The tech reviews are positive but the solution is disappointing for the high-end price tag and returned to store.
Our car was damaged on our driveway and so I wanted to get some hassle free and effective cameras. I decided to avoid experimenting with the cheaper options out there and after reading positive tech reviews went with the Arlo's based on the advanced detection features, 4K image quality and easy installation.
The solution has a base station which requires a wired ethernet connection to your internet router. However, this detracts from wireless feature as you need to find a suitable place for the base station unit and have a ethernet cable and...power supply. My internet router is in my lounge which equals more clutter and wires to maintain. Power outlets are a scarce resource in my living area so fingers crossed you can find a spare one to permanently use and make everything look aesthetically pleasing unlike in my own case. To make matters worse, the Arlo provided power adapter sits horizontally and takes up 3 spaces where it only needs to take up one. This is extremely annoying. Otherwise, downloading phone app and pairing is relatively straight forward and presented no particular issue. Fitting cameras is straightforward although I ended up doing this twice over. The kit comes with 2 identical cameras and 2 different styles of mounts. One is a swivel type mounting that physically attaches to the camera. The other is a magnetic housing. Neither are secure and the camera can be removed very easily. As the cameras are around $400 each this is a concern. I therefore fitted a camera under the eaves of my second storey house. It seemed like a good choice as it was well out of reach and gave a good view. However, what I found is that although these cameras are 4K the focal length is such that they are short sighted. Whilst they provide great detail immediately in front of the camera, for anything more than a few meters away details such as faces and number plates cannot be made out. I therefore had to remove and reinstall the cameras lower down where they could be removed or interfered with. I believe Arlo have a 12 month theft replacement scheme and whilst the cameras are associated with your account cannot be used by another person, however this should not be necessary. Anti-theft tethers are available on ebay. The Arlo comes with a 12 month cloud subscription which allows for 2K storage but not 4K without additional cost up plan upgrade. It is possible to insert an SD card into the base station for local storage but Arlo seem to make this as inconvenient as possible to encourage costly cloud subscriptions - around $180 per year. App settings are confusing and not well explained. I have decent phone and wifi but viewing the cameras via the app is very laggy and you are unlikely to get 4K image quality when watching live. In fact just about every feature option warns it will either affect battery life or picture quality. There is not still capability in 4K mode. The motion tracking capability which auto zooms on movement is a waste of time. It is not that great at tracking motion and digitally zooming reduces the picture quality. The AI motion sensor supposedly can tell the difference between human and animals. This is a cloud service that requires subscription after 12 months. I would not rely on this and I don't believe there was a way of suppressing alerts based on human or animal. You still get the alarm and can see for yourself whether it is a human, animal or something else that has caused the alarm. The camera features activity zones so you can choose which areas of the image to detect movement and which to exclude. For example, the camera at the front of the house partly covered the road. I set up a zone for my lawn and another for my driveway. It would be nice to ignore cats and receive alerts from humans. And know if the movement was on the driveway or lawn but no, alerts do not distinguish between zones. Also, I found that the excluded areas also triggered alerts and on my other camera at the rear of the house could not detect movement in some of the areas covered by the camera despite them being within a zone, and again detail is lost a very short distance away. My teenage son managed to enter the house at night with a group of friends without triggering the motion sensor so my confidence is low.

The Worst, The Most Expensive and Unreliable
I have 6 Arlo Ultras that I purchased over a year ago. I should have walked away when their product launch failed causing them to have to re-launch the Ultra again a month later in 2019. The cameras are so unreliable.
The issues started right out of the box with pairing the cameras with the base station. Some cameras just wouldn't pair, and I put them back in the box, ready to be returned when they decided to randomly pair one day when I tried just before returning.
Activity zones do not work. I repeat, activity zones DO NOT WORK. Arlo is aw...are of this and there are so many threads in the Arlo community website about this. I get false notifications outside activity zones which is a nuisance. My friends who have Ultras have confirmed the same. I have even had instances where two cameras in totally different areas of the house were showing the same video feed! Go figure! This happened once last year. Battery life is not 6 months. It goes down in about 2 - 4 months even with the least traffic. I have my system disarmed during the day and armed only during the night.
Buggy, frustrating and expensive
Don’t waste your time. The arlo software is terrible. The support is awful and to continue using decent features you need to pay $129 a year. Apples software is far superior but arlo is not fully compatible with HomeKit (specifically, HomeKit secure video).
