One key reason it's better than Breville Precision Brewer – I got this to replace a Breville Precision Brewer largely because the Breville is impossible to clean inside the cavities of the lid of the carafe and it gets disgusting and mouldy in there.(How is this ok?) The Moccamaster is a much simpler machine, no timer, no settings, just two switches: on or off, and a high and low keep warm switch. There… Read more ·  1

are no hidden cavities, it's easy to clean. For that reason alone I'd choose it every time. But it also has a classic design and looks a lot better to my eyes than the Breville. It makes just as good coffee. I was a little surprised how light weight the plastic parts were, but I've never worried about breaking them. My one small complaint is that I wish the keep warm 'low' setting was even lower, as the coffee seems to overheat and affect the taste if left for too long. Also shout out to friendly guys at moccamasteranz.com who replaced a rubber foot for free when it was my fault that I lost one.

Reliable machine, had it for many years, simple to use – Have been making a full pot of coffee on this machine at home, with ground coffee beans, for many years. Machine still works perfectly and makes consistently beautiful coffee. Coffee is always hot and stays hot for about 40 minutes. Show details ·  1

Excellent machine and important to my coffee offering – I’ve had a pastel green classic in my cafe for some time now. It works well alongside a tried and tested Grand 1.8L. Our barista team rate the coffee and ease of use. I find the classic pretty forgiving and consistent and that’s important because we run several specialty batch brews each day. The set and forget process is actually a real help… Read more ·  1

alongside our main espresso offering. Once the grind is set there’s little more to worry about. The approach behind these machines is solid. The engineers have worked out how to optimise the brew and that makes it simple. Have tried other main stream consumer brands and they don’t cut it under pressure in the same way the classic does.

After 10 years, here's the verdict – As a barista with 10 yrs experience in the industry I have a long experience with the Moccamaster. I've owned one at home for several years and used them in commercial settings plenty as well. I've seen the Moccamaster work from a humble, once a week home drip coffee machine to a full blown commercial specialty coffee tool and a workhorse of the… Read more

third wave coffee industry.

Here's the issues. No matter what you say to the contrary Technivorm, your machine does NOT moisten the grounds consistently, you ABSOLUTELY need to stir to achieve good immersion and therefore a more consistent extraction. Technivorm will never back down from this one but I hear from professional baristas again and again. If your brewing on the Moccamaster, agitate those grinds!

Another major issue to both home and commercial usability is the brewing time, the Moccamaster brew cone had a frustrating habit of slowing down and getting "stuck" around the last third/ quarter of extraction. The small hole on the cone seems to get blocked up, the dripping slows right down or stops completely therefore over extracting and ruining your brew. Now of course you would assume your grind is too fine and aim for a courser setting however this rarely seems to help much, I've gone far too course for the coffee I'm brewing just to achieve a decent flow, often this results in an under extracted, sour tasting brew.

For those home users out there who require a stronger brew or for commercial settings where a barista always aims to extract a coffee at the finest grind setting for maximum flavour and body this will be a major obstacle.

After many years and careful analysis using different coffees, roast profiles, grinders and various filter paper brands we now believe this issue is caused my the shape and design of the Moccamaster brew cone. It seems like the striated shape of the inner walls of the plastic cone along with the position of the small drip hole and the design of the latch mechanism work together to create a vacuum-like seal between the wet filter paper and the plastic cone. Just enough so that when your brew reaches a certain point and the weight of the water above is not enough to push the coffee out through that hole, it suddenly slows down, drips very slowly or stops dripping all together.

With a very quick agitation, adjusting the paper filter and by manipulating the latch open and close you might potentially save your brew by disrupting the vacuum seal and continuing the extraction but you have to be standing there ready to go as it brews just in case. Too often I've turned on the machine and walked away to come back to a ruined mess.

