Cleans well. Battery NEVER dies – I have tile floors and carpet and the Shark vac cleans both well. The only thing it's had some difficulty picking up is powders from tile. Took me several passes, but still got it all in the end. It does require a bit of maintenance cleaning, but I'm happy to do that if it keeps working the way it does. Far better than any big brand cordless stick… Read more

vac I've ever owned. I like the flex technology in the neck and use it to go under TV cabinets and other furniture. The cord can get in the way but I'm willing to ignore that since I won't need to replace a dead battery ever 12 to 24 months. Overall the build quality is good. It's not top notch but it's sturdy enough and durable enough. The rose gold paint on the vacuum head will come off easily where you use your foot to push it down. It won't stand unless bent over at the flex joint in the neck, but you can lean it against things if need be. I think it lives up to its claims.

Terrible vacuum – First time I used this vacuum, I thought amazing it really works well. However second, third time it is getting clogged straight away and I am constantly cleaning and emptying the roller. It is advertised to be a pet vacuum however it does not cope well with it at all. I spend more time emptying and cleaning the vacuum then actually vacuuming.… Read more

Contacted Catch to get a refund, they say contact shark so I Shark to get a refund and they are not helpful. I sent videos and pictures and as we brought from catch of the day they said we need to contact them. Then catch says we need an RA number from Shark - but shark wont give it to me as its 'not a manufacture's fault' and now no one is replying to my emails and I am stuck with a vacuum I can't use even though it does not do what it says it should do.

This hungry Shark keeps our floors looking sharp – Overall, this Shark vacuum offered impressive cleaning performance – equally well on both tiles and short-pile carpet. We’ll be using it a lot in the future. The only downsides were how heavy it is, and how the cleaning head often lifts up off the floor without you wanting it to. Suction This hungry Shark eats up everything in its path. The… Read more

suction power on this vacuum is impressive, and probably the best suction on any vacuum I’ve used before, including a Dyson cordless stick vac bought in 2017. This is a nice surprise, since the wattage isn’t especially high (450 watts). You can choose between 2 suction levels, but the first level is sufficient if you’re vacuuming regularly.

The vacuum picks up even tiny bits of things on the floor, and leaves it spotless afterwards. It leaves carpets feeling both cleaner and softer. It also leaves those satisfying defined clean lines on carpets after vacuuming.

Design and build quality

This vacuum definitely has a solid build quality, which you can feel by picking it up. I liked that the cleaning head isn’t too wide, as this makes it easier to reach more narrow spaces like behind the toilet. The handle also has a bendable section, which makes it easier to get under furniture and allows for a more thorough clean.

The cord length is 10 metres, which is really handy. You don’t have to worry about running out of cord, and this was never a problem when vacuuming, even in larger rooms.

One thing that is slightly annoying is that you have to hold the vacuum at a specific angle for the cleaning head to angle correctly to touch the ground. Since I’m short (5’ 1) and therefore closer to the ground I tend to pull the vacuum down low from where I’m holding it, which causes the head to lift up off the ground (kind of like a see saw).

There’s a quick fix for this – just put your foot on the cleaning head, which will touch the ground and light up green again so you can resume vacuuming. But if you zone out it can create the wrong angle a lot, which lifts the cleaning head off the floor frequently. It can be a bit of a pain to keep correcting it.

Weight

My only other gripe with this vacuum is how heavy it is.

It’s 4.8 kg, which doesn’t sound like much, but I often notice shoulder and lower back pain on my right side (I’m right-handed) soon after starting vacuuming. It is a heavy unit and not really manageable to vacuum a whole house without stopping to have a break from the pain. I also found the vacuum hard to steer, maybe partly because of the weight.

However my partner, who is considerably stronger than me, didn’t find it heavy or difficult to steer, so maybe this just depends on the person. But if you have existing back and shoulder pain maybe avoid this vacuum, as it could aggravate the pain.

Although the vacuum is quite bulky, you can fold it in half after using it for easier storage, which saves space and is also more sightly if you don’t have a spare cupboard to store it in.

Noise level

Considering its great suction power, this vacuum is pretty quiet. It doesn’t make much more noise than our little Xiaomi robovac. The noise was never annoying or distracting.