Terrible cameras and customer service
Not 4K HDR heaps of problems
This is a review of the replacement 3 camera system as they had to replace the first system. Got these replacement cameras eight months ago and I have had nothing but problems again. And still numerous i.e constant false alarms, cameras not recording, cameras randomly zooming and staying in that mode, constantly disconnecting and having to be re-added to the base station. I had a one year Arlo Smart Premier plan as a free trial on purchase and they changed it halfway through the trial and added an Arlo Elite plan a...nd I have lost 4K HDR. As it stands now you have to pay almost $230 a year for the cameras to record and live stream in 4K HDR. They advertise the cameras as HDR but you only get it if you pay for it each year as a subscription. If I had my time all over again I wouldn’t touch these cameras with a 40 foot bargepole. They are way overrated and riddled with bugs. I have Arlo Customer Support on speed dial as barely a month goes by where I don’t have to ring them. Do not waste your money!!!
System came with no guide paperwork of how to setup unable to connect to many phones unable connect the modem etc
I’m unable to connect my cameras due to insufficient and no guide or paperwork of how to set up as if I knew this I would not have purchased it as the system is not an easy system to connect.
The idea is great
The camera are great and easy to set up and eat to view on ph .Customer service is non existent we have a faulty camera which goes off all the time but won’t record
We have several sets of cameras. All Installed at different times on different houses
The first lot are past the 12 month free storage
But now they are taking money out for all 3 sets even though the others are still in their free period !!!
We keep raising cases with customer support and nothing is sorted
Only works well on 4 k but you have to pay for the planafyer 12 months if you don’t pay you have 2 k
So so disappointed in this with proper customer support they could have a great product

ARLO CAMERA Battery won't recharge - customer service non-existent.
Camera works fine. Unfortunately, one year after purchase my camera's battery won't recharge. Called help ph# - nothing. Rang out. Sent them an email , through my account login so that they would have my info, nothing. Over a week paying for my subscription with no use of camera. The battery should be replaced without question. At this point I have a massively expensive system with zero value.
I wish i would of read the reviews prior to buying. It looks like i could of avoided a $1100 mistake.
As previous reviews posted, if i could give Arl...o a zero - i would of! What irritates me even more is that JB HiFI is able to sell many of these products and washes their hands completely of their responsibility. JB HiFI deserves half the blame here. Do not buy. Almost two weeks and nothing from Arlo. Time to take my complaint, along with all the other complaints , to the ACCC.

Great potential but fundamentally flawed product that is not fit for its intended purpose
Do not buy this product.
I’ve now had the Arlo Ultra for 16 months from the initial release in March 2019. It’s an intensely frustrating product... great in parts (hardware, 'advertised' features) but fundamentally flawed (software, reliability, product support).
For those that want something that ‘just works’ – avoid. Something that is marketed as a security product should be reliable all of the time. It isn’t.
+ Great image quality
+ HDR in high contrast light is excellent
+ Decent infrared night vision quality
+ Identifies different types of motion (but only with a subscription)...
Do not buy until they get their things together
1. Pairing cams with the hub is a pain
2. Activity zones never work
3. Various hard to explain problems such as, 1 paired camera is getting triggered by audio & drains battery fast
Purchased in April 2020 for A$799.00.
So much room for improvement
I don't know if this is today's technology limitation but Arlo Ultra has a lot to be improved.
We have had them for about a month now and so far I've noticed the following issues:
1. Activity zones never work
2. Motion detection is not fast enough; usually turned on after a few seconds
3. Live steaming is not really real time; typically with 3-10 seconds delay
4. When you steam 4K and turn on the torch in the dark, night vision often fails to turn on
5. When the camera is pinched to zoom in, sometimes you can't live stream or even connect to the camera
6. Motion detection range is all over the place. You have to adjust the height of the camera and proximity to the spot you want it to monitor hundreds of times. ...
Purchased in June 2020 for A$1,035.00.
Never a day without a problem. The greatest waste of time & money just trying to get them to work!
Too many problems getting them to work. Such a waste of time and money. I couldn’t connect to get the 12 month free subscription , so I bought a SD card to try and store events, which only works sometimes ! The battery’s would lucky to last a few days. So, I turn them off when home to save battery life!
At 70 years old I don’t want to climb up a ladder every few days to charge the battery’s in the cameras!
Meanwhile, my old cheaper cameras keep on going!! So much $ spent on a expensive security system that is useless!