Aside from the obvious disappointment that comes from your coffee tasting burned or underdeveloped, this is also an expensive exercise if you drink good coffee. When I'm using specialty roasted single origin beans, this experience could cost me nearly AUD$5! I could simply join a vitamin supplement MLM if I wanted to throw my money away like that, and I wouldn't waste good coffee beans.

Technivorm have virtually not touched the design of the machine since it's conception in the 1950s/60s. Sure the circuitry and parts have been updated as technology improved but the overall function and design has remained basically the same. This has possibly created a couple of issues with the machine that have persisted for far too long without solution. This may be due to a culture of belief within the company that thier product is perfect.

What tends to happen is they will jump on here and defend the product, citing the SCAs approvals or the strict testing standards at the European Brewing Association. They will tell you how the Moccamaster brews the perfect cup of coffee, it just has to be a very very specific cup of coffee, exactly how Technivorm like it. For such a large and pricey machine, it offers no personalisation, no room to experiment, even just a little, with brew time, consistency, temperature or flow rate.

Technivorm unfortunately believes the product is perfect and this causes the greatest damage to the customer, they won't change a thing about it. The company seems to be unwilling or unable to listen to the customers and baristas who have used this machine for decades. If they won't change and move forward with thier customers and industry through this exciting and challenging new era in coffee, they risk becoming a fossil.

I hope they can start to listen and move forward with us to the boundaries of brewing and beyond but I'm not holding out.

This post was inspired by yet another subpar, bitter cup from my Moccamaster this morning.

Perfect Koffie – Very happy with the Moccamaster. It brews at the perfect temperature and is also quick and quiet. I much prefer using the Moccamaster to pod machines. It is easier to clean and maintain. It is an expensive initial cost but I feel it will last longer than other brand pod coffee machines we’ve purchased over the years - it’s 2 years old now and… Read more ·  1

hasn’t missed a beat. The machine is solid and well made in The Netherlands - built to last. Hi We couldn’t be happier.

Very good – One of the best filter machines available. Missed out on 5 stars because of a widely known problem that’s never been fixed - the water doesn’t hit the coffee evenly. You must stir manually once or twice to have proper extraction. Show details ·  2

Flimsy – Makes great coffee. Beware the thin, flimsy glass jug which slipped in my hand while washing it in the sink and shattered! Replacement one is very expensive. Wouldn't buy this machine again just for that reason. I will get the Breville with stainless steel jug! Show details

Think Again – We bought to replace our drip coffee machine, first of all it was not hot enough and we have to microwave our coffee second it does not make a strong enough cup of coffee, we tried to contact the company which we couldn't and they finally emailed us than called us but told us we could not send it back for making weak or cold coffee as that was… Read more

changing our mind, I have put 10 scoops of Vittoria I have tried 2 other brands with no luck it is disgusting they should be ashamed of themselves, I get that it only makes 3 large cups of coffee as I was hoping for more but I had to buy a Kitchen Aid machine for 100 dollars to get a great hot strong cup of coffee, for 400 dollars DO NOT BUY THIS and run the other way as now it is just a nice looking white door stop.

It's perfect, best coffee! – The moccamaster is the best purchase ever! So easy to use, easy to clean and makes an absolutely delicious coffee. It's good to see that when you go to cafes around Victoria they are also using the moccamaster, which proves it's a great machine! I wasn't a coffee lover until I purchased this machine, now I use it every day!  Show details

So worth it – Bought this Moccamaster off the back of a very unhappy Nespresso experience - I know, I know... - and two years on, I couldn't be happier with it. It's quick and quiet - and best of all, makes a very hot, rich and flavoursome coffee - not to mention easy to clean and low-maintenance. I'm (still) a coffee ignoramus, but my friends aren't,… Read more

and they love the coffee it makes. Meanwhile I'm just happy to enjoy a great cup of coffee that pretty much makes itself while I'm still waking up, and quietly.

This is one of only a handful of drip machines that coffee experts rate as highly as the great espresso makers, which comes in handy when you're in a cafe needing advice about bean varieties and the staff ask you what type of machine you use.

