The ReversaGrill was given to us for testing. The ReversaGrill strongly reminds me of the Sunbeam electric frypan that my mother has been cooking the family roasts in for about 50 years - and yes, the frypan has actually lasted that long. The probe on the ReversaGrill that you plug in is almost identical to the one on the frypan, and the ReversaGrill - particularly when it has the flat side up - simply looks like a larger version of the frypan but without a lid (and more on that later). Whilst the cooking area would be about twice that of my...
Read more mother's electric frypan it'd have about 40% of the cooking area of my hooded gas BBQ and is probably a bit smaller than something like the Weber Baby Q. In line with YouTube video protocol my children forensically unpacked the grill and reported to me that it was well protected but without excessive packaging. They also quickly worked out how it went together, including the safety latch. We used the Reversagrill indoors (under the oven's rangehood so that the house didn't fill with smoke) for a variety of meals - bulgogli (which worked really well on it), sausages, chicken, sliced vegetables, fish and the real test, some fairly thick steaks. We mainly used the flat side and not the ridged one. My concern with the Reversagrill was whether it would spatter oil all over the place (as it doesn't have a lid) and if it would get hot enough to put a char on the meats. The concern in relation to heat was unwarranted as, when the control probe was turned up to "Max", it quickly charred the chicken we first tested out on it. We'd usually use a hooded gas BBQ for steaks so I was interested to see how they'd turn out on the ReversaGrill - the answer was really well: the grill got hot enough to char the outside of the steaks but have the inside medium rare. I was quite impressed by it - I'd usually have the gas BBQ at over 200 C to get that type of char so it suggests that the grill did get at least that hot. There were a couple of areas for improvement with the ReversaGrill that became apparent when we did the steaks. Whilst I was impressed by how they were cooked (charred outside, still juicy inside) which indicates that the ReversaGrill got to a high temperature, I was surprised to discover that my family were less impressed with the steaks - they said that the steaks were less tasty than when done on our Weber Genesis hooded BBQ: because speculated one, they weren't being smoked as well and the flavour was going up the extractor fan. That mirrored my own thoughts when we first unpacked the grill, which was that it could do with a lid to stop spatter and keep heat in - so, more like my mother's electric frypan. The other issue is that of temperature control - the control probe simply has markers of "Min", "Med" and "Max" along the dial, without any indication on the grill to explain what temperatures those settings, or any between them, equated to. (On checking the manual I note that it says that at "Max" it's approximately between 195C and 250C - that's really not precise enough, and it may not be doing those temperatures in any case - without an accurate gauge you simply wouldn't know.). As I noted above, when we do steaks there's a minimum temperature that I'm aiming to get the grill to but with the ReversaGrill there was no way of knowing if I was anywhere near that so I turned it up to "Max" and waited to see how it worked. I'd considered seeing if I could borrow an infrared thermometer to check the temperatures at the various settings and I may yet do that. The manual does say that the grill is 2400W (NB, the online description says both 2200 watts and 2400 watts - which is it?), which given that a single bar heater is 1500W suggests that the ReversaGrill can get pretty hot. The "DiamondForce" part of the name relates to the non-stick coating, which purportedly includes diamonds. Whatever the case, you shouldn't be using metal implements on it and my experience with non-stick surfaces over the last 30 years is that I'd prefer to just have a plain metal surface that I can season, as all of the non-stick surfaces have eventually peeled or worn off. So, it's big enough to do a BBQ for a small family or a grilled breakfast, the reversible sides give you the option of putting grill marks on your food or cooking things like eggs on the flat side, it heats up quickly and appears to get very hot and it works well for grilling. Cleaning it is pretty straightforward. It also appears to be pretty durable and you could probably take it with you if you went away for a weekend and wanted a non-gas grill. But you'll need to use it outside or under an extractor fan and it would be an improvement if there was some indication of the actual temperatures it's at and if there was some kind of lid for it. I also think that for safety it needs a warning light when it's on, as the red light only cycles on and off to show when it's heating and there are no visual cues - unlike with a gas or charcoal BBQ - that it's actually at a very hot temperature, so I'd be keeping it well away from little kids fingers.- Ease of Use

