48V auto is a nice upgrade – Upgraded from a 2022 SR5 manual to a 2024 SR5 48V Auto. Feels like a completely different motor under the bonnet, goes fantastic with no lag at all (manual was annoyingly laggy at low speeds when loaded up). Not sure if it’s just the change from going from manual to auto but it’s just so much more responsive and torquey. I use it for work so… Read more

loaded up with around 400-500kg extra.

48V system fires the engine up instantly if you wish to use the stop start. Only annoying this is that the engine fan seems to run quite a bit so it’s a little noisy at times. Not sure if it’s a 48V system thing or just the jump from manual to auto for the transmission cooler).

I like the basic interior of the Hilux, hard wearing and I think it’s not as ancient as what car reviewers make it out to be (had the new BT50 and thought that was horribly cheap feeling inside, hated it).

Only thing is a wish you could spec vinyl flooring in the SR spec in the SR5.

And the stock sound system is absolutely horrendous. Zero stars for that.

And a wireless phone charger without wireless CarPlay. Zero stars again. Although a $100 wireless Aerpro usb dongle works great.

Workhorse – I've Just sold my 2011 SR 4x4 which never once let me down in all the years I'd owned it. I purchased the 2022 SR5 4x4 just to upgrade and mostly to receive a tax deduction for my business. I've been using it as a fleet work vehicle for a month now and have just really gotten used to it. Haven't 4x4 yet so can't stare how well the locking diffs… Read more

work but the SR was magnificent off-road so would only expect this to be the same or better. I'm getting around 7 litres not towing, around 10.5 litres towing a trailer with mower etc on the back. This truck is not modified, you will lose fuel consumption if it is, just be aware but I've been there, done that in the past and the stock wheels, tyres etc are fine for almost anything you would ever need. Drives well, handles well, feels nice and high to ride in. All the bells and whistles a normal human needs without being too over the top. I really like mine and expect it'll just go and go and go.

BUYER WARNING - DO NOT BUY A HILUX SR 5 – I'm the unfortunate owner of a 2021 Hilux SR 5 Dual Cab, my car has a vibration at approximately 850rpm. I've taken it to two different dealerships trying to get this issue resolved only to be told that the level of vibration is normal for my model/year. I've contacted Toyota guest experience only to be fed the same nonsense as the dealer. TOYOTA DOES NOT STAND BY ITS PRODUCT, DO NOT BE AS STUPID AS ME AND BUY A TOYOTA HILUX SR5 Show details

2021 Hilux - a woman’s review! – My husband and I needed a bigger car to go camping and do some small off roading. After a 6 month wait, our SR5 2021 Hilux model arrived. I’m a petite lady standing at 5’1 and had sold my 2016 Vitara for this Hilux. Definitely worried about having to drive it around! I personally only drive it to work daily. (into our little Cairns city) It… Read more

honestly has more safety tech in it than my old Vitara. It keeps me within the lanes (which can honestly be annoying sometimes if you’re avoiding pot holes.) Once the cruise control is set, it will literally speeds up and slows down and brakes for you (until you get under 30kms and then it turns off) and it's handy how it reads the street signs an posts the speed limit on the dash.

I can honestly reverse park it just fine. I haven’t tried parallel parking and I do have to get out and look to making sure I’m in the parking lines (but I’m sure that will come with time!)

I can’t give you any engine details apart from the fact that it’s really quite fast for a turbo diesel! I can zip right off in it.

I’m honestly trying to find the negatives of this car, but there really isn’t any so far. I’m not as excited about it as my husband and his friends tend to be, and I miss the cutestness of my Vitara, but overall, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to that Toyota trouble free motoring…..