Attachments

My partner really liked the crevice tool, as he was able to get a lot of old cobwebs out from ceiling corners using it. The dusting brush is also useful as a makeshift hand vacuum.

If you’re feeling lazy and want to clean edges, e.g. in front of doors, you don’t even have to use an attachment. You can just unclick the cleaning head attachment from the machine and use the suction coming from the handle to get into edges and along skirting boards, etc. Not all vacuums let you do this, so this is quick and convenient for cleaning thin areas.

Cleaning

The dustbin – The dustbin is easy to empty, it’s clearly labelled “Press to empty,” with another labelled button to open the dustbin lid and empty the contents directly into the bin.

The shape of the dustbin makes it difficult to get all the dust, debris and hair out just by tipping the vacuum bin contents into the trash. You have to get your hands in to get everything out, which can be kind of gross if you’re not wearing gloves and you can end up accidentally swallowing a cloud of dust.

Self cleaning brushroll – This is a huge time saver, as it prevents too much hair from getting tangled around the cleaning brush. Other vacuums that don’t have this feature (like our Xiaomi robovac and older Dyson stick vac) mean that you have to spend ages cutting the hairs off the brush roll and other more fiddly parts of the vacuum’s anatomy that hair has gotten firmly stuck around. To do it properly can take 15+ minutes sometimes. With this anti-hair brushroll, it took 5 minutes to open the vacuum and clean the brushroll, hair and all.

The filter screen is a little cylinder that can be easily removed for cleaning, rather than having to stick your fingers in sideways with a cleaning cloth to clean around it.

All in all this is an efficient vacuum, and if you don't mind a bit of weight in your vacuum, is likely to give you plenty of satisfying cleaning sessions.

A good stick vacuum with great motorised heads – I have been using this Shark HZ390 for an extensive period of time, and this has been a good vacuum overall. The overall design and build quality were solid, and I especially liked the bendable/flexible wand making cleaning tight corners and spots far easier. The Pros: 1. The double cleaning motorised heads: This is by far the best feature of… Read more

this vacuum, period! These two heads clean carpet/rug and hard floor seamlessly, this is great if you have both hard floor and carpet at home (and you do not need to change your vacuum heads unlike most other vacuums out there - Dyson in particular). These heads are absolutely powerful and easy to operate, they have plenty of power agitating the dirt out of medium-piled (or thinner) carpet while not sucking to the carpet so tight that you could not move it.

2. Great for pet hair: The two motorised heads do not get stuck by pet/human hair, and this is great for households with pets or long hair. [It was a disaster to clean the hair out of one of my Dyson's a long time ago].

3. LED headlights: Bright enough to illuminate the areas & dirt in front of the vacuum, and this was greatly helpful to spot any dirt or missed areas under a couch, cabinet or bed from my experience.

4. HEPA filter and sealed unit: This is great for people with allergies or asthma [my experiences so far have proven this claim, my hay fever was not triggered by this vacuum unlike many others - Kogan...].

5. The flexible/bendable wand: I have been looking for similar features for a long time, great job to Shark for incorporating this design. You can easily bend the wand to reach under benches, couches and beds; I no longer had to crawl on the floor to reach those areas.

6. Long power cable & easy storage: This is not your typical stick vacuum with awfully short cable, it has plenty! And you can fold the vacuum in half making it much easier to store away.

7. Quiet operations: Unlike many other vacuums (stick vac in particular), this Shark HZ390 is much quieter to operate with a less powerful motor, saving electricity too.

The Cons: 1. It needs to be plugged-in: This is a very small* unit, and yet, it still needs to be plugged-in. Considering how well & cheap Dyson or even those knock-offs have been, I find this Shark unit a bit strange and unattractive to many potential buyers.

2. The ergonomics: It might just be me nick-picking this unit, but coming from multiple stick vacuums from Dyson, I find this Shark unit unergonomic to hold at hands. The weight of the motor and dust bin was not well balanced and can cause your hand/wrist fatigue over a moderate period of time.

3. Low suction power: Don't get me wrong, this vacuum's brush heads are some of the best in the category, but its suction isn't. With a small unit of only 450 W, majority of the cleaning actions were done by the motorised heads, not by the suction of the unit. As such, if you have thick medium or higher piled carpet/rug, this unit will not suit you well.

