Don't make 'em like they used to – Kettle was about 8 years old when it began to badly leak through the window recently. Reading reviews for later models, this seems to be a common issue, but for some people it is occurring much earlier. I guess that is about what to expect these days. Years ago we had one kettle last 30 years with element replaced a couple of times. Show details
Replaced, replacement failed – First one had a strong plastic smell, replaced it and the replacement sprung a leak through the water level window. Poor quality. Overall this is positioned as a premium product and the build is just not very good. Would avoid the brand going forward. I'd expect a kettle in this price range to last more than a couple of years. OMG, what have I been drinking for all these years!!! – I purchased a cafe series kettle some time ago, I thought - hey spend a little (lot) more on something and it will last a long time and give service. Well I cant understand how these series of kettles (and toasters and other things) could possibly last in a commercial environment. Recently we went to clean the kettle and the lid struggled to… Read more
open.. when we finally got it open with a bit of wiggling.. We could see the lid (made of plastic) was split in two down the middle with small pieces of plastic everywhere.. on further inspection, we could see that the hinge (also made of plastic) had been flacking away into our water for some time. plastic could easily fall apart with little pressure. terrible. we have young kids and this kettle has been used to make baby bottles for the last two years.. I cant believe it. For a kettle that cost upwards or $100 - how does this happen?
Very noisy – Very, very noisy and heavy. Had it for 4 years and no electrical problems but we purchased it because of its title and have been somewhat disappointed. Sunbeam have provided us with some great items over the years but this wasn't one of them. We are off to purchase one that doesn't drown out the tele.
Still Boiling After All This Time! – I bought my Sunbeam Cafe Series way back in 2006! It has been used regularly most of that time, and is only just starting to develop a problem - an power overload I suspect as it has started tripping the phase circuit breaker when it is used when other appliances are working. However, not bad after 9 years of almost continual use; I've never had… Read more
a kettle last this long before. I've never experienced any bad tastes from the water in it, unlike some other reviewers. I'd actually score it 4.5 stars - my only criticism is that it is heavy.
Heavy, noisy, tainted water. Waste of money – We were surprised to find that this kettle is so heavy, it feels as if it is full when it is empty. This does not indicate quality, because the kettle failed after 3 years and we were pleased to see it go because of it's other shortcomings. First, when it was new Water from it was so tainted with a toxic taste it was un drinkable. We contacted… Read more
Sunbeam and they told us boiling it dry a few times would fix it. It took about a dozen boils! If they knew about it, why wasn't it in the instructions. Second, it is anything but quiet. Third, it is slow to turn off, filling the kitchen with steam. We have replaced it with a glass Homemaker from Kmart, which is light, fast, and has no problems with taste, at about one third the cost of the Sunbeam. Good riddance.
Lasted only 17 months!! – Liked the kettle a lot until one weekend it started to throw out the safety switch in the house, tried it in 6 different wall sockets ..all the same and as this was the only appliance that did so had to leap to the conclusion "it was the kettle" Sunbeam said sorry out of warranty!! Will buy a $20 Big W as it has 12 months Warr as well, not happy Jan! Shape Noisy and didnt have a long life
Great Looker, Worked well (but not for long enough) – This was out and out my favourite kettle since a 1920's ceramic one I had for many years and into which I put an everlasting plate element. Both had this diamond form. The sunbeam stainless steel jug, kettle or whatever was superb. Great to look at, easy to hold and pour, quick and rationally designed to eliminate fading of components. kettle that you would be happy to keep for decades.
You should be able to. Why build with stainless steel and without contact elements if you only want the thing to last 2 years? Whether the problem is the connection between the powercord or the element itself something seems to be ill-designed. A great jug like this could have a solid bar connecting the two like a busbar. There could be no reason why it shouldn't last 20 or 50 years instead of 20. Yet this type of longevity seems to be pretty much the norm no matter how good these things look.
Well, I really liked it while it worked but have now gone back to the round stainless steel Breville which we had for just a little bit longer prior to this nearly wonderful jug.
On others comment. Yes a bit of noise but boiling water makes noise. Great look, feel, suface durability, quick. Satsifisfactory noise level. Didnt last a reasonable distance.
Horrible taste from this kettle – That taste from this kettle is disgusting. We have boiled and rinsed it more than 20 times but no improvement. Sunbeam - please provide a chemical analysis of the water that this kettle produces once it has boiled, because I am suspicious! from the shelves and must be recalled, or else prove that it is doing no harm. If a car manufacturer sold vehicles that they knew had faulty brakes "some of the time", then they would fix the issue immediately. Do you think if you are poisoning people slowly you are any less responsible for consumer welfare than them? Remove this product from the shelves unless you can prove it is safe!
The water that comes out is not the same as the water that goes in. The taste is awful and I suspect it is toxic. Do not buy this kettle.