SR5 Lemon – Purchased a SR5 From Downtown Toyota in Morningside. After being convinced by friends to change from a ranger to a Hilux. In the first 12mths a rattle was apparent from the engine but the couldn’t fix. The dealer said to monitor. I reported every time it went in for a service. The engine was removed from the vehicle several times and parts… Read more

changed but the noise was still there. At 100,000kms Toyota replaced the engine as the rattle was getting worse. The guest experience manager said “all cars make some sort of rattle and all sound the same” they still replaced the engine... go figure... At 105,000kms the Ute had a terrible whining noise coming from under the vehicle... Toyota replaced the torque converter and found the transmission had also failed. Toyota Guest Experience believe this is a common occurrence and that they don’t believe the vehicle is subject to a replacement. To make matters even more frustrating, they told me that the services would continue as per the service book, but the dealers would determine what service the engine and transmission would be due for as they have different kms and age compared to the other components. Toyota believes the car is worth more if I sell it as the Ute has a new engine and transmission... haha... not sure how that works... most people will steer clear of a car that’s had 2 major replacements in the first 3 years of its life. Toyota is yet to advise if they will compensate the loss or replace the vehicle.

Note: this vehicle has never been actually 4wding as I can’t rely on it.

Top Of The Price Bracket Of Utes Middle Of The Road Features – After being disappointed with the reliability of a Ford Ranger (PJ) and Mazda BT-50 (MKII 2014), I've purchased a 2019 SR5 Hilux. While I'd normally wait a few years to review a car (so I can see how it performs mechanically), I thought I'd do an initial review of the apparent highest selling 4x4 utility. Generally, I'm pretty happy with it at… Read more

present, however there are some strange things going on in the world of Toyota and Hilux.

Let's start with the good: I really like the look of it - The SR5 has the right dimensions, 18" alloy wheels look good and great front and back approach for 4WD. The car itself handles pretty good (albeit a little rough), even on dirt and with the standard boring Michelin's on it - They're not an off road tyre but they'll do for now. Headlights are great, with LED parkers / normal beams / fog lights and halogen high beams. I can see roo's shooting out at a hundred paces with them. Comes standard with chrome sports bar, tow bar receiver (no tongue or wiring), large multi-function screen which includes a sat nav. The cloth seats are comfy and surprisingly enough room in the front seats to move around (although not as big as a Ranger or BT-50). There's also cup holders galore - I've counted at least 4 on the dash and console and both front doors. Apparently, there's a 220V accessory socket (I haven't found that yet)! The interior looks fantastic, but I don't think practical (read further down). Like most cars these days, there's the standard cruise control, functional dash do-dah's (I do like the info on the dash which tells you how much juice the cars drinking, averages and lots of other things I haven't even had time to look at), down hill assist, diff lock. All the good things a 4WD'er & caravaner needs. And a surprise was a reverse camera (standard on Sr5's)! I'm finding using the reverse camera great as I can reverse park straight! What I'm not finding great is the build up of mud and dirt over the camera on the tail gate that spits up every day. There's lots of airbags for the safety nuts, middle rear hook for baby seats (and by lifting the back seat, 2 more access point at the bottom if you install them). There's also an air conditioned cooler box! Haven't tried it yet, but unless the cars running I don't hold much hope my lunch will be cold when I come back to it in 5 hours on a 35 deg day. It's also covered by a 5 year unlimited kilometer warranty - right up my alley.

