Rip off packaging – So disappointed with the packaging of this cream. Same sized box with 2g cream in the tiniest tube. Same absorbidant price. I won’t be buying again on principle.. if you are going to give only half the product at least reduce the packaging accordingly. Show details

Swear by it – Love this product, and always have it handy. I find that it works best when you start applying it as soon as you feel that first symptom, before it even is visible on the surface. For me, it doesn't stop it from appearing from the surface, but the blisters are significantly less, and healing time is very fast. It is a little expensive, however… Read more

it's very effective, so I make sure I always have a couple of tubes available, so I can apply as soon as I feel one popping up.

However, if you're late in getting to apply it and the blisters pop up before you're able to apply, the effectiveness goes down and I don't notice any difference in the progression or healing process.

You definitely need to apply this product ASAP for best results. If you leave too long, it is ineffective.

This had no effect on me – I noticed no changes in the symptoms or duration of the cold sore. It did not prevent blisters from appearing. There was no reduction in pain or swelling. To make matters worse it tastes absolutely vile (some got into my mouth while I was asleep). I am resentful of the high price. Show details

Way too expensive, very small tube – In the past I have used a 5g tube with 5% Aciclovir in it for a reasonable price in one of the Chemist brand names. This Zovirax cold sore cream comes in large looking box in comparison with the tiny sample size tube of 2 g. Cost $14-50 from Chemist Warehouse. Way too expensive, when you can get more product for far less cost in a chemist brand… Read more

line. In the end, I bought the Nyal antiviral cold sore cream from Coles for about half the price of the Zovirax one. The Nyal one is 5 grams and containing 5% Aciclovir - but no burning with the Nyal one.

Excellent cold sore cream – I have used other brands in cold sore creams and they never worked. Then i came across zovirax. I thought it was expensive and the chemist sold me a cold sorecream that had same ingredients. Didnt work (dont know why and i followed instructions) so i got the zovirax branded one. And it worked. No problems. So now i dont bother with anything else - Zovirax is the only one for me Show details

Burnt and scarred my skin. Beware! – I could feel a cold sore coming and the chemist recommended Zovirax. This cream turned my cold sore from nothing into a horrible, ugly, painful scabby mess. It burnt the area and the surrounding skin. Took three weeks to heal and now my face is scarred. Don't use this, beware. Show details

Amazing product – This thing is amazing. I had felt a cold sore coming for a while. When it started to flare up I went to a pharmacy and the pharmacist gave me a triple action cream I had never used. 7 days later my sore was getting worse and crusty. I went back and got the Zovirax and within less than 24 hours my cold sore was completely gone! I carefully cleaned… Read more

away the crusty bits and there was nothing left! I felt like Indiana Jones when he pours the holy water on his father’s fatal gunshot wound that completely heals him! Thank you Zovirax. I will never doubt you again.

Probably the best there is – Cold sores suck but I find that this works better than anything especially if you get onto the sore early, have tried cheaper that chemists have said would work and contain the same ingredients but they just don't work as well or fast

Cant fault it – I used to sue Nyal cold sore paint which was very effective and suppressed the formation of blisters if applied in time. however it became difficult to obtain. Zovirax does definitely suppress the outbreak of applied as soon as it is felt under the skin and stops blisters forming for me. With my latest outbreak 2 weeks ago a chemist persuaded me… Read more

to try Famciclovir tablets. They worked overnight and the tingling was gone the next morning however beware 2 days later the virus broke out again and it took a long time for the zovirax to suppress it with the result that blisters broke out. So for me the jury is out with respect to the tablets. If anything I will take them immediately as well as apply the Zovirax and see how that works.

Agree that the change if weather can promote outbreaks, had my last episode when going from Perth 25 degrees to Canberra 10 degrees.

Bottom line is to take action the moment you feel any discomfort, no matter how slight in the lips and keep the product on hand

Did nothing!! – I always have used L-lysine as a prevention method, which helps. However a lump on my lip occured literally overnight, which caught me off guard. Never has happened that quickly before. L lysine no good if lump has already formed. I was after an antiviral tablet I used before, but the chemist had no idea what I was talking about and recommended… Read more

L-lysine only. I purchased Zovirax as a remedy hopefully. It didn't change anything! Cold sore formed as usual, continued to the point of busting and bleeding. Didn't heal quicker. Same as if I used nothing. Maybe it is different for everyone. But for $16, what a waste!

