This heater is a beauty! – Read these reviews (after) purchasing this heater and was immediately regretful. That is, until i started using it. No issues. It is a beauty, and i purchased it 2nd hand. Show details

Update on saxon mahogany smoke issue – I have moved the top baffle forward towards the door so the gap between front and rear is even. Has improved a bit. Doesn't pour out as much now. Also cleans out the flu to. Still wouldn't buy a saxon wood heater and bbq galore aren't interested in any feedback and as usual it's all our fault. Had wood heaters almost 40 years and this (3rd) is the worst. Modified fan so there a 6 second delay. Show details

A great heater if installed and operated correctly – Had a Saxon dealer supply and install into a new house in Tassie. (Y2020) Did a lot of homework before purchasing, ie visit various woodheater dealers and trade shows. Saxon had 8mm plate, no firebricks and 15 year firebox warranty. Both of the local hotels have this very same wood heater installed. House design featured best insulation and… Read more

sealing for drafts. The floor joists were beefed up below the heater due to the 200+ kg weight. Hearth is 28mm polished stone, 1400mm square. Flue goes straight up through 3000mm high ceiling, through roof cavity and no bends. Flue extends regulation height above the 6 deg pitch skillion roof. A anti down draft cowling/cap is fitted at top of flue. We burn mostly gum with some wattle mixed in. The fan is left on low setting. There is an isolation switch on wall adjacent to heater. We haven’t modified the heater wiring as written by some of the reviewers. We run the fan to get the house up to temperature with air vent 2/3 open. Once house is up to temp (20+ deg C) we close the air vent and shut fan off. The heater will maintain room temp and slow burn for 6-8 hours before reloading with wood. As mentioned, our insulation/building sealing is very good and hence will hold temp to 16deg C overnight if we shutdown heater at bed time. When loading heater with wood, we isolate fan power on wall, close air vent then slowly open the door and filling with logs. Once door is closed, open air vent 10%, switch power back on at wall, fan will start within 5 mins. Very rarely experience any smoke coming out through door whilst loading. House size is 300+ m2 plus we have a ducted heat transfer unit. The heater is great and we get positive feedback from visitors who sometimes say it’s too hot in the house. In closing, do your homework, get a Saxon dealer to install and you should be happy like us.

Happy after modifying – Purchased a week ago after reading previous reviews was a little optimistic. First thing I did was bypass 20 minute fan timer and close off vent holes on low damper setting with magnets. Since then heats the large house very well and burns all night for 12 hours plus. No smoke billowing out wuen opening door, do have a 5m flue and burn dry jarrah. Happy with purchase after initial 2 modifications. Show details

Fan spoils a good heater – The heater burns well, but the 20 minute fan delay every time you put wood in stops heat distribution, plus the fan is extremely noisy. These two features spoil it. Show details

Worst wood heater we have ever had the misfortune of owning! – We have the Saxon Mahogany, and the only good point is that it can take really big logs. It would certainly heat a large area if you could get the fire well established and burn at a fairly high rate. The problem is that in order to reload the box, there is a very real problem of smoke exiting the door into the room. We, like others, have a… Read more

2.5m flue above the roof line. The only time you can open the door is when the fire is in full flame, any other stage, your home will be filled with smoke. I now have a stool under the smoke detectors to hush them every time I need to reload the fire box. It is impossible to avoid the billowing smoke, despite opening the door really slowly to equalise before opening completely.

Given the health hazards of the smoke exiting into the room, the positive points about this heater fade into insignificance. Do not buy this heater, for almost $3500, there are far better options available.

So many problems – Hi I have a Saxon Mahogany, We have had endless problems. From filling the house with smoke coming from the top. Was advised to put a extension on top of flue. We done this with no improvement. Then we where advised to change the cowl to a anti draft one. Done this and have had some improvements. The other problems are the fire not… Read more

banking down from been full with wood it only burn 5 hours, the flame does not change from open to shut.

The fire is so hot it has damaged our wood floors.

The flue makes a banging noise if there’s any wind outside.

The handles that hot you can’t touch it.

I have been to Bbq galore so many times I've lost count.

And I've been in contact with Saxon direct and I’m getting no where.

Please give me advise.

Just dont do it to your self – Made in china rubbish. would pull it out if it didn't owe me a small fortune. Like every thing twice the price for half the built. plate lasted three days. looks like pizza stone. I am told if i play with the fan i will be braking the law? 20 min for start up after opening door, but it must be on full. on full the wood burns flat out and you have to put more wood on it in 18 min. guess what fan is useless.. z  Show details

Fan won’t work – Have had this fire for two days the fan won’t come on , it has a mind of its own the led light blinks constantly and the fan randomly turned itself on the following morning once the fire had gone out NOT HAPPY phoned bbq galore to report problem and told they don’t look after faults advised to go to web page and fill out form stating the problem… Read more

Too smokey, miss having a drawer underneath to start faster – Pain in the bum compared to our old one, you have to babysit it too much to get it going well, and sometimes have to sit holding the door open a little to let more air in. And if you forget to watch it and it is going out you cannot open to door to get it going again as the entire place gets bombed with smoke. I don't care what others say i hate it, wish our old one lived longer. It is a great size for large bits of wood but that is about it  Show details

Looks good but that's about it! – Purchased to replace a small very old Norseman heater. During the initial installation the fan had a mind of its own, turning on by itself. After repairs and replacement the problem persisted. The main problem however is the billowing smoke every time the door is opened. We were advised to extend the flue which we did but it made no difference. We… Read more

have been trying to remedy this since last winter so now the 12 month warranty is almost up! We have been refused a refund but said we could choose another heater. As I feel this could be a problem with all the larger heaters I have chosen a smaller which is less expensive so feel I should be entitled to a refund of the difference but was told we have to pay for the "usage " of the Saxon heater!!!!