The not so good: The suspensions stiff. It handles well and everything but you feel the bumps. It might soften up over time but I'm not sure. This time I got an auto box, however I spend more time correcting the selection down hills than I did in an manual! When the cars traveling downhill at around 70-80 km/h, the box will decide to jump back to 3rd and rev it's head off. Then it's hard to get it to change to 4th after the hill. The side mirrors are small - they're OK but a little hard to see everything in them. As for the 2.8L engine, I'm not sure if the juries out on that one. While it seems to be a little under powered, it keeps the speed up hill and off the mark better than my old Bt-50 which had a bigger engine. I am however, going to call crap on the fuel economy of 7.3L/100km. Regardless of what mode you're in (eco, normal or power - there's not much difference fuel wise between them), and not having much cargo in the car (other than some boxes of catalogues) the comparison shows up at 10L/100km. Mine consistently hovers around 10.8-11.2 no matter what I do (could be because of an auto box). This MAY be the case if you do 600km without stopping on a highway, but for normal driving averaging 80km, it's nearly 11L/100. Much more than my older larger, bigger engined BT-50. Also, the dash will show how many kilometres will be done based on your driving habits (smart). But by the time you get to an 1/8th of a tank, the fuel light only comes on when it says you have about 30km to go (which probably isn't the case). And I'd imagine you'd have about 80km to go by then. The stereo: It looks impressive and sounds pretty good. The bluetooth with phone works well. However, don't expect to plug a HDD into the USB port and play your entire 400GB of music files. Bring those expectation's down boy. The file system is limited to 10000 files, 3000 directories (whichever comes first) and 6 directory hierarchy (including the main root directory). So, if you have your files structures as root://band/type/album/cd/file type/ you're out of luck. If you have anymore than 10000 song, your out of luck. I worked it out at about 70GB is it's max. Why can't you just browse the directory like everyone else? Speaking of browsing - if you plug in a drive, it initially takes around 60 minutes to catalogue the drive before you can browse it. After that, every time you start the car it will take between 3-5 minutes for browsing to become active. For the interior, while it does look stylish (with the leather dash etc), I don't think it's real practical. After only a couple of weeks of driving on dirt roads, dust just sticks to everything - I mean it's attracted to it. I've never seen anything like it. Cloth on the door handles just doesn't cut it. While it may feel comfy new, they'll look and feel terrible after a few years. Hard plastic or vinyl would have been a better option. As for the premium steering wheel, I can say I'm not a fan of those two thumb rests. They just get in the way of where normal people put their hands when driving. I don't think the cruise control is intuitive. To turn it on you press the end button at the stem, now you select down (-) to set and (+) to reset. Flick the control lever forward to turn it off. Who thought this up? It's counter-intuitive to every other car I've driven with cruise control. Genuine Toyota bull bars are available and look good, but structurally I don't think they're in the same league as an ARB. Lastly, the take a dump switch. You need to manually dump crud when it builds up (if you do regular short trips). C'mon...really? You're telling me Toyota couldn't come up with a better solution?

Sometimes manufacturers add annoying "safety" features: I thought there was something wrong with the car when I first drove it home. Lane change was turned on (I drive country roads so I'm all over the road) and the things correcting me! That's been turned off now. Front of vehicle cruise control. While a novel idea, isn't very practical unless you want to follow a slow car in front of you. Every time you start the car, it resets itself to 3 car lengths (which is more like 5-6). You need to be aware and overtake ahead of time, otherwise cruise will slow you down to the car in front, so leave ample room to overtake. Collision alert! Concentrating on not hitting the car in front? No worries, collision alert will flash up a red sign and noise to break that concentration. I've nearly hit cars because I was trying to work out what that noise was!. The best one is not allowing you to use your contact lists or dial pad on the screen when the cars moving. It only works when stationary. Awesome move, now I have to pick up my phone and dial - get ready for the fines! I suppose you could use the voice control which works, sometimes as long as you get the command right. While there's a bit of room in the front, the rear seems to be compact (like a lot of the older utes PJ rangers, D-Max etc). I wouldn't put three blokes in the back comfortably and if you're tall, you'll probably end up with your knees around your ears.

Weird stuff: The body looks great in the day and reminds me a little of the large curves on older 60/70's utes. However at night, I'm constantly seeing reflections that make it look like it's dented!

I'm still enjoying the car and hopefully Toyota come up with some fixes for the radio, gearbox with a firmware update. I can live with it, just some manufacturers do it better and cheaper. But if the car can last after the five years with no major mechanical issues it will all be worth the other small stuff.

lack of knowledge or mechanical sympathy. I am talking about people having warped discs pulling an excavator (should've bought an F truck), high fuel consumption ( hey, it's 2t unladen, then you will put all your accessories and mud terrain tyres and cargo and can't get it under 12l/100km?) Yes, there will be mechanical issues, but Toyota is probably the best getting things right. If your vehicle always went to an authorised Toyota dealer, not been modified (tuning chips, etc.) they will always help. The ridiculous resale value of the HiLux only shows how dependable they are.

