using the ceramic wheels and having the knife pointed down onto the 'v' of the wheel, but once you see how well it sharpens you will love it. It produces a consistently sharp edge with very little skill required. This is much different than other types of sharpeners which require a high degree of skill, or simply don't work. Just fill with a bit of water and start with the coarse wheel and then move to the fine wheel. After I used it a couple times the blades were well aligned to the angles of the Global and they sharpened with minimal strokes. The only odd thing was a bit of vibration or jumping on the pull back. But in the end I've never seen any results other than excellent. We liked it so much we bought on one on ebay as a gift. Excellent results with minimal skill required, long lasting none
