I bought my Musso as a tow vehicle to get around with my horse. Now I will preface this by saying that I think if I had used this car solely as a tow vehicle it would not have gotten me anywhere particularly fast but it would've done the job and for a cheap tow vehicle that's fine! I have the RWD Sports version. The electrics are terrible,… Read more

within the first two months of owning this vehicle the fuel gage stopped working and it doesn't tell you when your lights are on, these two things lead to MANY vehicle break downs. I have used every single one of my RACT call outs every year I've owned this car. I had to replace SO many things, the steering wheel pump, clutch (2x in two years), alternator, relay timer etc. And unfortunately you can't find these parts anymore so have to but aftermarket, my mechanics got sick of me and basically didn't work to work on it anymore and I had to find all the parts myself... This car was been drama and it's only got 170,000 on the clock which in Australia where I come from is considered low ks. OH and the hand brake is the size of a Ford falcon's meaning hill starts with a horse float is basically impossible!

That being said if I'd only used it as a tow vehicle or eleven better only used it to cart around stuff in the tray, it would've served it purpose.

Bang for your buck – I've had my Musso sports 2006 for a couple of years now and I have put it on the same bush tracks as I've driven in my old Navara,,, but I'm not having to rest every 2nd HR due to the ride (Model T suspension kit),, I've got a few modifications that improve the ute with a ARB steel bar (modified 2003RA Rodeo)and , custom bash plate, 2in heavy duty… Read more

suspension kit (Ironman),, 32x11.5R15 mud tyres,,, maxxtrax install on the tailgate. I'm getting a snorkel and diff lockers and diff breather kit and my plan is to get more power and a winch installed,, I challenge anybody to find a 4x4 ute with under 100000km, air bag, C/locking, coil rear springs, too much cabin room, for $5,500, spare parts are easy to find if you know how to look, My only complaint about this ute is the cup holders, why put them in if it won't hold can of coke

Very average ute – Bought it 7 months ago with all view to having it short term until I could manage to scrape together enough money for a better vehicle. Primarily purchased it due to the Mercedes connection. Parts....my god, parts are a problem. If you're lucky enough to find a wrecker that stocks Ssangyong parts, at least you can get back to work. But prepare to… Read more

be slugged an absolute motza for the luxury. Driving is hairy as 100k plus, it's quite unstable, every now and then I could hear the roof flex with that wobbling metal sound. So I imagine that the structure of the cabin is pretty flimsy and probably without supports. Poor pulling power, just ordinary all over. To top it off, with 235k on the clock my timing chain went and broke the cam into 4 pieces and totalled everything'sng else when traveling at only around 20km/h. So it's off to the gold coast wreckers now. For anyone out there that needs parts, feel free to call them. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you. Overall, I sure got to use it short term. A very costly exercise that I regret going ahead with. A massive mistake. A real piece of junk.

Most Under rated car on the Market – I have purchased a 2nd Musso , 2006 4x4 fully optioned, canopy, cruise control, tow bar, fog lights, larger fuel tank, alarm ( not really needed) car comes with immobiliser. Fully integrated pioneer sound system, have a good mechanic and a source for parts. The ABS light issue is a computer logic error No. 41. needs to have diagnostic probes… Read more

input into the car and this clears the error message.

Min problem is that car locking system gets a signal to lock the vehicle when the engine is running and keys in the ignition..

Cars market value is extremely low, thus this means you can go and buy another one if parts become an issue. Not an issues in Australia. SsangYong dealers are not that helpful. Best to find a good mechanic who can source parts world wide. I sometimes have to wait 2-3 months, but this is rare as car runs well all the time and no real parts issues at this point in time.

If car is serviced every 5000km then it will run forever.

currently 2007 model is at 240,000km and the 2nd car (just purchased) has 117,000 km. Both vehicles run the same and appear to have same minor issues which are tolerable.

Barring vehicle collision or theft the car will outlive me. Currently both vehicles do 20,000 km per annum.

I have never had to do a wheel alignment on the vehicle until I put a new set of tyres on every 5 years.

I never put air in tyres the whole time. This is done during 5ooo km service.

Car constantly does 10litres /100 km for their whole running time.

Breaks last 140,000 country driving

Given the price of its competitors and class of vehicle this is definitely worth a look.

usual due diligence checks needed when purchasing car, to see if previous owner servicing vehicle properly, but that applies to all vehicles one would purchase.

