All rye, no couch – Once again I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing the product. I'm familiar with seed mixes containing rye and know that the rye sprouts quickly to create the right conditions for the desired seed in the mix, but with this product there was just rye. Not a single blade of couch has sprouted and it has been a couple of months, with loads… Read more

of rain and/or watering.

Edit: I spoke to the people at Scotts and they said it was because the weather was cool and couch only grows in warm weather (despite the fact that I seeded my lawn in February). Well, it is now December, 10 months later and back into summer. Update on the lawn? Not a single blade of couch. All rye (which is now dying off).

This product is complete rubbish – I bought this product because I wanted a couch lawn. But not a single blade of couch has resulted from it in over a year since it was planted. Initially there was good growth from the seeds but within a couple of months that growth died off. I took a close look at the packet and it indicated that actually it was supposedly a mix of rye and couch.… Read more

The rye was there to give the quick appearance of growth before the couch got going. But the rye browned off despite ideal watering and fertilising. I can only conclude that the seed was all rye and there was no couch at all in the packet. I called Scott’s to complain and they gave me a refund. But now I have a terrible lawn - not a s Kerri know of couch. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

What a deceitful rip off – I purchased two packets of this product and prepared the ground for sowing what I expected to be a perfect Couch lawn. After sowing the Seed in January and giving regular waterings I was devastated that after five months no Couch grass was visible. The sowing was very successful but not resulting in what was required. The germinated seed grew to… Read more

about 200mm before I mowed it for the first time. I mowed it several more times over the five month period and the grass was growing vertically and quite strongly. However, there was no lateral spreading of roots and rhizomes as one would expect with Couch grass so I contacted Scotts by email and explained the situation. I suggested that the wrong seed was supplied as the results indicated that the seed was Rye and not Couch.

The response I received from Scotts read :- "we are disappointed to hear you are not satisfied with our Lawn Builder Seed and Feed Couch. The seed does take longer to germinate than the annual ryegrass but seed sown in late January should be through by now" After five months still no Couch is visible.

I replied to that advice by saying that the grass did not have the appearance of Couch and despite it growing profusely, it appeared to be Ryegrass. Scotts replied to this and I quote :- "Scotts Lawn Builder Seed and Feed Couch. The box does contain more than 75% annual rye seed which forms nursery bed to protect the couch until it germinates" It should be noted that no mention of this was made in their earlier response. I was also told that their technical people would be in touch with me. The packaging makes reference to Ryegrass but not the enormous amount. When I pointed out this fact and said it was deceitful to supply over 75% rye seed in a packet labelled Couch, I did not hear back from them after that.

I am disgusted that such a deceptive product description has not been picked up by the Department of Consumer affairs. I am posting this to warn others that the product they may purchase thinking it is Couch, is in fact over 75% ryegrass. When Spring arrives, I guess I will have to poison this grass and purchase instant turf if I want a Couch lawn.