A great, honest ute – I have a 2017 SR5 4x4. It now has 165,000 kms on the clock and has been trouble free so far. Have been up to date with all services. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it lacks a little bit of power. I probably should have got a tune early on. That just me being picky though. GUN models are a lemon – Where do I start. Bought a 2015 from a Toyota yard here in Perth and only drove it 2/6 months because it spent 4 months being worked. Toyota ended up refunding my 37k after 6 months because I was not happy. EGR cooler cracked - car over heated. Auto transmission started slipping. Timing chain destroyed the cam gears. claim was a hybrid Corolla I asked for a hilux but they said it’s that or a rav 4 which wasn’t on site. Fuel usage is nowhere near claimed unladen and before mods and is steadily increasing. The car is now out of warranty as off January and there is a cam chain noise 4-6k repair. Forget servicing yourself the sump plug is on an angle above a cross member and the oil filter is in an even worse spot making servicing a complete mess with oil going everywhere. This is my second and last hilux very disappointed.

In terms of the vehicle itself, it is extremely nice to drive, quiet, comfortable and a nice place to be. My only gripe is the satnav is not great, but I used google maps so no big thing. All in all, I think, a great vehicle and a great company and dealer.

The car is ok ... when it doesn’t have problems – The 2017 models the have some known mechanical issues, however if the prevailing attitude at Toyota was attempting to work harder than ever for your business and rectifying issues one might have more brand confidence... but given the quite ‘breakable’ nature of this new Hilux, there are some unnecessary questions around the Hilux as the reliable workhorse. Show details

published problems with the dpf. Mine has been no problem, even when I lived in canberra as I drove about 15 kms to work. The only issues with it have been noisey rear brakes, but that is what you get with drum rear ends.....and that is about it, always reliable. Engine performance is adequate with a high degree of drivability with the power coming on at low revs I have a larger type boat and the hilx will pull it ok but it is a bit pedestrian. Economy about 9.5 and towing heavy about 12, Interior is nice and has lasted 100k well. All in all a hilux and worth it, by the way a very good truck, and a very good 4 x 4. Ride is typical dual cab ute, I have a canopy so it rides very nice, just need a bit of weight in them, you cant have a car like ride in the rear of these and carry a heavy load, no ute can do that. The steel in hilux springs is high quality japanese steel, so when one of these after market spring sellers say otherwise it is just rubbish, (particularly when they use cheap chinese steel) I got mine reset to match the canopy etc and they are excellent. Worth buying as you know what you get, ALL car dealerships suffer problems so you just have to be patient with the whole lt of them!

into four wheels.

-Drivability is good on the highway and city, doesn’t have electric steering but it’s light enough and sharp enough at higher speeds.

-Towing is easy (don’t have a caravan or a boat) but have tested pulling a trailer with a commodore on top and didn’t struggle.

-Reverse camera easy to reverse park.

Cons.

-Fuel consumption is insane! (Get 550-600km range) before fuel light comes on (before dpf recall)

-DPF! Huge issue, returned to Toyota dealership 3 times for DPF recall, last recall added a DPF burn and DPF regeneration system which chews up fuel while regenerating... (500-580km range now)

-Extra power would be nice. It’s enough to do the job but tends to be sluggish at some points, (hills, highway)

-Seats aren’t the best for long drives, it is comfortable first 30 minutes but numb bum after that. Touch screen sucks so replaced it with after market system.

-extra safety features would be nice especially for the price point it’s at but doesn’t bother me to much.

Overall I’m happy with the car, I love to drive it as my daily, will be considering tuning it for better fuel eco and power.

8L/100km and 9.5L/100km, however my fuel economy is at 14.5L per 100km. This is not localised to my vehicle, it's a known issue with Toyota but they don't make it public. I had my car serviced for the 10k and I asked the question "is there an issue with the fuel economy on the SR5's?" Yes, it's a real problem, we have complaints all the time. Their response is that they need to connect the car to a machine for the whole day to correct the issue. However it's not permanent. I decided to test it out as many people said that I do a lot of city driving which will be the cause, so I drove from Brisbane to Sunshine Coast and back, 220km and used over half of a tank. I got 450km from this tank. I drove from Brisbane to Tweed Heads and back a week later, I used 3 quarters of a tank, I received 440km from this tank. At one point on the highway I could see the fuel gauge moving down. I have never seen anything like this before. I have had every Hilux since 2004 and raved about them, this one I can't say I'm impressed. The lack of knowledge from Toyota themselves on the problem and considering you pay $60K for a vehicle you would think they would look at a permanent fix for this problem. I'll be doing my research next time, but I would say this is the last one for me.