Good for 12 Months then it’s $$$$$
Purchased 12 months ago and have had to return twice and get new system due to different issues, one with recharging and the other with camera that stopped working. It effectively has been a great system however now the 12 month subscription that came with it is up, it is $30 per month per camera to keep it as is, if no subscription you only have live feed and notifications which is useless if there is an incident as you don’t have ability to record anything and once the camera connects after notification of movement it could all be over. So effectively is going to cost $1000 annually to keep the system going.
Rubbish System with Worse Support
Read this and other reviews and if you still buy an Arlo Ultra, you only have yourself to blame.
I bought one of these systems in December 2019, thinking it only had a small range to cover and therefore I thought it would be up to the task. I had to take back and replace one camera, because it wouldn't recognise its Hub. That probably should have been a warning, however I persisted. Various problems have arisen with the system since it was installed; such as, the batteries barely last two days. The idea they last for months would be right if th...
This is HORRIBLE product!
Do me a favour please! DONT BUY IT!! I have been using for a year, most of the time is disconnected, poor quality image.... If you read another review below, I had same issue with them. They are not ready for this product, why they are putting on the shelf to sell?
Waste my money and it is not cheap!
Please think again before you buy this rubbish!!

Terrible - If i could give 0 I would.
This system is terrible. I bought it as an upgrade from an Arlo Pro that's a few years old. The cameras are so temperamental that they don't stay connected, the range is appalling compared to the Arlo Pro I have. Tried move the base station all around the house and just couldn't get it to work properly with all 3 cameras from anywhere - they would just try and connect and then fail. My old Arlo Pro was fine with 5 cameras.
Clear from looking online that this is a common issue with this system. It's too expensive for these issues and for it not...to work properly at all. I took it back for a refund the day after. The other issue is that you're paying for the Ultra 4K cameras, but the subscription it comes with is the lesser one only allowing 2K recording. You have to purchase a full subscription (i.e. not just pay the difference) to "Elite" level to use the cameras properly. Just terrible. Arlo has gone seriously down hill when older technology works far better than new. Avoid avoid avoid.
I have the Arlo Ultra. If I can do anyone a favour DON’T BUY IT. Anyone that reviews this as a good security system doesn’t need it as a security system just a gadget and/or is getting paid for a review. I’m a domestic violence victim. I can put my hand on my heart and tell you that the system was put out with known serious defects and system faults but ultra clever marketing. However, I’ve been living with it now for months and it fails on every sell factor that I researched and was impressed about trawling through YouTube and credible reviews...like Choice. All. When I contacted Arlo about what I thought were just individual system defects Arlo played a well rehearsed game of sending me through impossible hoops to prove what I now know through the Arlo community are systemic defects & faults with its system, software, cameras and batteries. Arlo do nothing to fix or help with these known defects they take the money knowing the percentages of people just giving up & the flashiness of the gimmic of their product. The batteries do not recharge, the cameras do not pick up a car being stolen right in its focus lines but will send 782 notifications of a tree moving next door outside of its sight line on exactly the same day. It fails to record events on video but will photograph an ‘event’ after everybody has left the scene due to a delay in capture and record. Consequently, of absolutely no use at all. In fact, potentially a worse situation because it appears as though you’ve deleted footage. It’s a kids gadget not a security system and Arlo know it. They stop communicating with consumers once they identify your system is Ultra because they know it’s defective. Don’t waste your money on this sparkly kids gadget if you need proper security. This makes things even scarier because you get woken by warnings a tree is moving and silence when a man is breaking in your house right in front of the camera and it’s not recording a thing.
Unreliable and full off bugs
I have had the Arlo Ultra system for 9 months and have had heaps of issues. Looks great on paper but doesn’t perform as stated. Very poor wifi range which causes all sorts of issues, local storage doesn’t work as stated by manufacturer and won’t let you change settings, my cameras have totally stopped recording and also no live streaming anymore. Read the Arlo community forum and the faults are well highlighted there by many owners.Same issues reported to the manufacturer but no fixes.
Beware: Ultra is an expensive subscription-based sales model
The Ultra is sold with 12 month membership, but what the packaging doesn't articulate is after the 12 month membership runs out, the cameras become almost useless. Even the notifications are 'dumbed down'. So you purchase this really expensive camera system and then get 'scammed' into having to pay an absurd $22 a month just to keep using them. Be warned, the Ultra is a subscription-based sales model.
Also, the video quality is very poor, definitely not 4k. For example, from 20+m away, you would not be able to see much detail, like accurate...ly read a number plate. They are also very slow. It takes 10-20 seconds for the motion notification to come through to your device and if you then want to look at the camera, it takes another 10-20 seconds to load. The live stream video also lags and the lag gets worse the longer you watch it.
