Scandia Edge

I'm honestly surprised by the poor reviews. My Edge 70 does an excellent job heating our large open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, it's around 400m³ and it gets too hot at times! The unit was already installed when we bought the house eight years ago, and it's been solid ever since. It takes large bits of wood easily and only has two settings, hot and medium, there isn’t a low setting so you can't choke it down to last all night. Unless you load it up just before bed, there’s usually not much left burning by morning. That said, the two settings do produce noticeably different burn rates.
One issue I’ve noticed is a fair amount of smoke leakage when starting the fire, like with the door wide open and trying to get the fire started. I’m not sure if that’s normal or if the flue just doesn’t draw properly until it heats up.
Also, the door attachment/arm that holds it open broke, but I contacted Scandia and they responded quickly letting me know where I could get order a replacement. I’ll fix it as soon as someone inevitably burns my current makeshift door holder that looks suspiciously like a bit of kindling.
I've added a few pics, one has a can for scale (no I'm not American, I just love Dr Pepper I don't get it a lot and thats the only can I had on hand) and in the can pic you can see the offending silver hinge/arm that no longer auto locks open, behind the bucket peaking out is my trusty door keeper opener that I jam in the silver arm.
Anyway, I know they are not making these anymore but I wanted to put my 2 bobs in.

Do not Purchase Scandia - Customer Service Nil – Baffling broke / disintegrated in fireplace during first season of use. Bunnings were good enough to replace, but it broke again and I am advised it is dangerous to use without the baffling. Spoke to customer service who advised it was my responsibility to repair although it has not been working properly from first season, they would send out new baffling as a courtesy - but it was never received. Do not purchase this fireplace - no response to complaint of fault. Will be taking it to the ombudsman if not resolved.

Hi Hunter, your issue has been escalated and your case is currently being looked into, you will receive a response directly shortly. It is important to note that warranty for consumable items such as baffles or firebricks (in the Edge 50) is only the one year from purchase. Vermiculite (crushed brick) baffles and firebricks are designed to be energy absorbers that help prolong the life of the steel firebox up to and beyond the 10 year warranty given for the firebox itself. Vermiculite can crack over time as a result of normal use in a solid fuel fireplace, this is the same with other fireplace brands also. Your spare parts are currently in transit ex Melbourne and as a result of the floods in WA there are delays in shipping, we will continue to monitor this and will endeavour to get you an eta once it is known. Nice if you don’t need it to heat the house – The smoke sometimes even comes out of the unit with the door closed and we couldn’t rely on it to keep us warm living in the hills. It looks lovely but more suited to a nice ambiance than relying on it to heat the room.

Hi Jessica, thanks for taking the time to submit your review on the Edge 70 radiant fireplace. I would like to help you with your fireplace but i need to understand more, has your fireplace always performed this way or has it developed over time? Have you had a chimney sweep or local technician service the appliance?
Amazing wood stove – It looks great and heats the whole house. The ceramic hearth was easy to install and easy to clean

Hi Snow, thanks so much for taking the time to write your review, you are correct the Scandia Edge 70 is no longer ranged at Bunnings. We now have only the Edge 50 which is slightly smaller. You are correct in your issue described, the flue and firebox will need to heat up before drawing correctly, i recommend leaving the door open in the early kindling stages to ensure lots of air gets in to help it heat up the fire before putting in bigger pieces, The silver hinge you refer to is a spare part and i would be happy to send you one if you can email us with your address. Our email is service@scandiagroup.com.au send your email attn Graham and i will look after it for you.