Southside Toyota Brisbane is hopeless – I had my vehicle serviced on 23 Aug there. Before that day, there was smoking from the exthoust. Only 10 days later after the service, the smoke comes back again. Even the guy who called me from Toyota Australia surprised when he learned it smoked only 10 days after the service. Don’t go to Southside Toyota, don’t buy Toyota.  Show details

Spent over an hour read through, I just wondering is there a lawyer in this forum. So many problems for the new Hilux, something need to be done.

So far, so good – This is a daily vehicle; used for mixed driving. I purchased it after going for three years with a Prado that was a dog of a thing due to the DPF issues that plagued the experience (see my other review). I purchased this car because of the manual DPF switch in it. What I like about the vehicle so far is that it has a far better power to… Read more ·  2

weight ratio that means it is a very torquey engine and has good performance. The fuel so far is a bit of a downside, it seems to go through more than I wanted it to but I am only doing suburban driving so far.

The drive is spirited; not as lumpy or bumpy as I was lead to believe from all the car reviews. Overall, I've been impressed by it and hope that the DPF issues do not present itself!

Features I like:

Cupholders in dashboard

Interior lighting

Power to weight ratio

Power button that isn't really giving more power, just adjusting the throttle. However it's a nice feature

ECO light

Ease of functionality

Downsides:

Car phone cradle can not be fitted because the dashboard has no straight lines or places that inhibit other functions

Foot rest of left of drivers footwell interferes when using the clutch as if your heel is balancing on a small ball

Rear reversing lights do not illuminate enough - am having to have other fitted

220V not practical

USB charging points have low voltage so a phone needing full charge takes a long time

Lack of USB points - would prefer more

Avoid at all cost – Worst mistake of my life buying a 2017 diesal hilux, the new engine seems slower than the older model hilux and ride quality doesn't even exist. On top of this expect to be at a dealer every second day of the week for dpf issues, rust issues, gearbox issues, vibration issues, fuel consumption issues, quite possibly the worst dealer mechanics in… Read more

the history of the automotive industry who couldn't change a light bulb if their life depended on it let alone diagnose and fix issues with the car. The list goes on, and to note ive only done 13000kms and have never towed or been offroad.

DO NOT BUT ONE!!!, just look at the majority of reviews below and it should tell you enough about the car and why you should avoid it. If it wasnt on finance I would've sold it by now and never looked back.

A disgrace to the Toyota Brand – I agree with the review by Luke. Ute is gutless, thirsty and poorly designed. Back issues from the seats, yes. My 2008 Hilux with the 3Ltr motor was far superior Fuel economy is terrible, no where near what the 2008 Hilux could achieve Not to mention the issues with DPF sensor, suddenly the car starts blowing white smoke like its on fire,… Read more

people pulling up saying "there's a problem with your car"

Toyota's response "you will have to wait 6 weeks for us to order the new sensor"

Paid almost $60,000

Paid extra $3000 for a hard tonneau cover that doesn't lock and Toyota seem incapable of fixing it

Don't do it

Rust Problems on chassis on all welded joints – Taken back to dealer and was fobbed off as environmental because I live at the coast and tow a boat to the salt water. Last Hilux was 7 years old in the same environment and had no issue. I will take this issue further and hopeful get the problem sorted properly with Toyota.  Show details

Can't Fault – Love my new Hilux such an enjoyable drive, tows my 2.7 t caravan with ease. I'm in the mechanical game and I think they are the best utes on the market, certainly long-term as well, I see way less issues over the 100000km mark as other brands, performance, interior, looks. Very happy with my Toyota. Show details

Toyota Hilux 2017 SR5 TRD - Top of the Range – Amazing car - had it for more than 6 months and drives beautiful. Very proud owner of the TRD. I see people talk about fuel and all - they should get a smaller car like a Yarris or something - you can't eat your cake and have it too. I am happy with the service and product.  Show details