We have given a few explanations including the trees in our garden and the fact we have down lights. However I have noticed that some brands of larger heaters have a 7 or even 8 inch diameter flue when the Saxon has a 6 inch flue.

Perfect – Love the extra large firebox. No other heater I have seen with such a large firebox. This is because the steel is 8mm compared to the 4-5mm steel on every other woodfire heater I looked at and does not require bricks. This also gives it a 15 year warranty. can get this heater absolutely pumping and adequately warms a large house. You can also reduce the wood to just have a small fire going so i am stoked with it.  Show details

VERY VERY HAPPY – We bought the Saxon Mahogany because we have a very large Home and needed a bigger Heater than what we had, the only problem was every time you open the door or dampen the heater the fan turns off because of the emission Laws, so I had an electrician friend disconnect the censor and now i can turn the Heater down and still have the Fan on and… Read more

also i put magnets over the hole so i can shut the flue 100% and still have a log there in the morning.

p.s. We have just noticed that the fire is almost out in the morning after filling firebox up before bed, I had a look and found the magnets had moved off the air holes. i slid them back into place with pylers all fixed and burning slow

Cheers

Very unhappy – We bought a heater two years ago, first had sparks even when door was closed, not happy with the heating area, also got a large area to heat, and now it rattles, very annoying, when we tried to approach manufacturer they dismissed us saying it was installed wrong, not their problem, definitely wouldn't recommend them

Very smokey - very annoying – We had always thought Saxon was a reputable brand but every time we open the door smoke billows out!!!! It is not so bad when it is hot and blazing, but once it get down in flame and you open door to stoke and refill (we have excellent quality wood) it fills the room with smoke. Smokes like a train!!!

This heater is terrible – Purchased this heater because it states it heats 35 sq. The heat out put would be lucky to heat 10 squares. Had a jindara before this one and it had no problems heating the same area. Very disappointed. It also has the smoke problem when you open the door. Very poor does not heat the area as per brochure

whatever you do DONT LET IT GO OUT – We bought this heater and regret it immensely! Once its lit it does heat fantastically, but no matter what we do we cannot open the door to put wood on it because smoke bellows out filling the room! Its horrible, it constantly sets the smoke detector off! If it goes out the entire house gets filled with smoke because the door needs to be opened… Read more

Good heat output but smokey – We have a massive room to heat, so the Saxon seemed like the right choice. Like many other reviews, we have found that smoke is a major problem. We have had to modify our habits to suit the heater. Always have the fan off when opening the door. A good habit anyway, but difficult on the Saxon, because of the switch location and it is hard to… Read more

turn.

Be careful with wood selection. Only one piece of green wood at a time mixed with dry. A heater of this size should be able to handle any wood type once it is hot.

Combine fast burning and slow burning wood. Not sure why this works, but it seems to be the only way to minimize smoke leakage.

Open door slowly. The door needs to be left ajar for a minute before opening to restoke.

We have a massive flue - over 9 meters, that draws incredibly. And it still smokes!!

The heater fan is also very noisy. We find that when on max, we have to nearly double the volume on our TV to be able to hear over it. Size. Smoke, noise

Power improved – I got one of these large saxon heaters last year and had it fitted by a local builder, and at first I had the same issue as the above with the smoke. I put up with it until last month when it all got the better of me and I went back to where I got it from and after speaking to the guy in there we worked out that the builder only fitted the flue to… Read more ·  3

the minimum for the council. The guy in the shop told me that much like a high performance car these high performance wood heaters needed a better flue and it was as simple as adding an extra length to the top. It did look a bit odd at first, but after seeing how it changed the way the heater worked I am more than happy. Only wish I had spoken to them earlier. Heat output, advice choosing the wrong installer

Saxon Woodheater – We purchased the Saxon Mahogany woodheater at the beginning of winter 2012. It was close to $2500, it heats our 5br house well, but everytime you open the door, smoke pours out. No matter what you do (turning the fan off, moving the piece at the top) smoke still billows out. It fills the hoouse with smoke and that is just to put another log on. I wouldn't suggest buying this heater. Very dissappointed. Heats very well. Too smoky, fan is loud

Bigger is not always better! – Last year we decided to upgrade to a larger firebox which could accommodate larger logs however now wish we had stuck to our old one (another brand) as we quickly realised that the Saxon Mahogany has a serious design fault, as almost every time you open the firebox door to add another log a large cloud of smoke is released into the room. We… Read more

contacted the manufacturer who admitted that there had been similar complaints and suggested we try switching the fan off and opening the door very slowly (which we already had & made no difference) & to check that our flue is the required length (yes it was) Finally we spoke to another firebox retailer about our issues and they told us that they avoid selling the larger models as the smoking issue is a common one & told us that we'll simply have to get used to repainting our ceiling on a regular basis. A very disappointing purchase! Ability to accommodate large logs, easily heats up our large home Releases serious amounts of smoke into the room when the firebox door is opened

Have you gone above the min heat for your flue? I found that an extra peice makes a great differance.
