Poor Remote control – Purchased Aldi 58: TV in May 2017. The remote control functions stopped working while in warranty [about 9 months]. Aldi replaced the remote control unit under warranty. The 2nd remote control unit only lasted about 9 months as did the first one. Now they want me to pay $30 for a new one which from past experience will only last about 9 months. … Read more
After lengthy research there is no universal remote compatible to the Braun TV. The TV can only be used with the remote control.
Taking the gamble – TLDR: Good price and warranty; solid construction and immense size; poor image quality with limited 30Hz output at UHD and obvious ghosting on fast moving images. Introduction: The creatively named 'ATV58UHD-0718' from Aldi electronics brand Bauhn is a 58", Ultra HD (3840x2160) LED TV that at time of writing is priced at $555 Australian… Read more
Dollars through Aldi's 'Special Buys' promotion. The price point was hard to beat, and the allure of a 60-day satisfaction return warranty allowed for peace of mind, so considering I've been looking for a new TV I decided it was worth the risk on purchasing from a brand that I had previously no experience with.
Construction and connectivity:
Construction is sound, with steel used for components that benefit from its increased rigidity, such as the feet that hold it up, and glossy black plastics for the less structural bits. The back panel includes ports for digital audio (optical), left and right stereo audio, composite video, component video, line out, two USB 2.0, and four HDMI 2.0 (one with ARC).
Output and display:
This leads me to the display itself: the user manual states that all HDMI 2.0 ports support 8-bit 4k@60Hz output, however despite my efforts with my frankly overpowered gaming PC, the TV itself refused to output anything higher than UHD 30Hz, making any and all movement of my computer mouse a slow and frustrating chore. As of time of writing I am yet to contact support to learn if there is something I should be doing to fix this issue for myself, however to this point I have attempted with multiple HDMI cables and in all available HDMI 2.0 ports with no success. The panel itself is bright and displays colours with respectable accuracy, including deeper blacks than I was expecting for such a cheap set, however backlight uniformity is an issue with washed-out bright sections appearing in the corners of the display during dark scenes, and a single bright 'spot' in the middle-right side of the panel that may just be a manufacturing defect. Lastly, during my first few hours with the unit I began to notice the the images displayed on screen became noticeably blurring during fast motion at all resolutions and refresh rates (especially in games). I loaded up Netflix and began to watch an episode of Rick and Morty, a cartoon with defined black lines and sharp contrast, and discovered that the panel displayed obvious pixel ghosting, meaning that the pixels themselves do not respond fast enough to the input from the HDMI, leaving faint but visible remnants of previous frames over the top of the current image. Although pixel ghosting is less noticeable in more natural images with less defined contrast, the slow-shifting pixels do lead to a blurrier and less crystal clear picture than you would expect from an Ultra HD display, as colours from previous frames blur over and smudge the details on the current.
Verdict: Purchase if you can live with the following...
Pros:
-Well built
-58" is a lot of TV
-Surprising contrast ratio and colour accuracy
-Low input lag for games
-$555, if you can get one
-60-day satisfaction return warranty and 1-year manufacturer warranty
Cons:
-Backlight bleed in dark scenes
-No UHD@60Hz output
-Image ghosting

Brought 1 on a Saturday, have returned 2 units by next Saturday – Both TV have suffered a backlight bleeding. Backlight bleeding is the lighter than normal areas in the screen (mostly in the corners) when you are watching a dark/black video. Not happy and arranged for a replacement unit Replacement have same issue. Called Tempo - irrepairable. me burned, from the effort of driving to the store, setting it… Read more
up, frustration on the issue, packaging it back for return and driving it back to the store.
At least I got my money back.
And I learned a little on quality of TV.
XLNT value – I purchased a Bauhn 58" 4K Ultra High Definition LED LCD TV including Google Chromecast ATV58UHDC-0517 I agree it's not in Samsung or LG league but better value than any of these with a Chromecast Ultra attached. I have a Samsung Smart TV and until I get NBN in my area uterlly useless and it costs 4 times the Bauhn. The UI/operating system… Read more
is easy and clear to use, to me it's very similar to a Sonic T.V.
Has HDMI/ USB ports as one would expect.
The Sound is as good as my 4 year old Samsung Smart TV, will be better attached to a sound system as all flat panel Tv's are.
Has a setting to play ads quieter than normal volume!
Picture quality pretty good but not as dynamic as as my Samsung but better than the Kogan 4K smart tv I purchased and gave to St Vinnies a month later.
I recommend the Bauhn TV's and quite happy with it, can be 1st TV and makes an xlnt 2nd tv, game tv or holiday house tv and with chrome cast attached it's better than a smart tv as you can watch anything that you can get on your smartphone/ tablet/ computer providing you have internet.
It can be your main TV with Chromecast no doubt!