I have just found your comment and have exactly the same problem with mine and was hoping there was a simple solution to fix it.
Noisey and horrid taste – My 15 year old, made in England, Russell Hobbs recently died so I did a bit of research (I hate noisey kettles) and purchased this kettle. I figured the Sunbeam Cafe series have a good reputation and bit the bullet. Got it home, gave it about 3 boils to get rid of the new smell and made a cup of tea. First of all, the kettle is not really very… Read more
quiet, my 15 year old Russell Hobbs was quieter and the metallic taste in the boiled water made me feel sick. I boiled it 3 more times and got the same result. I called Sunbeam and they told me to return the kettle - great support, thank you Sunbeam! The retailer, RT Edwards wasn't as good, wanting me to buy another of their kettles, which I argued about and they gave me my refund. Great support from Sunbeam, 2 litre capacity, heavy duty Noisey, horrid metallic taste in boiled water
Noisy – For a "quiet" kettle, this is one of the noisiest kettles I have ever owned. The style is lovely and it is a great size, but we couldn't hear the tv or have a conversation whilst this it was boiling. I lasted only a short time before I could stand it no longer and picked up a cheap $18 kettle from the supermarket. Shape, size Extremely noisy kettle

Disappointment – After 15 months of use, it started to show signs of leaking through the glass indicator. Sunbeam advised that scaling will cause indicator to separate over time and needs descaling. This warning was never mentioned in the instruction manual. Still in the process of shopping for another brand of kettle. Becoming very cautious what's available. Good size Leaking through glass indicator; offerred only 2 year "element" gaurantee.
Love Cafe Series Peace & Quiet Kettle 2.0 litre – We all love this kettle and have been no complains about it. apparently the only 2 litre around. We love the size, weight and look - everythin about it. Purchased just over 2 years ago, but we had been back to purchase a second one as a spare - but Farmers does not stock this anymore according to assistance. 2 litre size, Shape, Look/feel and all the features as promised Not Readily available

Nice but flawed – I've had this kettle quite a while and I like the look of it but it is rather heavy. Not a good kettle for tiny women. :-) The spout doesn't open very far and filling could be simpler - not that it's a problem but it's noticable compared to what can be done. It boils quickly but it tends to overboil for my liking. I'm a tea drinker and it ends… Read more
up too hot to pour straight onto leaves. I have to either turn it off manually or wait a little before pouring. I have to wait anyway for tea so it's bearable.
I used to have a taste problem. It didn't start off like that and using vinegar only made it worse because then the water tasted like vinegar for ages. I solved it by ensuring that I didn't leave water in the kettle after I used it - although it took a while for the taste to go completely. I very nearly threw it out but with the taste issue gone I'm happy to keep it. Looks, boils quickly, good capacity heavy, could be easier to fill
Terrible Taint – I bought this kettle online a month ago. It still has a foul plastic/metallic taste that I can't get rid of despite contacting sunbeam and following their instructions to boil dry x3 and fill with vinegar. To be fair, the 'shop' will refund my money and have told me that this particular kettle has been discontinued. I think I'll just buy a… Read more
cheap kettle in Target/Kmart next time! It holds a large amount of water. It's a very heavy kettle - even without water in it. It has a squarish base and can be difficult to align - it's much easier to have a round kettle!

Kettle leaked. Have replaced with another brand – In my first review, I had used the kettle for a day and the main issue was the after-taste. After two days I discovered that the kettle was actually leaking immediately after boiling. A funny taste, while unpleasant and annoying is tolerable. Water leaking from a kettle (and an expensive kettle at that) and creating an electrical hazard however,… Read more
is not. I have since returned the kettle and replaced it with a different brand which I am very happy with. 2L capacity.Sleek brushed stainless steel design Leaking, unpleasant metallic/plastic aftertaste

I think it has become noisier over time given its now june 2012 since owning from may 09 – I received this kettle as a kitchen tea gift and i wish i could return it. It is so noisy i have to shut the sliding doors just to watch tv when the kettle is on.. The stainless steel gets fingerprint marks eveywhere and is annoying to try to clean off. I like the look of its square shape however the steam blows towards cupboards and walls cause… Read more
its only got 4 square sides to click onto, a round kettle doesnt have this issue. Nice hot boil Noisy, square shape makes pointing the spout steam sometimes difficult to point away/out from walls/ cupboards, it doesnt have mil increments or cup per person increments
Nice kettle – I've owned this kettle for some 9 months. It's good looking, boils water quite fast, is quieter than most kettles and certainly quieter than the Breville silent kettle it replaced. It's not absolutely silent but it's not a screamer like most electric kettles. It's the heaviest kettle I've owned -- quite heavy indeed when full. I wouldn't… Read more · 2
recommend it for someone with arthritis. It pours well but isn't particularly easy to fill. It doesn't switch off quickly enough after boiling for my taste. It boils furiously for some time before switching off. I usually reach over and switch it off manually.
