Cox Stockman Pro Ride-On Mower CR Series – G'Day , we've had our Cox Stockman New Era CR series for 5 years now. It was S/H when we bought it from a lawn mower/ chainsaw dealer ( Perth Hills area WA) , so I'm not even sure of its age. We got it at 'mates rates' . It was fitted with a new cone and fully serviced. We have a 12 acre property Central Wheatbelt WA , mostly flat, but some… Read more
undulating & rough patches, some boggy bits , & ' bouncy bits ' some ruts etc. and a winter creek . Over the 5 years we've had it, I've mowed our 12 acre property ( plus our neighbours 5 acre patch) every year with out any serious mechanical issues. (Do your maths on that one) I really have put it ( and me ) though some serious bone shaking terrain .....but its keeps going. One of the tie rods came off one year, (the nut came loose, ....(not me :) ) ... .....hardly surprising) but that was soon easily fixed in about 10 mins. One of the screws that secure the plastic bonnet to the hinge came loose. I just tightened it up . Its had one new battery & one puncture since we've had it. Still on the same set of original tyres. Its not like I do burn-outs !! I have yet to change the blades. They still look fine. When we bought it, the bonnet was a bit faded. Its must have been stored outside in a previous life. I now keep it in a shed out of the heat. I put oil on the bonnet, it livens up ...for a short time.
Having no suspension is hard on my back & neck after many hours of mowing and bouncing around. The ' auto cut out' function on the seat is really good. It has reminded me to disengage the blades before getting off on more than on occasion.
The deck height adjustment is easy. The powerful ' Briggs & Stratton ' motor is easy to start, but it does have a good healthy battery, thats important . I regularly give it a 'once over' with oil, oil every moving part with WD 40, clean the air filter , change oil etc. to make sure everything keeps working.
The live drive can be noisy . Like brakes on a car that have worn down to metal. But I'm used to that now.
The light did work, but I think the bulb has blown...or it got shaken to bits, not that I mow in the dark anyway.
The beer......er... .cup/ drink holder is handy :) *
The seat could be a lot more comfortable, thicker foam perhaps , or some springs underneath.
The steering is a bit loose. I have tightened up a few nuts & bolts here and there, it has improved.....slightly. But I think the steering box is now due for replacement, but...... it steers.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the Cox Stockman . Although I have taken it where it shouldn't go on many occasions , but just remember , its a mower.....not a tractor or a 4WD .
Service it regularly and it should give you many years of service.
( *do not operate any machinery after consuming alcohol* ....only consume alcohol after the job is done :) :) :) )
Appalling experience – Whilst some aspects are good (Briggs & Stratton engine) the quality leaves lot to be desired. I lost steering and found that a hose clamp held a plastic drive in place was broken. There is a pinion in plastic too, cracked. Took to the rep and parts were ordered two (2) weeks ago. So far nothing has been delivered, no news, and I am without a… Read more
lawnmower.
Customer service is crap, not a courtesy call, impossible to get hold of.
If you think of getting a lawnmower, buy one that parts and service are assured. I would no recommend a Cox to my worst enemy.
Cheap and over rated – Take a look at the Cox warranty before you buy and check out the warranty exclusions. These include the Chain,Cone,Belts and some assorted but undefined bolts? Why would you buy a product that will not even warrant the main components of a mower for the first 12 months. Add to these negatives a plastic bonnet and seat skirt which scratch even on… Read more
the least contact with branches of shrubs and your new Cox product looks fairly shabby after a few mowing outings.
Perhaps the worst feature is the cutting height selector which does not provide sufficient options for the conditions you are cutting under. All in all not the best design feature set for such an expensive mower. Briggs and Stratton reliabilty. At least that has not varied. Bad Warranty is the most worrying
Plastic Fantastic – My parents had a stockman while I was growing up on a farm in Victoria. Back then cox made great machines. All steel plate and they were quite strong. We used to mow out irrigation channels and put it through its paces. Given this great experience, I recently purchased a new stockman without doing much research. I would have to say this is the… Read more
worst purchase I have ever made.
Everything is either plastic or wafer thin steel. The steering box let go within a month. Upon inspection I found that the reduction gears in the box were plastic and had simply let go. The forward/reverse pedal again plastic let go also within a couple of months.
The cutting deck was so thin that when I clipped a stick it flexed and put one of the blades through the deck. After about 6 months the list of problems was through the roof. Also our local Cox dealer was extremely rude and over-priced. This is no reflection of Cox but it didn’t help my situation.
My advice would be to have a really good look at these mowers prior to buying. They may be ok for a 20x20m patch of manicured lawn but they sure aren’t as good as the originals. Buyer beware. Looked great. But looks aren't everything.
Love it,, Its tough, reliable and easy to use – I've had my 21hp stockman Pro for 6 months on 30acres of hilly horse farm. Its done everything Ive thrown at it from mowing very rough grass, to dragging round a mini trailor full of rocks, going up pretty steep inclines, towing a 100l sprayer and broadcast spreader to do several acres of horse paddock...plenty of power, fun and straightforward to… Read more · 1
drive. Makes my life so easy! the only thing I've managed to do to it is get three flat tyres, taking it places I probably shouldn't have gone! It goes along way on a tank too...one small problem I had was reading the fuel level...I find the fuel level hard to see in the little window visible from the drivers seat. If I open the bonnet and look on that side I can see clearly.
So far I'm very happy with it. Powerful, Does the job, good on fuel, easy to use. Hard to see the fuel level in the window