4. Dust bin emptying mechanism: Similar to many other stick vacs on the market, this unit has one button release mechanism. However, if the dust contains some fibre or hair, it will not drop down on its own, and you will have to get it out by hand (not the best part of cleaning). This is similar to many other vacuum sticks on the market, but some do perform better in this regard.

5. A bit pricey: At $399, I find it hard to justify this purchase, especially with many other cordless options available on the market. If this was $300 or lower, this will be a great buy!

Powerful but there's a trade off – This is probably the most powerful stick vac I've ever used, however it's also the only wired stick vac I've ever used. The vacuum was a (initially) a pleasure to use on both hard wood floors and short length carpet. It has exceptional suction for a stick vac and pulled up a lot of dust even after we went over a patch of carpet with a Dyson V6… Read more

stick vac.

I took everything out of the box and put it all together. Comes with three main parts and the 2 attachments (upholstery brush and crevice tool). The three main pieces click together very easily and securely, whereas the attachments don't click, you just push them in and they stay there using friction. I picked up the assembled vacuum, plugged it in and turned it on. To my surprise, it's actually pretty quiet for a mains powered vacuum, even at the highest suction setting.

Using the vac is very easy. The head just glides over hardwood floors, and short pile carpet. You can hear that satisfying sound of the particles going up the cylinder into the dust bin. With a 10 meter long cable, I plugged it in at a point in my living room and I could reach most of my apartment (yes, I live in a relatively small apartment). But as with most corded vacs, the cable gets in the way sometimes and you need to move it all the time, or hang it over your shoulder.

While using the vac, it was clear that this was picking up a lot of debris that other cordless vacs would normally miss. The brushes were doing their job and agitating the carpet to get more out of it. Plus, the arm bends so you can get it under beds or furniture however it's quite hard to manoeuvre when in this state. After a while though I found that the weight of the motor end of the vac was getting a bit much for my arm. Since the whole vac is into the top end, it's fair to say that it's going to eventually be a strain for your arm as compared to a traditional vac where the motor is on the floor.

Once done vacuuming one bedroom, there was an incredible amount of dust in the dust bin. The dust bin easily detaches and is easily emptied. You are able to detach the dust bin without opening it making for easier transport to the bin without having to take the whole vacuum. Checked the brush head - No hair! Shark advertise that the head has a comb which stops the hair from wrapping around the brush, and it holds true! My partner seems to leave hair all over the place which ends up in the brushes of our robo vac, but using this, I couldn't find a single hair left in the head. Kudos to Shark on this!

Once finished the cable can be wrapped up onto the built in cable minder (the top of which rotates so it's easy to unravel the cable when you want to use it again), and the vac can fold in half to make it more compact for storage. A convenient handle is in place to carry it around too.

Some things I also noticed: 1. 'Headlights' on the front in case you want to vacuum in the dark! But I think they are more so you can as the dust on the floor. 2. Green light on the top of the head which indicates whether the brushes are spinning or not. 3. Vacuum will not stand up by itself meaning you'll have to lean it against something or lie it down if you need to let it go for any reason. 4. When you put the vacuum in a fully upright position the head locks on place so when you go to vacuum again you need to kick it down. 5. When you put the vacuum in a fully upright position the brush heads stop spinning until you kick the head down again. 6. The head can be disassembled for cleaning. 7. Build quality was good, but not excellent. Felt sturdy, but didn't have that 'premium' feel. 8. Great at getting into corners. Seems to pick up (most) debris that is against the wall without you having to pull it out first. 9. Has three power setting levels, which I guess you can change depending on the surface you're vacuuming, but I just used it on the highest setting for everything as I don't have to worry about a battery going flat. 10. If you lift the vacuum head off the floor while it's running, it'll make a horrible noise, but goes away when you place it back on the floor.

Overall this is a great stick vac, especially for the price. Powerful, easy to use, easy to clean. However the cable does get in the way sometimes, and it can strain your arm after long periods of use.