It's a kettle for right-handers. The water level is at right-angles to the handle and can be seen only if you are right handed. I'm left-handed and so can't see the water level if filling via the spout. Hence I need to lift the lid. But the lid doesn't open very far and you have to lift higher to get the tap in and see the level. Perhaps the low-opening lid is protection against scalding.
The square shape is a pleasant visual change from the traditional round shape but has the disadvantage that you can just plonk the kettle on the base. You must line the corners up. I guess this is not a deal breaker but I find it a little annoying. I wouldn't buy a square kettle again.
Some reviews have mentioned a funny taste. Not for me. Perhaps it's Melbourne water. Fast boil, quiet, good looking Tricky to fill, heavy, square shape, slow switch off on boil. Not good for left-handers.
Strong plastic taste and smell won't go away – The kettle boils reasonably quickly and is very quiet - but it is of little use if the water comes out tasting like melted plastic. I don't know if it is the plastic spout or the teflon coating on the element, but it is nauseating at best. You'd expect a lot more given the price. I've boiled 20 times and rinsed, no dice. Speed Plastic smell and taste, price

Noisy unreliable piece of junk – Not very happy bought it beacause it said "piece and quiet" not a chance thought it was faulty so I had it replaced but still just as noisy. It sounds like a Boeing 747 in your kitchen you cannot hear a word. Took quite some time to get rid of the horrible plastic taste in the water. And now 18 months later it has decided to stop working all together for a quite pricy kettle it is a bit let down. Don't waste your money. Looks
Peace and Quiet- you must be kidding – We have bought two of these. The first started quietly and then got louder to the point and, as described by one reviewer, started to sound like a 747!! It then leaked after a month and we replaced it. The second did the same- quiet for the first few boils and then off she went. I liked the feel and the look noisy noisy noisy. One leaked and replacement the lid would l not lift- the replacement was noisy too
Kettle still stinks and taints water 8 months after first use – This kettle is terrible. Quiet enough but it stinks still, after 8 months of use. I tried to contact Sunbeam about it for over 3 months. I didn't receive a call back, then I got cut off, then I got a call back and was asked to email. I have now followed up on the email to no avail and am out of my warranty period after having had the kettle in… Read more
storage for a year whilst renovating. We have tried bicarb and leaving the lid open and all sorts of things but guests keep asking "is there something wrong with your water pipes". I am disappointed in the kettle given the price ($120) and am disappointed in Sunbeam's lack of customer service. I only want to swap it to try another, not have a refund but I just cant get any kind of attention. I own a lot of Sunbeam products, many that I am happy with, but if there is a problem, then forget service. I will never buy Sunbeam again. I am also extremely disappointed in the expensive Mix Master I own which is deafening to use. I am uncertain what to do next. Good looking Tainting of the water with a plastic smell and taste

Good – I bought this kettle to replace another that did not switch off when the kettle was empty, so very happy that this switches off when picked up. Looks good in the kitchen but is very heavy. Kettle hold a large volume of water but takes quite a while to boil. Very noisy for a kettle that they claim is quiet. The water level indicator is only… Read more
on one side which I find is the opposite side to where I would prefer. Boils two litres of water, attractive design, turns off when picked up Heavy, water indicator on only one side, noisy (for a 'quiet' kettle)
Excellent – This is our second try at a sunbeam we had a different one that leaked and had trouble replacing. However the two are chalk and cheese this is heavier quality and thus quieter which is a big plus. It is larger and holds more water than a lot on the market. it is easy to place on the dock. The spout is well designed and does not drip when pouring.… Read more
The lead is retractable into the base and is a good length. It is relatively easy to keep clean for a stainless steel finish. Great design, well built, fast boil. A bit pricey
Good – The price is quite extreme for a kettle, but I decided not to skimp on price and try it since this is my 4th in 12months. Warranty is slightly lacking for what it boasts. It's not overally noisy, quieter than our previous Tefal. When filled with 2L, and due to it's materials it's pretty damn heavy for a kettle - definitely not due to poor… Read more
design/weight distribution. Both a con and pro, the water filter is metal, so more sturdy but the filter holes are generally larger.
Overall I would generally score a 5 so far if not for very very minor design flaw (which most kettles would fail anyway). Simple, clean and stylish design. Totally concealed element. Water gauge window as opposed to a connecting tube like gauge. Sturdy, and handle feels fine - better you see it at the shops. Price, warranty, being very fussy I would have liked the plastic bit holding the water filter to be removable to stop sediment accumulating inside.
