We bought the inbuilt Scandia for our new home, had it professionally installed in an existing open fireplace as it was designed for that! Now we… Read more
can't have anymore than one peice of wood burning at any time as the firebox keeps banging and scaring the crap out of our dog! We need to have the fan running all the time (which is noisey) to try to stop the firebox from expanding too much. I regret buying this product very much. We had a Scandia free standing fire in our last house with no issues, what a pity this one is so rubbish!
Scandia Edge
I'm honestly surprised by the poor reviews. My Edge 70 does an excellent job heating our large open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, it's… Read more
around 400m³ and it gets too hot at times! The unit was already installed when we bought the house eight years ago, and it's been solid ever since.
It takes large bits of wood easily and only has two settings, hot and medium, there isn’t a low setting so you can't choke it down to last all night. Unless you load it up just before bed, there’s usually not much left burning by morning. That said, the two settings do produce noticeably different burn rates.
One issue I’ve noticed is a fair amount of smoke leakage when starting the fire, like with the door wide open and trying to get the fire started. I’m not sure if that’s normal or if the flue just doesn’t draw properly until it heats up.
Also, the door attachment/arm that holds it open broke, but I contacted Scandia and they responded quickly letting me know where I could get order a replacement. I’ll fix it as soon as someone inevitably burns my current makeshift door holder that looks suspiciously like a bit of kindling.
I've added a few pics, one has a can for scale (no I'm not American, I just love Dr Pepper I don't get it a lot and thats the only can I had on hand) and in the can pic you can see the offending silver hinge/arm that no longer auto locks open, behind the bucket peaking out is my trusty door keeper opener that I jam in the silver arm.
Anyway, I know they are not making these anymore but I wanted to put my 2 bobs in.

Reliable, lower priced heater for last 8yrs – As with the other reviews I have had my share of problems, but none insurmountable.- I live in a cold area of Victoria, our coldest has been -8 and… Read more
we usually get a -5 or -4 once or twice a winter. Yes the air tube to keep the glass clean failed pretty quickly, I never replaced it as I felt it was a gimmick anyway. And yes the fire bricks break, including the top one but I hold it up with a 10mm diameter steel rod placed where the air tube used to be. Other fire bricks I just leave them where they are, despite the cracks they still do the job. All wood heaters produce dust and ash and this one is no different, just remember to crack the door open and let the air rush in, a lot of dust will be taken up the chimney. You'll still get dust just not the copious amounts as if you swing the door wide open. They say hardwood only but to be honest I have burnt all sorts of rubbish in mine, cedar, cypress, wattle, radiata, banksia, eucalypt even old pallets. Completed 8 winters of service and before the 9th I will replace the bricks with new ones; they're not cheap and not the 'general' ones in Bunnings - you have to order them ~$400 including the cast iron grate - I'll replace that too. It warped badly so I turned it upside down and got longer out of it but it is now broken so I'll replace it. Replacing the bricks every 3yrs and the ash grate every 8 or so is pretty normal with wood heaters like this I think. I typically don't buy a lot of wood, just collect it myself from wherever so this expense never worries me.

air flow within the firebox results in an always dirty glass door. When you open the door wether it be done slowly or not fills the room and house with that strong fire smoke smell. The one positive thing I can say about this unit, it looks aesthetically pleasing when not in use and is fully cleaned. We are a family who have been raised and brought up with wood heaters so this is not a new form of heating for us, this review is specifically to warn buyers of this particular unit.
