Strong Machine – Had this machine for 3 years and worked it hard. It has done the job well. Just had the spring in the clutch break. Contacted BBT and they had one to me within a couple of days. Installed it and back into my fire season preparations. So decent machine for the money and great parts back up by BBT. Show details ·  2

Fabulous price but – I have been using brush cutters regularly since 1984 so i have a fair amount of experience. Over that time i have used a variety of 2-stroke brush cutter but never a 4-stroke. So when the manufacturer of my latest 2-stroke changed the cutting head design which resulted in a poorer cut, and non of the generic heads would fit, I thought it time to… Read more

try a 4-stroke.

The BBT 4-stroke brush cutter comes at the remarkably low price of $259.00 and that includes the line trimmer head and a saw blade and a standard bush cutting blade.

The brush cutter arrived in a timely manner and was easy to unpack and assemble.

However, it only came with four pieces of line. This brush cutter does NOT use a spool of line but has a proprietary designed head that take two pieces of pre-cut line at a time.

So I ordered on-line over ebay a packet of generic line pieces. It wasn't until they arrived that i realised that the BBT head will only take their line pieces.

The BBT head works on a "ratchet" type system so as you feed the line piece in it grabs the line because the whole way down the line it has serrations. [See the attached picture]

BBT do sell replacement lines but they aren't cheap and a pack of 60 cost me $55.00. Now the instructions do mention to avoid rocks, fences timber in order not to damage the line pieces.

However I live in an area that once had volcanic activity and rocks are an unavoidable feature.

I have found that I am replacing the line pieces after about 30 minutes of cutting. It takes about 90 minutes to cut my property. You do the math!

It is VERY easy to start, it is much quieter than a 2-stroke and I actually think it is lighter. However, it comes with moulded hand grips and i have found that after 30 minutes it can be hard on the hands, so gloves are a necessity. It uses marginally more petrol than a 2-stroke, but not having to mess around with 2-stroke fuel is a bonus.

I have found that it does not cut as cleanly as any of my previous 2-strokes I often have to go back across parts for a second cut. Sadly, most brush cutters allow the bull handlers to be adjusted on the run, so the angle of the cut can be adjusted. The BBT requires you to carry a tool and adjust 4 screws, but that's not all, the handles are in two pieces so each have to be adjusted separately yet, put at the same angle. It can be done, but that is annoying.

They say you get what you pay for - and on one hand you get a 4-stroke at a damn good price, but on the other, my experience is that its cut isn't terrific.