Really Love My Musso Sports Ute – Hi I was looking for a cheap DualCab ute to replace my Hilux and after some research I thought I would get a good quality ute at an undervalued price with a Ssangyong Musso. I do quite a bit of mechanical work so I wasn't shy when I found a one owner that had a problem clutch/flywheel at a bargain price. I took it home shopped for a clutch and new… Read more

flywheel as the dual mass flywheel had separated and making a horrible racket. Price was about $900 on ebay so shopped a bit more and found a secondhand engine with good clutch pressure plate and a solid flywheel for $300 (so now I have a spare motor as well). Dropped out the gearbox. (Heavy job). Changed the flywheel clutch and pressure plate over. Now it runs beautifully. I am really impressed with the ride, build quality and fuel economy etc of this vehicle. It has heaps of space. Everything functions well. I couldn't resist dressing it up with a set of Nissan Patrol mags. A Landcruiser polished Ali Tie on roll bar. Nudge bar Landcruiser sheepskins etc. So now it not only is a very good vehicle it looks the part as well! I like its looks far more than the next model Actyon sports ute although they got better looking with the 2013 model

What a wonderful surprise – My old car gave up the ghost in Carnarvon, WA. I was towing an 18' Caravan, fully loaded. Not an ok car for Ecuador! – Perhaps it is an Ok car , but in Ecuador it became a disaster, no parts , no experienced mechanics... Now I urgently need a parts manual for the motor, and there is absolutely no place where to buy one, also in most of the case sI need to do repairing with adapted parts and finally it became impossible to sell, as it has an extremely low cost in the market.  Show details

it was a good price for 4x4.Comfortable ride, seats 4-5 people well.Economy alright for this size of car.I believe engine and drivetrain is of good quality. A bit wobbly on the tarmac but good on gravel roads. Not the best looking car but you get used to it.Brake discs were worn out when I bought it at 36K Km.One morning the battery was dead, one of the door buttons for interior lights and the lights on the door panels got stuck and door panel lights drained the battery overnight.I have been warned about electrical problems, for instance be careful not to leave the key in the car, the central locking might decide to lock the car on its own. I try to take the key with me every time or at least leave a window open just in case..Could use a few more hp.Paint and bodywork, already showing rust.

quiet inside compared to our old Hilux. I have owned the Actyon Sports and it was very good all round traded on a SPR Rexton. The Musso is a bit "Old School" but off road feels more sure of itself. The Typical Ssangyong problems- The stereo craps out after a while, easy to change out but you have to modify the front speaker shrouds.

Yes the re-sale on Ssangyongs is very poor. I paid $6,700 for my Musso, I looked at the Nissan Ute with 330Ks on the clock it sold for $18K. (It was a crap heap).

But hey I paid $16k for the top of the range SPR Rexton with 110k on the clock in very good order, the new price with tow package was $51k. But some one has to buy them new!!

Ssangyongs are very easy to service yourself, buy parts off Ebay as dealers are a rip off. The old Merc 2.9 engine is easy to work on, the borg warner gear boxes are easy to service. But you must research the correct oils as most mechanics just put in what they have. If you need a clutch find out which clutch you have, you will need your Vehicle Identification Number (Vin) as the Musso has 2 different clutches.

In Western Australia the dealers have been keen to sell new Ssangyong's but do not want to trade your old one in. When I tried to trade in my first Rexton on another Rexton Barbagallo's told me to sell it privately!

As a family we have had 2 Rextons, 2 Kyrons, 1 Actyon Sports and now a Musso Sports.

Buy a Ssangyong second hand and drive it into the ground. It might take some time tho. Cheers!

A Musso most amazing! – I bought my 2004 Musso Sports 2.9l turbo Diesel Manual Sports 18 months ago with 160,000 klms on the clock secondhand to pull a small caravan...Had no idea that it would totally surpass all of my expectations in such a short time!!! looking at Landcruisers and Pajeros... all much older and with 300,000 klms plus for similar money...budget was around $6K.).. my Musso was fully appointed and accessorized , beautifully built, simple and straight forward to service for those who want to DIY maintenance, very spacious and comfortable, and great on fuel to boot! For a "Woolies McBenz" as someone else dubbed it here on Product review I have to agree..this vehicle is so totally underrated and is a totally hidden gem for those lucky to know them... Points for....cheap and easy to fix,.....getting parts for totally easy!(unfortunate history equals plus plus!!!.... Musso was was a lovechild for many marques (it's a very unique vehicle in this respect!!)...Mercedes/Daewoo/GMH/Ssangyong...so great parts support!...even better still on-line and cheap too!!!)Same as MB140/Sprinter mechanically so very common!...strong and powerful (though not overly quick!) Mercedes tech and engineering... Cheap on fuel...nothing else this size gets 9l/100 klms ! Reliable! Well engineered and put together...doesn't rust! Ride!...soft.smooth and controlled! (almost French!)(most Jap 4WDs ride firm as!)...Musso is luxurious and yet well controlled...feels safe,,,easy to work on and with lots of on-line DIY support (lots were sold to non 1st world markets where bush servicing and mods are the standard.... Pros...Not quick acceleration wise! Limited 4wd ability...not a huge ground clearance as standard without mods..(but plenty of grunt!)..very poor resale (bonus for me...will NEVER sell this gem! Not loved for it's looks..( I actually really like it's shape, but then I own Citroen s too..Ssangyong here in Perth is sold through the same dealer...lots of Ssangyong owners here in W.A also own Citroen! (go figure!!) Not the best for towing a caravan (I make this comment tongue in cheek since there are many times I FORGOT I was towing the van!!! ,,,,poor van! Nearly had it all messed up a few times! Lol!) Conclusion! I love this beast! Sad that they stopped making them! The Ssangyong Musso Sports Ute and Musso SUV would have to be the most underrated, unknown and unloved 4wd ever to grace our planet! Lucky for me! I have one!

