio reception in the southern highlands. No other radio used could do this. There is no digital coverage in the Southern Highlands. Before buying we borrowed a Sangean radio from a friend and tried it and it worked fine. So when we purchased ours it worked fine. It worked as it said it would Have to pick the best location and direction for the good reception, does not work in all locations.
Works fine - for a while – We live in two places, inner Sydney and Central Coast. We've bought three of these D3Ls from DSE during the past 10 years, and they've all worked fine - for about 4 years. They're particularly good on AM most everywhere, and better than most for FM in the City, (Forget non-local FM beyond the city limits.) But, at maybe 4 years, the pre-set… Read more
buttons begin to play up, stopping altogether after 7 years. Before that however, the digital display gets corrupted and, for the next little while, loyal to the end, you try tuning the D3L by hand and visually unaided guesswork. Finally, as indeed happened yesterday with our most recent purchase, the darn thing suddenly dies, never to revive. I'm over Sangean. Great AM reception, rich sound. Old age sets in beyond warranty period