Zovirax Cream has worked for over 10 years – I have suffered from Cold Sores for 45 years: I have suffered from cold sores since l was just 5 years old from a simple change in weather causing outbreaks of cold sores on my lips, blisters and open painful sores which became even more unsightly after the Chemist told my Mother to smear Jensen Violet a dark purple solution all over my lips… Read more

that literally took weeks to wear off and which was more embarrassing throughout my school days than the cold sores themselves. In fact l have suffered so many cold sores throughout my life that the scaring from them have literally erased my lip lines in some areas.

I remember when Cold Sore Balm an anaesthetic cream came on the market, what a welcome relief that was, although it was white it actually numbed my painful swollen lips. Since then l have tried everything on the market and any home remedies including Compac patches, tooth paste, honey, salt water, ice and Brut Men's Aftershave Cologne which tends to sting like crazy and dries my lips out which then crack and bleed and it takes much longer to heal, however, Brut still serves it's purpose in the healing process if the sores start to weep or look like they are becoming infected l simple dab on some Brut and when my lips start drying out l put on a lip moisturiser to head off the cracking and bleeding stage.

Since, the release of Zovirax l have stopped looking for other treatments as l believe Zovirax although expensive absolutely works within days. Zovirax actually stops the virus from spreading, treats and heals the cold sore within a few days.

Unfortunately, l had to take one star off because Zovirax does not contain an anaesthetic which would numb the pain while it heals and the fact that Zovirax is way too expensive, $17 per 2 gram tube is rude; but it works!

So here is my treatment plan that works for me time and time again...

PLUS advice on Do's and Do Not's

AND Prevention that keeps Cold Sores away

COLD SORE TREATMENTS AND PREVENTION THAT WORK:

L-lysine:

You can buy L-lysine over the counter in tablet form, one a day pretty much prevents cold sores from forming.

If you run out of tablets make sure you buy more; it's like the virus sits inactive under the skin just waiting for a break from the L-lysine treatment so it can raise it's ugly head.

ZOVIRAX:

If you feel a cold sore coming on or you have a cold sore buy Zovirax from the chemist or supermarket ~$17 a tube; but you only need a little bit applied 5 or 6 times a day and the last application should be before you go to sleep (whenever you think of applying it really)

Zovirax actually heals the blisters much faster than anything else l have tried.

ICE OR COLD PACK:

If you don't have Zovirax and the cold sore is really burning and itchy get a freezer bag or similar and put some ice in it or some frozen peas and apply that to the area until that nasty burning and itchy feeling eases.

AVOID: Licking or playing with the blisters with your tongue, this tends to make them bigger.

Pop the Blisters or Don't Pop the Blisters?

This is a personal preference however,

l have found that by not popping the blisters only allows the blisters to grow bigger to the point of them sometimes joining together and becoming one big blister which takes a lot longer to heal, hence, l pop the bigger blisters and apply Zovirax straight away and they are gone within a few days.

SAFETY FIRST:

DO NOT have oral mating and AVOID kissing anyone when you have an active cold sore; they do spread as quickly as a peck on the lips from someone with the active cold sore virus and wash your hands if you touch your mouth by accident, this helps prevent spreading the cold sore virus.

PREVENTION:

Take L-lysine 1 tablet daily and try to avoid sudden drops in temperature, excessive sun or wind. Changes in climate conditions and temperature drops can bring on the cold sore virus.

Avoid rubbing your lips hard like we sometimes do to remove stubborn lipstick and avoid the hard bristles of a man's beard or regrowth, both of these things can irritate the sensitive skin on our lips.

Just be mindful of the cold sore virus and it will become second nature to prevent it from occurring.

didn't last upto 4 days – 2g of Zovirax cream didn't last for more than 3 days.where its container say's apply 5 times for 4 days.Yep!didn't use it more than one pump at one time my cold sores heals by 40%.I've realised later , other cheap cream are more effective for cold sore rather than buying these kind of expensive empty vessel.absolutey wasting money. Thanks

Zovirax is now $17 a tube! – Zovirax is getting way too big for their boots with the price of this cold sore cream!. The active ingredient is not rare or special (Aciclovir 5% w/w Cream), compared to the Pharmacy/Chemists own brand (Aciclovir 5% w/w Cream) exactly the same thing. The difference is the Pharmacy/Chemists own is 50% cheaper for exactly the same thing! (All are 5g tubes). I definitely won't be paying this extortionary price for this cold sore cream again.