A Hidden Gem in the Auto World – Bought ours new in 05 We have been right around Australia towing a light caravan (did 30.000 Klm that trip) after that we took it and punished it up the Old Telegraph Track to the top, it went where all the so called "big boys" went with ease. It is looked after well (by me, a retired deisel engineer) with an opened out exhaust, street legal,… Read more

sounds beautiful! and it has raised the power by at least fifteen "GGs'

Last week we did a trip from Bribie Island to Coffs Harbour without anything behind it and sat on around 100-105 and returned height eights for fuel Wonderful for two tonne of vehicle.

Also it relatively easy to add rear door courtsey lights, the switches are already fitted, so all that is needed is a bit of cable and the odd terminal.

I have also removed the plastic bumper infills and fitted factory driving lights, (boy are these good)

We got 100,000 klm out of the first set of tyres (and most of that was towing either the van or a lot heavier boat) but as soon as we took delivery of it, it went to Pedders for and adjustment to Australian conditions.

Other than routine stuff it hasn't cost us a cent and it is going to stay in our possession till it drops (or we do first)

My wife loves it and prefers to drive the Musso than our other vehicle, in fact it is the car of her choice at the best of times over many others that she at times gets to drive.

I have made one very important mod. to the rear end though, and fitted air bags for rear stability when towing, again cheap and easy to fit, I has a 3XM canopy and an extra Anderson plug in rear for the fridge, but other than Cruise, Steps, Alloys, Alarm and higher diff breathers (for water crossings) thats about it!.

It may be "old tech Merc" but it is so reliable, comfy, quiet and above all sooo easy to drive.

Dunno what the Actyon is like! the new one looks a lot better than the first one which looked like a busted thong at the front.

But the "Musso Rules"

the Actyon and felt i liked the old school of the 2006 musso a bit better, it has ample power, is very comfortable (im 6 foot) you dont feel like your sitting on the floor like other utes so you get better under thigh support and due to the extra cabin height/width and length i can fit my kids in the back without moving my seat forward, although the tray is small because of this,i have only taken it off road a little and so far so good, it tows quite well for a small engine and is economical. i used to think the musso was ugly but it now seems ok next to the mazdas/holdens and greatwalls. I have now done 5 thousand klm and i am very happy with my purchase. Northern Ssangyong in Bundoora Victoria are fantastic and were half the reason for me taking a chance with an unknown brand to me. Their service is awesome.

I would definitely buy another ssangyong! space, low price, economical, comfort, solid feel, better than i thought quality could do with a little more get up and go, could do with a minor lift for extra clearence and front underbody bash plate should be a bit stronger

I have a 2006 Dual Cab Sports and would prefer Ssangyong went back to these instead of the ugly and less impressive Actyon. Very economical, comfortable and spacious. Does everything I want it to do and would probably do a lot more if required. Plenty of room for a right foot accelerator (for those with disabilities), allows plenty of clearance from the brake pedal. Had some minor problems, none of which took more than 30 minutes to fix. I would have no hesitation in recomending the Musso. being a former owner of mercedes benz cars I may be a little biased. I find that the vehicleis very comfortable… Read more

to ride in, we don't hesitate to travel up to six hours at a time. The leg room in the back is very good. It has excellent economy, and good road holding ability when you compare the Musso to other ATVs. Strangely enough the clock seems to decide when it is time to change. The dust seal around the tailgate is non existant.

rubber has made a huge differance to the lower rev range starts to realy pull at about 1400rpm now

I fitted a finer mesh screen over the sump guard to protect the oil cooler before i went it came back with a few dents in it so i may have saved myself some big problems suggest anyone going bush do the same. Cheap great value for money. Good finnish 10.8km to the ltr around town.

You can fit real grownups in the back seat and they can still walk when they get out.

Merc power A bit light on for ground clearance in the front.

Not a lot of power at the bottom end of the rev range.

Oil cooler not well protected by the sump guard

Good – As good an all round working 4wd drive vehicle as I have ever driven. Great car to drive. You won't get better for the money, or a lot more money. Been driving 4WD since the seventies. Finally found one that does what I need. Very comfortable and easy to drive around town and on the highway. My wife finds it easier to drive than her Peugeot… Read more

206.

Tows a trailer well on and off road.

Can get to anywhere I'm likely to want to go and can get there easily.

Rear seating genuine adult size seats, hard to find in a 4wd ute.

All that for around $30K. Need to get used to the low end lack of power (but theres no shortage of power in low range for the 4wdriver)

Not great load carrying capacity for a ute.

Very poor ramp over angle if the sidesteps are fitted

Only minor mechanical issues so far (after 18 months) EGR gasket blew and took a while to get a new one.

Screw missing from door handle, again took a while to get a newey.

Had clock problems early on but after playing with all the buttons for a while it went away
