PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ THIS - DO NOT BUY As a beginner sewist, I thought I was simply using this machine incorrectly. I have had experience with a singer heavy duty machine in a previous sewing class I had a few years ago. But aside that I am a complete beginner who just wanted to get back into it on a budget a few years later. I had to go… Read more
to my local sewing shop 6 separate times within less than a month just for them to unjam the machine. They suggested many different methods to prevent jams from occurring. Such as turning the dial towards your self, not messing with the tension, having the needle in the fabric before pressing the pedal AND using high quality thread.
I had done ALL of these things and more! But it still jammed! It had fully jammed about 7 times within a few weeks of actually using it.
Additionally 2 or 3 needles were broken!! All within less than a month!!
The singer heavy duty sewing machine functioned better with less knowledge. And now with MORE sewing knowledge the singer start 1306 decides to function WORSE. This leads me to believe that its a lack of quality not knowledge.
Reading other peoples experiences (who are more knowledgeable) with this machine make sense because these machines are likely to not made to be manufactured/quality controlled properly. Due to them being one of the cheapest machines you can buy on the market.
People spend hard earned money on these machines. I would expect that it simply functions.
Please do not buy, spend your money elsewhere and save yourself the headache!!
This machine has a defect. It doesn’t function as intended. I barely managed to complete one garment last year. I thought I was using it wrong. Tried again this month. Cotton keeps breaking and the bobbin keeps coming loose. I have followed the trouble shoots and nothing works. I’ve had to rethread it about 50 times to do one outfit. This… Read more
doesn’t even serve a child as a toy. Very frustrating. It has taken the pleasure away from sewing and I can’t finish the costumes I’m making for the grand children. I’ve been sewing for many years on my mother’s old Singer.
AVOID – One of the worst products I've ever experienced. I have watched tens of different troubleshooting videos, have threaded and re-threaded multiple times, but it continues to break needles or just simply not work. Truly the worst. Do not buy. Show details
Very sorry the Singer Start does not live up to the Singer name – I have used a sewing machine for 40 years so I don't feel I am a novice in handling a sewing machine, however, this machine is such a disappointment. I only do small sewing repairs/jobs for our house, and I have already had to replace one needle. But the thread not feeding properly through the bobbin trace has been my main issue - the cause of the first broken needle, and with continual jamming, a very frustrating experience. Show details
Not good – I was very disappointed with the machine. It was a gift. . I've Singer swings all my life.I broke a dozen needles. I would nothing but take it out the box threaded it and started to sew. Show details
Needls keep breaking – Every time i try to sew the needles keep breaking, so disapointed. Purchased the machine for my grandaughter to learn on but we are unable to use it as we can even get throug a small hem without having to change the broken needle. Show details

I like my new 1306 singer machine – This machine is new and have not used it yet but from my experience from my old singer I saw blouses in different sizes and designs for income and I am so glad to have the new one Show details
Not great for beginners, or anyone for that matter – Needle kept getting jammed, snapped two needles couldn't do anything with it. Didn't even make it through to the finish of one hem line. Completely stuck, can't even lift the needle manually. Show details
lost its " singing" voice – being new to all sewing,I did not want to spend $$ on a machine to learn. bought this and stored for a year while finding my feet with hand sewing. now machine is out and the thread does one run ,then breaks at the needle. been on You Tube and watched and followed tutorial but still to no avail. I have also found that when getting to end, the… Read more
thread does not come out easily to cut off.seems to get stuck inside where the bobbin is. and at times the thread comes out coated in some dark stain.I am thinking that some people should not attempt to learn certain things.I had more success and less stress learning to sew by hand.and I got more done. I am so down hearted.
Broken 15 needles so far! – I bought a Singer Start from Spotlight in Adelaide. The amount of needles I went through! I was forever adjusting thinking it must have been my fault, then I reviewed the machine and lo and behold! same problem as everyone else.... Show details

Consumer rights – Anyone getting a dodgy product can indeed return it to THE PLACE OF PURCHASE, don't be put off by staff!! Consumer law says you can if it does not work or perform as it ought etc. I had to fight Spotlight years ago over 2 rubbish Brother sewing machines my girls bought, they fought tooth and nail until I mentioned Consumer affairs, then they… Read more
couldn't process the refunds fast enough!! Know your rights, and don't be afraid to (politely) fight if need be.
Not great, kept breaking – I was given this sewing machine, and it was good in the beginning. It was basic, sewed okay and did what it had to do. However, after a while of use, the inside of it completely broke and fell apart, and the thread kept bunching up inside, meaning I constantly had to readjust it to stop it from doing that. The needle was close to snapping many times as well as being bent easily. Overall, not the best in the world, I do not recommend it. Show details
Good Basic Machine – Good basic sewing machine, only downfall I didn’t like before I bought the machine was the bobbin casing, but the rest is all good I find it a positive as it’s lightweight to carry anywhere, perfect machine for a good cheap price for sewing and mending Show details
Singer start 1306 sewing machine – This machine is rubbush needle keeps braking and moves tried to take it back to spotlight they saud no refunds or exchanging so now stuck with a machine that i can not use so dissappointimg Show details
You get what you pay for – I was gifted one of these machines a few weeks ago. I set up everything as per instructional DVD. I had the machine for a week and still wasn't able to sew a pillow case, with light fabric. The top needle kept unthreading every two centimetres and material bunching up and snapped a needle due to the vibration. It doesn't feel sturdy and reliable… Read more
so i had to take it back to spotlight a week after getting it for them to see what the deal was. I haven't used it again yet. But i think if i could go back i would have spent the extra $100 to buy a forever machine because i dont think this is it.
Great basic sewing machine – Had a Globe for about 40 years, with a front loading bobbin. Bought a Toyota with a top loading bobbin which is hard to clean out if thread gets jammed in it and after 3 years tension needs fixing at a cost of $180! I like this Singer because it has a front loading bobbin, easy to turn needle screw, a power on off switch, runs quietly and has a carry handle.
