Good value for a small camera – Sony Cybershot DSC W- 830 Work has provided us thes, they are a big improvement over the inexpensive Canon we used to have. The controls are straightforward. The resolution settings are a bit limited. That said the photographic quality is quite good. Zeiss lens, what else can I say. Optical zoom is a requirement, and this one is easy to… Read more

operate.

The power button is a bit too small for normal man sized hands.

The video has good clarity. The control switch is easily changed from photo to video mode.

Panoramic mode has not been tested.

The auto functions are all decent. It's not an SLR so for most users that is suitable.

The LCD screen gives you a really good display and reviewing photos is easy.

Easy recharging with included AC adapter but it's nearly as fast charging via USB plug in the computer.

I would buy one myself. Good product.

Disappointing – I bought this to replace a Nikon S3000 12 megapixel compact which had an electronic failure in the focusing. The Nikon gave very good quality shots with very fine detail when enlarged, good colour saturation and a wide range of adjustable options in the menus. I bought it on a runout for around $100 so when it failed I went looking for a similar… Read more

replacement. The new equivalent Nikon was a bit over $200 and the Sony was $159 and as I don't use the compacts very often I decided to go with the cheaper Sony.

A big mistake as it turned out as the quality of the photos from this camera is truly appalling for a 20.1 megapixel camera. The fine details are on par with my 10 year old 5 megapixel Olympus C5050 and even less than the camera in my old iPhone 4 - I spent about 5 hours taking various shots of the same subjects with several of my digital cameras and compared them at 5x resolution in GraphicConverter after reviewing the first "field" results with the Sony. In Auto or Programmed Landscape mode the shots are very overexposed, not particularly sharp and the photos frequently have a slight blue haze spot if there is any sunlight obliquely on the lens. The different modes have varying and quite odd restrictions is areas such as selecting an autofocussing point, having the flash enabled or disabled, setting ISO etc, and the lack of these means most of the modes are effectively useless for decent quality output. I know it is a cheap camera, but 20 megapixels is still high resolution and the results should be a lot better than they are.

I was also mildly annoyed to discover that this camera was actually discontinued some time ago and yet is still on sale at the full price. I've been using digital cameras since the first Casios hit the market around 1990 and own and regularly use an Olympus, Nikon and a Pentax DSLR as well as the camera in my iPhone 6S so I am used to varying degrees of quality in photos I take. The Sony is far below the picture quality of the Nikon S3000, a camera with almost half its resolution.

I use the compacts where using the camera phone is either inconvenient or there is a chance of dropping it or getting it wet and losing a $150 camera is better than a $1200 phone. If you are in the same situation, look at other cheapies and give this one a miss.