Like a few of the other reviewers, I bought it direct from the Australian Technivorm distributers, Nordcoffee. They were very patient when I called, and answered all my enquirers. Oh, and the Moccamasters come with a five year warranty as standard.

Best of the Best – After doing my research well I decided to purchase the well reviewed Technivorm Moccamaster. More pricey than the competition, the company has a reputation of building quality machines made to last and support them with a 5 year warranty. While not strong on the whizz bang fancy features this beautiful machine makes the best coffee, super fast and piping hot. I couldn't be more impressed.

Rolls Royce of drip filters – Had ours for about a year now and reckon this is as good as drip filter coffee makers get. Having friends with various brands of drip filter coffee makers(Sunbeam and Breville), my biggest complaint was always coffee not being hot enough out of the machine, considering I drink it black you would expect it to be hot so if you added milk it would… Read more

have to be pre-heated first.

I ended up getting a bit pedantic about the whole thing and stuck a thermometer in the brewing stage and the glass coffee pot of the Moccamaster, an old Sunbeam we still had, a new Sunbeam we had given to our daughter and finally a Breville belonging to my mother.

So comparing the temperatures of 4 drip filter coffee makers at the various stages revealed differences in temp of up to 9-10 degrees, without going in to all the minor details the Moccamaster was by far the hottest followed by our old Sunbeam Aroma coffee 12. Considering the temperature the coffee beans are brewed at is the most important part of the process the Moccamaster won that battle. Moccamaster was also the quickest followed by our old Sunbeam(the Moccamaster can be slowed by adjustment of a switch to increase saturation time).

Now price is another thing altogether, I paid $379 for the Moccamaster and $25 for the old Sunbeam 15 years ago and temperatures between the two were about 4-6 degrees and brewing times similar. The only reason I purchased the Moccamaster was because the on/off button on our old Sunbeam began playing up and I couldn't find the same model in the shops again. There is not a lot of choice when it comes to drip filter coffee makers and I had drank coffee out of most of the others, so that left me with the Moccamaster. Would I buy one again? Yep, but not if I could find the old Sunbeam Aroma coffee 12.

Excellent coffee machine – I purchased the Moccamaster after our old Sunbeam drip filter coffee maker died. Not satisfied with reviews on the cheaper drip filters on the market I wanted a good quality one that won't die after warranty expires. I found a supplier just 5 minutes from me and decided to investigate. The unit is simple to use, fast and very quiet. Unlike my old… Read more

Sunbeam, it gives me the full 10 cups of coffee. My Sunbeam would lose so much water (through steam) that I'd only ever end up with 9 cups instead of the 10 cups of coffee I wanted. The Moccamaster as an auto shut off which is handy when I forget to switch if off. It also has an adjustable flow button on the filter so coffee ground to steep longer if only making 2-6 cups. The heating plate keeps coffee at 80 degrees (yes, I have confirmed this) so no need to "nuke" coffee anymore. The water well has a removable lid so very easy to fill with a jug or pull out sink tap as we have.

Down side..doesn't have a timer so I can't set it to switch on itself. It's a well built and designed unit with a 5 year warranty which was a big drawer card. We're very happy with it. It's pricey but you get what you pay for.

Surprisingly Speedy, Excellent Coffee – Not a cheap machine to buy ( Won the US award for best coffee maker in the world ) and like all coffee makers, if you put rubbish beans in then rubbish coffee comes out . That said, hard to beat for getting great coffee and amazingly quick from start to finish. Highly reccommended after trying 6 other coffee makers in the last 10 years this,… Read more

coffee.

It is great to have access to delicious coffee so easily at home; i found the pricing affordable and overall good value- I have used cheaper models in the past and been quite dissatisfied with the flavour of the coffee.

I also love the design-it is faultless, so simple to use but impressive functionality, it is also beautiful to look at (as if it were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright!)

Highly reccomended!
