Australian made Westinghouse fridge freezer – I bought 1 of the last units to be manufactured in Australia. It has been an excellent machine so far. I have moved twice. In 2019 and in 2022. The Australian units are excellent and I am not so sure about the imported units. I very much doubt if they would be built to the same quality. Show details

Black Tar ruins door seals – I also have the black tar oozing out of my fridge/freezer. It is out of warranty and I contacted cust care for tips to remove it and the cause. Was told it is black mastic and to call a technician to service it. Will never buy Westinghouse again

A good fridge with a huge but… – The fridge itself is great. Until we also got the black tar oozing out the bottom - 5/6years after purchase. At first, I thought it was because something had spilled in it because it was small. It got worse and both bottom door seals cracked and started to lift off the door. Which lead me to this site… After reading LOTS of reviews, watching… Read more

YouTube clips and speaking to two helpful tradies in a forum… I unplugged the fridge, took the backplate off and vacuumed out all the dust off the back plate, in and around the compressor motor, wiped the compressor fan clean. I got a small straw bristle brush and cleaned the condenser coils - then I re- vacuumed. I tried to get as much dust out of the bottom as possible. I manually spun the fan, it moved freely (if it doesn’t, it’s a sign that it’s dead/unhealthy). Turned the fridge back on and saw the fan moving fine. One other commenter said that the black tar is from overheating and our fridge was slightly noisier than usual - which led the tradies to think that there was a lot of dust underneath. There was.

Next, I have cleaned the black tar off with mineral turpentine and a BBQ skewer to really get as much off as possible. Someone mentioned this problem can come back and they use silicone sealant to prevent the black tar from touching the fridge/freezer seals - they have not written a follow up on how successful that was. I haven’t done this step yet. Have ordered new fridge/freezer seals to replace.

Have never had this problem with any other fridge and it’s annoying that I have spent all morning fixing this, not to mention last night spending 2 hours researching DYI.

But I also would prefer to DYI and spent $130 fixing it myself, than have a repair person come and charge me $700+ or spend another $2000 getting a new fridge. Wrote this review to hopefully help someone out and save them some cash. If you see the black tar, get onto it early and clean out all the dust underneath the back plate. Etc etc.

Almost 10 years of Fault free service – Bought the fridge in the middle of 2012. Only now Feb 2022 has it shown any signs of wearing out. The freezer stuggles to maintain -18 usually sits at -16 on a 3rd party temp guage and the fridge has turned into a slushie machine sitting around 0c most of the time while the compressor runs almost non stop. Getting a serivce tech out soon... Not… Read more ·  1

sure why so many reviews say this is so hard when it is a click away on their website these days. But apart from dropping and cracking the ice tray im happy getting almost 10 years out of the last Australian made fridge. If this issue will cost too much to fix, then its off to the tip and something new.. Sadly nothing aussie made will replace it.

Loved it very happy with it – The fridge is easy to use and we love the separate compartments, though it recently started freezing things on the fridge side. So I thoroughly cleaned it and found a frozen fruit bag blocking the freezer's vent at the back which solved the problem. Show details

Noisy, seals fail, sticky tar – How Westinghouse can produce such a disappointing fridge is beyond me. Seals split leaking tar after 4 years, replaced under goodwill and after 3 years they have split again oozing black tar. The fridge is noisy and not that energy efficient. The plastic shelves cracked after 5 years due to fatigue. Overall it’s a very average fridge indeed and… Read more

will not buy another Westinghouse fridge. Update: I got onto Westinghouse and they offered me a discount on either and Electrolux or Westinghouse. I took up the offer and bought a 4 door French door fridge. Beware their entry fridges have been cheapened with non adjustable shelves, silly ice makes and flimsy shelving. Have a good look before you buy!

Another black goo complaint – Like so many others I have this disgusting black goo oozing out of the bottom of first the bottom right of the freezer section, sticking and tearing the seals and not long after, from the bottom left of the fridge side...it is like tar and the only way I can remove is with WD40 and then within weeks, it is back. I would never recommend, nor purchase again a Westinghouse appliance after this experience Show details

Seal and black goo problems – The goo is causing the seal to loosen and therefore negatively impacting performance, especially freezer side. This has loosened the seal on both doors.… Read more

Also has cracked plastic rail that holds the seal in place. I have been cleaning the deposits of tar off the doors and the fridge/ freezer unit every couple of months but now the black tar needs to be cleaned weekly. This fridge has an obvious fault judging from the number of negative reviews on productreview.com. What action can be taken to address this issue ?

couple of years down the track and now the door will not shut or seal properly due to the re emergence of the black goo. Obviously due to the high number of people complaining about the exact same problem this is a manufacturing or design problem. I have emailed the customer care center, but if the problem is not fixed properly I am considering getting everyone together for a class action. Something has to be done. We pay good money for a brand name so that we can have a good product....not a faulty one. I won't be buying another Westinghouse product, that's for sure.

Making sound and black tar oozing at the bottom fridge door – Bought the refrigerator 2013, and noticed black tar at the bottom of the door where the rubber seal is. Leaking black fluid, damaged seal but still leaks – Purchased in 2012, the fridge has been leaking a black sticky liquid from near the seal at the bottom middle. it stuck to the fridge side seal and tore a hole. fridge/freezer is out of warranty but for a fridge that cost over $2k this should not occur. it causes condensation in the fridge side, and food is not being kept chilled properly which could be a health hazard. We need to have something done here not just get some tape and cover it as was suggested by our seal repair guy. I believe it is a manufacturing fault. Temperature is not consistent because of the seals issue

Leaking seams – Finally contacted by Electrolux who sent out a serviceman who repaired the leak. Leaking black tar like substance from seams at bottom of both doors. Also a faulty seal clip. Awful. Do not buy a Westinghouse product ever again – In 2016 I was having issues with this fridge. I purchased the extended warranty from Harvey Norman which entitled me to a replacement. supermarkets are wrong they just put up any use by date on there. We ended up borrowing a bar fridge to keep my sons made up formula in as our fridge was making him sick (he would vomit up his bottle an hour later) and had to regularly go shopping as we just couldn't afford a new fridge.

We have been limping along for 4 years with more and more black tar coming out and putting the door seals back in every single day to find out that this is a common bloody problem.

I started freaking out, realising with what is happening in our world, we need our food to remain fresher for longer. And we can't risk our fridge dying now. I was looking up the dimensions when I have seen all these reviews.

I will cross Westinghouse off the list now. My mum had one for 40 years. Never again. And I will make sure everybody knows about it. Including how many products Electrolux makes.

Plastic waste – First one was replaced under warranty due to cracking in the interior floor. Second one ate its way through a ridiculous piece of plastic built in obsolescence passing off as a door hinge. Once this goes the fridge door stops closing, the bottom of the door cracks and you have to replace the entire door to rectify it. If you're someone who fights our growing waste problem, they've still got you because you can't buy the doors any more. Show details

deliberately failing to Recall a Major Product Design Fault with all WSE6100 Refrigerators that leaks a black type substance which then goes on to destroy the double doors. The main remedy Electrolux Australia offers is that the consumer is forced to pay (at a special reduced price as a goodwill gesture) for a replacement fridge. If you refuse, then Electorlux will not do anything further for you. Consumer Laws stipulates, faulty design fridge means Manufacturer is liable to replace at no cost to consumer.