Great suction of any vacuum cleaner I have owned – The first thing I loved was the 10-metre length of the cord. I found it easy enough to put together. Read the directions and did find a couple of actions that could be better explained with larger font. With the “Quick Start Guide” under “placing the foot gently on the head of the vacuum”, there is also I grey lever which you think you would… Read more

push to release the head, no, that releases the wand. There is a very small diagram of a foot on the head but it is hard to see without glasses. That I think could be improved. On trying the vacuum, I did find the handle and motor heavy in my hand. I suffer from arthritis and this makes simple tasks harder. This, however, did not stop me. I was surprised to see the dust canister nearly full after doing my bedroom. The reason I was surprised, the bedroom had only been vacuumed a week before with a barrel-style cleaner. The carpet even felt softer underfoot and it's a very old carpet. The head moves well and swivels very easily into corners and along skirting. The next time, I cleaned half the carpet in my lounge room with another popular stick cleaner and received about a ¼ of dust in the canister, then I did the same area with the Shark. Again, I received about the same amount of dust as the popular stick cleaner. Not really surprised as the Shark has one of the best suctions of any vacuum cleaners I have owned or used before. The second feature is being able to release the wand at the halfway point and be able to vacuum under tight places, eg. beds, lounge suites, and chairs. A bonus! Another feature I love is the on/off switch which is not made of plastic like other popular stick cleaners and you don’t have to leave your finger on it to proceed with cleaning. The switch has two cleaning selections. Topline is carpet, the second level relates to hard floors and the third is on/off. Very easy to use. On emptying the Dust Cup, I lost the release button and spring into the trash as well. After retrieving both, it took some time for me to put them back together. Older people would struggle with this and I think it could be improved. After fixing this I found out not to press too hard to release the bottom of the dust cup. After many uses of the Shark vacuum cleaner over the carpet and tiled floors, I would recommend it to most people. The only reservations I have is the weight of the head in your hand, this could be a problem for people with health problems. I love it so much, however; I will do one or two rooms at a time and have a rest. Another feature, although it’s a corded machine, you can do everything in one go and don’t have to stop and recharge the unit, which gets very tiresome. The pros: long cord, easy to use on/off switch, the best suction I have found in a vacuum cleaner of any design. I haven’t owned it a month yet so haven’t cleaned the filters, but looks straightforward. The cons: the motor is heavy in your hand, try in store before you buy, but give it a good try as you might be doing the machine and yourself an injustice if you don’t. The release button for the dust cup needs improving.

Probably the most perfect Vacuum Cleaner – From the moment the Shark HZ390 was unboxed to initially testing the vacuum cleaner, I couldn’t help by being surprised how well it is engineered and how thoughtful the design is. At first, I found the cable a little daunting being so used to a cordless stick vacuum cleaner. It’s not until you start to clean with the HZ390 that you realise how… Read more

more powerful it is than even the best stick cleaners. The noise level is softer compared to other brands I’ve experienced too. The dust cup although a little small is very easy to empty and dismantle for cleaning. With the 10M cord, the cleaner easily covers a large area in one go. The LED Headlights are a very nice touch which to me, are very reminiscent of the original upright vacuum cleaners from the 50s, just brighter with modern LED technology. I can easily see that if you’re using the HZ390 in a location where there’s lots of hair, the self cleaning brush roll will make hair removal a breeze. I’ve found that the cleaner works very well on hard floors and carpet too and all that is required to switch modes is the flick of the switch near the handle. It was also a delight to discover that the main tube articulates so that the HZ390 becomes very compact for storage. This is a really neat trick! Nice to see a two year manufacturers warranty is included. I can’t really fault the HZ390 in any way.