Working out how to set up the ReversaGrill was a little bit difficult. It's only three parts and should be easy, but there's a little safety latch that you have to align, between the oil-catching base and the heat plate, which isn't straight forward (it wasn't for me, anyway). Once you know how to do it, though, it's very easy. It's just a bit fiddly. It's a safety mechanism to ensure that the plate is correctly set atop the oil catch, in the overall base (which has plastic handles that never heat up so it's safe to touch) before you plug it i...
Read moren. The main thing I love about the ReversaGrill is how evenly it cooks, especially if the meat you're cooking isn't curled or of uneven thickness. There is information in the booklet as to how long you should cook chicken, fish, beef, and the thickness of each meat relative to those time frames. Thicker meat obviously takes longer, but the description mentions thinner meats (1 inch or thereabouts). I started out cooking chicken thigh fillet (which is the meat I had at the time that I first received the grill) and it cooked beautifully evenly, with a nice bit of crisp around the edges, but one part of the chicken was thicker than the rest so that took longer. Just make sure you keep in mind the thickness and the evenness of the meat that you are cooking. It also allows the meat to taste nicer too, because of the even cooking. It doesn't need oil but you can use some if you so choose. There are some drain holes at one end of the plate that allow grease from the meat to slip down into the 'oil catch' underneath. I used the grill side once; while it made delicious darker grill lines on the meat, this did mean that the parts of the meat NOT touching the grill cooked a tiny bit slower than the rest. The meat I used was a little bit thicker than what is mentioned in the booklet, though, so again keep this in mind. I also once used it to cook chicken legs, which I do not recommend (boned meats are not mentioned in the booklet). Boned meat takes forever even on a conventional stove. The ReversaGrill is very, VERY easy to clean. I generally just wipe it with wet paper towel once the plate has cooled down. The plate section can be cleaned safely with dishwashing liquid in the sink/etc, as there are no power components on it (all the power is confined to the power cord and its plug with the temperature gauge) but there ARE metal prongs that slide INTO the power plug, so make sure these are completely dry before you plug in the plate. Overall, the ReversaGrill is very handy to have. It's larger than expected so it takes up a bit of space, but the ease of cleaning and the evenness of heating make it preferrable to using other conventional means of cooking (like the stove). I'm actually quite partial to it. :)- Build Quality

We have been using this grill now for the last month and overall my wife and I are reasonably impressed with its versatility. It is light weight with an extra-large cooking area which makes it ideal for cooking various foods types at once. The easy flip plate from flat to grill surface gives it the edge over other electric grills which come in either flat or grill variants but not both.
The grill can be used inside or outside (be sure it is under cover if expecting rain). So far we have only used it inside, sitting on top of the trivets on ou...
Read morer gas stove (please make sure the gas burners are turned of). We have cooked sausages, steak, crumbed calamari, various vegetables and pineapple rings, all with very pleasing results. The instruction manual says that when you set the temperature dial on “Max”, the actual hot plate temperature can vary anywhere between 195C and 250C, a difference of 55 degrees. Thus it may take some trial and error to find the best temperature for whatever food you are cooking. However we have found that most foods cook best on Max temp. We also found that as soon as you move the dial off the Max setting, the temperature of the plate drops greatly and the food takes much longer to cook. It would be a good idea if the temperature control was more accurate and had actual numbers in degrees on the dial rather then just, Min, Med and Max settings. While the surface is non stick and easy to wipe clean if you wish to wash up in a standard size sink it can be a bit of a chore as it’s overall size makes it very hard to wash without making somewhat of a mess ( water can get everywhere ). If you have a large farmhouse sink this may not be an issue, or try using the laundry trough instead (this is what I did). The instruction manual says that the hot plate and base are dishwasher safe, however just trying to place the items into our dishwasher (standard full size under bench) has shown almost impossible to do. Both the plate and base are quite large, the only way they may fit into a standard dishwasher ( and I am not sure that they would fit) is to remove all internal mounting racks from dishwasher (we have not gone to this extreme ), so I cannot comment on how clean a dishwasher will clean items.- +3

I was pleasantly surprised, but this electric grill heats up so incredibly fast.
The option to switch between grill or flat-plate is great, allowing the fat/oil/juice to drip through, or the option to letting the food simmer on the flat plate.
So far, I have tried a variety of vegetables, haloumi cheese as well as steak, and have not been disappointed.
The one downside of this grill is the size. While I appreciate the fact that it is to imitate an outdoor grill and the capacity to cook for a few people at the same time, storage of it becomes a...

We have been using the Sunbeam Reversagrill for about a month now, and we love it. We've used it for many meals because it is so easy to use. It's large enough for a family of 4-5, even though we are just a family of 2.
It is quick to heat up and the heating is very even with absolutely no hot-spots, which amazed us. We mostly use the flat side, but have also used the grill side for bbq style meals with great success. Because of its size, I can usually cook the whole meal on one appliance, so I don't have to worry about having multiple pans a...
Read morend saucepans on the go at one time. It is quite a large appliance (but still very light) so take that into consideration when purchasing and also storing. We have a small kitchen so it was a little more of an issue for us, but we managed to find it a handy storage place that is easy to get it in and out of considering we use it so often. We have had big family dinners with it and it's worked a treat. Cleaning is super easy if you've cooked a non-fatty meal (and don't have a dishwasher) but for the more messy meals like marinated steak, chicken breasts or burgers its a little more of a job because we don't have a dishwasher. It's still easier than cleaning multiple pans, but its not a simple wipe down. If you have a dishwasher, cleaning is as easy as putting it in and shutting the door! One trick we do to help with the cleaning is to cover the drip-tray under the hotplate with aluminum foil so all we have to do it remove it and replace with fresh foil when cleaning. If I could make one change to the appliance it would be to have duel power at either end of the hotplate so you can cook some things at one end on a lower heat, and things up the other end at a greater heat. Other than that, its great. Overall we would highly recommend getting yourself one of these if you enjoy BBQ style cooking with the ease of an indoor appliance.Purchased in .