Good – Attractive design, easy to use and pour. Love the stainles steel look and 'solid' appearance, but would like it to shut off faster when boiled! Large capacity, well balanced weight and pours well. Metal inside and out makes it both attractive on the benchtop, and hygenic to use and keep clean. Cordless and easy to position on the dock. Boils… Read more
quite fast and is not as noisy as our last kettle. Does not shut off quickly when boiling unless water level is fairly high. When water is 2/3 or below takes a while to shut off and thus produces a lot of steam and can be a safety hazard.
OK – We got this as a wedding present, along with the Sunbeam Cafe Series Toaster, so they look great side by side. It is a good kettle which boils the water fairly quickly yet sounds like a steam train is in the room. Do be very wary where you place it as my husband has burnt his arm a number of times by brushing past after it has boiled. They need to… Read more
design a stainless steel exterior that keeps the heat in. It looks good and keeps the water hotter for longer. Holds a fair amount of water and is neat and compact. I really love how the cord wraps underneath the base so you don't need to have a long cord hanging around. Very noisy and you can easily burn yourself as the outside gets extremely hot.
Good – I bought this sunbeam kettle a while back for my mum. She absoloutly loves it, it looks so stylish on the bench. I find it to be a little noisy. Like cant hear anyone talking noisy.. a little industrial almost, and it does take quite some time to boil which is slightly annoying but i do rate it highly. sometimes it leakes from the top if you fill… Read more
it really high but it does the job. it does hold the heat in there longer than a cheaper kettle which is handy, so the pros outweigh the cons. It looks amazing, holds the heat so you dont have to re boil if you forget about it for a little bit it is really noisy! and it does take a while to boil
Terrible – we spent extra money on this kettle to get the concealed element, a reputable brand name (we have other 'Cafe series' items), and a steel construction...returned after 2 weeks of hoping the leak was just careless pouring or filling, and finally admitted this was not a safe product for our kitchen. Concealed element, stainless steel finish is nice,… Read more
square design, part of cafe series leaked down side onto base, constantly needs wiping to keep looking clean due to the finish..not cool touch after boil, including lid, making it hard to refill...boiled for too long (would not turn off)..too noisy..
Good – Whilst it looks good - and hey thats why we bought it, its very loud whilst boiling and it takes awhile as well. I would only buy it for its look , I am sure there are quieter brands/types out there. Ours broke down after 6 months and it took 8 months (I am not kidding) for a replacement to arrive via the authorised repairers, after much… Read more
complaining to sunbeam, we ended up with a free replacement kettle and then ours arrived 2 weeks later! I dont know why we couldnt get one off the shelf and get them to foot the bill. Looks good, and large capacity to boil Very loud and takes too long too boil oh and its expensive!
Terrible – Sunbeam cafe series use to come with a 5 year warranty. I dont feel this kettle is of the quality i expected from sunbeam. Very disappointing for the price.i think i'll buy different brand next time! Annoying lid. Does not sit firmly enough on dock and is knocked off easy. Should have replaceable element like toaster for that price. ****overpriced!!!!!!!! Horrible diamond shape. Handle feels cheap.
Excellent – very good stylish unit with a range of good features, not cheap but I think you are getting good value for money here as I went through a few good brand name jugs before the sunbeam cafe series and most of them similar prices and the quality wasn't even close to this one very stylish, practical, super fast boil not cheap
Good – I love this kettle. I was looking for a 2L kettle and there are not many on the market but am very grateful I found this one. It boils so quietly that I forget that I have switched it on. It looks sleek and trendy. If you are looking for a kettle that is well made, huge (good for cooking; you don't have to do 2 quantities of boiled water for… Read more
large saucepans)and good looking, this is the kettle for you. A bit pricy but I feel the price is well justified. It's 2L capacity, it boils super quiet, it looks sleek. I have had the kettle for a month now and it still smells rather chemically (but doesn't taste like chemicals) but I have been told this will disapear over time. Is rather expensive at around $120.
Excellent – The new peace and quiet kettle is truly peaceful and quiet. I keep forgetting I have turned it on, as it is so quiet. It is very fast to boil and the problem with previous cafe series kettle, where the outside gets too hot and can burn, has been solved. However, the advantages of the previous model have been retained, where the water stays hotter… Read more
for longer. It has all the features I was looking for - cordless, cord wrap base, large 2 litre capacity, removable water filter, auto-turn off and indicator light. I particularly like the hinged lid, which opens the kettle with a press of a button and you can fill the kettle without opening the lid. The water gauge is easy to see without having to wear glasses. The kettle is well balanced and not too heavy, and even with arthritis I can pour the water without spilling it or being scalded by steam. On top of that it looks great and matches my other stainless steel appliances. 2 year element guarantee on top of the 12 month replacement guarantee.Fast boil and very quiet. 2 litre capacity, stainless steel inside and out, water filter, light indicator and auto cut-out. Cordless base with cord wrap, push button hinged lid. A bit annoying was the metallic smell and taste to the water when we first started using it.