Awsome, really – Ok, being a stick vacuum user over many different models and brands I was very surprised with this stick vacuum. other brand stick vac, then go over rugs again with this shark. Well I'm blown away at the amount of dirt and dust that was removed by the shark, really it is almost unbelievable. Half the dust tank was full again after already vacuum with other brand. And the particles were a lot finer that the shark managed to pick up, now I feel my carpets are really truly clean. Horrified at how I thought they were clean before, but in fact the carpet was still full of dust . Shark cleaning capabilities of this unit have won me over. The steering is very very good and combined with the ability to go up against walls and corners is really good. It's obviously a well thought out design with the dust cup and filters being readily and easily removed and emptied. Basically just 1 click achieves everything. Long cord is very welcome easily reach all of my unit in 1 power point thanks to the 10meter cord. The quietness of the shark in operation was a pleasant surprise, so quiet yet so powerful. It has a folding wand to let you access under things, very useful and more importantly it is easy to engage this feature, once again a 1 click operation. I use a stick vacuum floor stand for it, however it is not really needed as the shark folds for sturdy storage if desired. Washable filters a major point score also. The ease of accessibility to remove filters for cleaning is very well designed. My list of cons, the cord, however seeing as shark put a 10 meter cord then its not that big of an issue. It's not a vacuum to pull out for quick spills however, you can of course but it's a little more involved when using Corded model. My list of pro's, the biggest pro for me is the actual cleaning power and dust and dirt removal qualities, for a real true deep clean, this unit delivers in spades. Hard floors also come up beautifully because of the 2 types of roller in floor head. The steering is also a plus. Ability to get up against walls and corners out performs other brands that I've had. Ease of cleaning filters and dust cup. The quietness of operation is a wonderful addition. Overall this model is very very good at achieving a deep clean of carpets, and a polished effect to hard floors. Very pleasantly surprised at just how effective this unit really is, my home I thought had clean floors, shark proved me wrong, now they are really clean , wonderful vacuum cleaner.

Nobody likes vacuuming, but this may change your mind – It's easy to write reviews, and pick out good and bad aspects of any machine, but it's much more objective to write about direct comparisons. Vacuuming, the household chore no one really likes. You need to do a decent job too, otherwise you're just shifting the dirt around. important), performs on different surfaces, can be used as a hand held for your car, easy to use, and easy to store. I have now, 5 vacuum cleaners. A Miele compact barrel ($279), a H2O Vac ($399), Kogan T5 corded stick vac ($39), Dyson V7 ($399), and my new Shark HZ390 ($399). All have pros and cons except the H2O Vac which has no redeeming features at all, and scores zero out of 5. The Miele is you conventional barrel type vacuum, with a hose, wand, and attachments. This was the standard maybe 20 years ago, and still many people will swear by them. Replacement dust bags have dropped somewhat in price nowadays. This still works very well, but is hampered by the cord, (though it is retractable). Storage is fiddly with the hose and wand and attachments. 3.5 out of 5. The Kogan T5 is an entry level stick vac, and was great for above ground work, as it's very light and compact and doesn't need bags. Easily stored. The 450w motor though, was a little disappointing and lacked real cleaning power despite being corded. 2 out of 5. My Dyson V7, however was a revelation in cleaning. Even after using the Miele and Kogan, the Dyson managed to fill the dust container twice over. This was a testament to the cleaning efficiency of this very well designed vacuum. Cordless design with 20min of power on normal, and 12 min on "turbo". Not too heavy, very easy to use. 4.5 out of 5. Now we come to my Shark HZ390. Immediately you know, "this is not a toy", but a serious piece of kit. Remember what I said about the Dyson cleaning after the Miele? This Shark does this again, this time after the Dyson! The Shark removed dust and dirt from what I thought was a thoroughly cleaned carpet. I'm amazed! There are special features like the bendable wand which allows you to clean under furniture without stooping, and headlights for dark corners, but the best feature I think, is the Duo-Clean head. This is a powered roller brush which aids in extra deep cleaning of your carpet and rugs, and it works a treat. This is not a light machine, certainly heavier than both the Dyson and Kogan, but it compensates by having a second handle at the base of the wand so it's quite easy and comfortable to use. Again, this is a bag less system, and has washable filters. It features a system that reduces the amount of long hair that wraps around the roller brush.....this works great, however, I then found that long hair wraps around the steel primary filter in the canister section, though it was easy to pull out. The shark does those other things that the Dyson cannot. It can clean all day without recharging, it has greater than Dyson cleaning power, and certainly leaves the Miele and Kogan in their own dust. It's also quiet compared to my Miele. The cons are; 1- it's corded (but the cord is long at 10m), I only have to swap twice to clean the whole 4 bed house. 2 - it's a sizeable stick vac, and due to it's weight, is a littler harder to stow away. Overall 4 out of 5 I still don't like vacuuming, but now I know I'm doing a good job!
