plastic-y and the carafe feels as though it will shatter at the slightest bump. Actual design of the product is poor. You cannot remove the carafe lid, so after washing it's difficult to leave it to dry - I balance it, inverted, on the strip between my sinks, with the lid open and dangling into the sink below. The coffee filter has a handle which sits inside the filter, so that when you want to take the filter out to empty it, you have to fish around inside the used coffee grounds to find the handle, and picking the handle up flicks grounds all over the place. Coffee itself is okay, and I like the delayed start so that I can get up to a freshly brewed pot, but when it inevitably breaks (reading other reviews doesn't fill me with confidence) I'll spend a bit more and hopefully get something a bit sturdier, without these design flaws.
