Not made to last beyond the warranty period, extremely expensive to repair – Needed to have a look at a problem with my dear Mother-in-law's smeg rangehood. Both lamps have now failed just after 5 year warranty expired. P791 replacement LED lamp(s) required and found: $145AUD each? For something other manufacturers usually sell at $25-35. 68mm 700mA 2.1W LED @ 3K colour temp. This should be a simple user maintainable part and task, it is an LED lamp and very far from an integrated circuit or entire PCB. Show details

Fan suddenly stopped. Poor quality – Have had this integrated range hood for approximately 7 years. The fan has totally stopped working although the unit has not been heavily used. (All other functions still working). Make sure you read last paragraph. Contacted and personally visited SMEG retailer in NZ - Kitchen Things, Hamilton. Felt they offered replacement as my only… Read more

reasonable option. (EXCLUDING SMEG, other brand likely a couple of thousand dollars installed)

With pushing I found out it is possible to have faulty unit checked, but at potentially large cost and unknown outcome. No-one is offering expert advice, although internet reviews showing this model has the same issue as a common issue. (Compressor, motor?), cost for repair quoted as; A house callout fee $135.75 including first 20 minute, if the time exceeds than its $19.75 for every 10 minutes ($118.50 per hour). Then Additional for parts-if needed. And If the technician assesses the appliance and does not have the parts in his van stock, a Return visit fee of $48.75 will also be applied And Electrical safety certificate $19.75 applies.

I don’t believe 6 years is a reasonable ‘expected life’ of what used to be a quality product.

Smeg (in particular NZ - The Jones Family business group/Kitchen Things] I believe are not good at supporting their products.

Will not use or recommend SMEG products.

Finally found a technician, who came to fix another issue, who confirmed it was a simple replacement of a part (as I’d seen online overseas being done). It took 10 minutes, cost next to nothing and is still going in 2024.

Died - is 7 years old – Have had this for approximately 7 years. The fan has totally stopped working (lights still functioning). Contacted Smeg, they indicated replacement motor has a cost of $420. Labour cost on top $125 for the first 15 minutes and then $30 per 15 minutes thereafter. Realise that it is of a certain age, but this is very expensive when a similar model… Read more

can bought new for $600. Smeg obviously not good at supporting their products. Will look for another brand to replace. When it was working, the fan operating is very noisy, much more than we would have expected.

Terrific Now – An update on this is that I have had my rangehood repaired by Electrogas who is the Smeg local repairer. It now seems to work better than it did when it was originally installed when we renovated our kitchen. Very happy with the repair and the repairer did a great job and was very helpful.Thanks. This rangehood was purchased with a number of other… Read more ·  1

Smeg appliances for our new kitchen. It was not used everyday however it has stopped working. The lights are still working. Had the Smeg repairer out who believed that it was most likely the capacitor as fault as this it apparently common. No this didn't fix it. Now it could be the motor or the circuit board??. $143 down the drain!!( wasn't charged for the capacitor) After buying Smeg believing they were superior products I am very disappointed. This will cost a fortune by the time I am done and to buy a replacement nobody has stock until maybe May. The exclusive retailer wants full upfront payment to order one. Very frustrating and upsetting. I have to buy another Smeg equivalent to fit where the old one is. Help!!

Good product – 4 years of minimal domestic use after purchase motor fails, a month later lights fail. Booked a service call and on top of the $120 call out fee from the company smeg used to do the service I was quoted $128 for each of the 2 lights and $728 for the motor (parts only) making the repair over $1000 once you pay the service fee. A replacement unit… Read more ·  2

can be purchased for much less. I expected a much more serviceable product from what I believed was a quality brand.

Edit: The day I wrote this review, as smeg service rep contacted me directly. They offered to supply the parts for the repair free of charge. I could not ask for a better outcome then that. A week later the range hood was fully operational. I have updated to 4 stars as the unit when operational is quite good, and once the service was sorted out it was all very professionally handled by both smeg and their repair agents.

Low domestic use high repair costs too late – Lights stopped working after 4 years of minimal domestic use.Cost of call out and to replace transformer and lights $1000.00. Cost of product and installation around $1000. Had we known the high cost of parts and servicing, we would have replaced this one with a new rangehood from another company. This product has been discontinued and leaves the… Read more

purchaser with an expensive dud. For an alleged reputable brand this leaves us with nothing positive to say about SMEG products ,

2nd Product of Smeg kitchen package to fail – Purchased a kitchen package of smeg appliances in 2016. Rangehood has had intermittent problems with the controls over the last month and finally the motor shorted out on Thursday (13/6/19). The dishwasher also shorted out about a year ago and it took over a month to get it fixed as the service technican didnt bring all the parts with him. Disappointed with Smeg appliances and could not recommend them Show details

Ongoing problems – Purchased P591 in 2013 for house renovation.Has always been more noisy than we were told and have had failures with light transformers. Very expensive to replace. Unit seems to have problems with switches at times and now it has started making squealing noises and eventually wont work on low speed and just turns on high. I have become very… Read more

frustrated as we live in the country and no one will come out and will cost $$$ to make this happen. I eventually pulled it apart myself and found the motor only has bronze bushes not ball bearings!!. One bush on fan end has worn the shaft badly and allows the fan to wobble and seize. It is in bits in a box today. Very disappointed with quality of motor. Where to from here ?

We were told Smeg had improved their build quality, quite the opposite – We have experienced exactly the same problem with our 591SS Classic. 3.5 yrs and motor is dead as a door nail. Lights/buttons seem to work, no extraction. Called the service centre, very reluctant to spend $120 for someone from Smeg to come out to tell me the motor will cost $220 and I'll end up spending close to the replacement value of the unit!… Read more

Not happy since I was hesitant buying Smeg appliances after previous issues with a dishwasher in a former house, but the sales person convinced us they had lifted their game. Damn shame as it was a good range hood when it worked.

It would be good if Smeg would stand up for their products beyond a 2 year warranty period. Certainly put off this brand now! Just hoping our dishwasher and stove don't fail also!

Smeg...... noisy lemon – When it came to the rangehood in our new forever kitchen we decided on spending dollars on quality. The salesperson was so helpful and kind to walk us through all the pros and cons of all the appliances we needed for a complete re-fit for our forever home kitchen, we were confined to the size we could install because of the room we had with the… Read more

cupboard layout over the stove. We finally settled on a Smeg oven, Smeg induction stove, Smeg microwave and Smeg rangehood.

So far all good with all the appliances except the $566.00 rangehood. What a Lemon, noisey, inefficient piece of metal. If this is the quality we are to expect from Smeg forget it.

To top it all off 2years and 5 weeks ( out of warranty ) after purchase the motor blows, cost of repair $446.00 just to buy the motor let alone the cost of labour to fit it to the range hood. Never again will we buy an expensive piece of junk. I sourced the exact same size, different brand, 52cm undermount rangehood from a local appliance store and guess what it is quieter, more powerful and cheaper only $134.00 with a 2 year warranty. Now the old Smeg is sitting in the garage gathering dust, a costly reminder of our Smeg purchases.
