Very fast boil, long life but beware – Very fast boil, long life but beware; as mentioned numerous times - the filter (why it it there? - to filter outgoing or incoming water??), which is a removable stainless steel mesh held into a slot with a plastic edge - will notoriously deteriorate and you MAY find fragments of plastic in your cup. Personally; I'm not AWARE of ingesting any, as I… Read more

drink coffee so couldn't see them anyway, but likely I have, in small quantities.

It seems the model is discontinued now - likely for that reason, and I can't seem to find replacement elements, which seems to be why it's finally died. I would say, aside from the filter; this breville definitely outlasted several other more expensive brands we went through that had an average (heavy) life of a year or less. SO; I WOULD buy another Breville for that reason and its fast boil alone, but will be more vigilant on monitoring the plastic filter!

Agree - needs to be recalled – I had the same issue with the shards of plastic breaking off - also took me ages to work out where they were coming from. This needs to be recalled! – For weeks I have been occasionally finding small shards of sharp plastic at the bottom of my drinks - some long and sharp enough to pierce the intestine (they are not much different to glass). I could not work out where it was coming from – thought it was coming through our water supply. I saw all the cracking in the kettle but (thought I) felt… Read more

all the inside surfaces and couldn't feel anywhere the plastic had actually broken off. Found it last night - it is down the very edges! It is a miracle that none of my family have not ended up in hospital. I guess there is still chance one of us has an issue in our gut which has not become apparent yet. This is one scarey kettle!

I googled just now expecting to find a recall notice that I had missed seeing - not so - but I see LOTS OF OTHER REVIEWS saying the same thing so am SHOCKED there has been no recall or warning to chuck a kettle with cracking of the clear plastic parts.

Not sure when I purchased this (2-3 yrs?) - I see I have to enter a date to submit this so will have a guess - as I have used these kettles for years & always replace with the same one

Nice Looking Kettle – I've had the Breville kettle for more than a year. Its worked really well. Not as quiet as it states but it does the job. This kettles spout does not leak unlike other ones I have used and its exterior is very easy to clean leaving it free of finger prints/ marks. So far, an excellent kettle – We bought this on the quiet /rapid boil advertising and so far it ticks all the boxes for us.No problem with taste as others have referred to,We boiled a full kettle then tipped it out and made tea, no problem, we both drink black tea so we feel we'd have noticed. Quick and Oh, so quiet after the noisy Russell Hobbs we had, had to boil it in commercial breaks so we could hear the TV.This is a dream.

Died after four years – I bought a new Breville BKE590 to replace our old Breville Filtermaster which lasted an impressive 17 years. I assumed that the BKE590 was anywhere near as good it would be a worthwhile purchase, but it ceased working after only four years of light service. Clearly they don't make them as well as they used to.  Show details

What a cluster.. this product has safety issues and should be recalled – Well, when I first bought this, I paid a premium to buy something that looked good, had decent ergonomics, and was quiet. It had a good plug, a push button lid, and a nice ding at the end of boil. However, 2 years on, small shards of sharp plastic are breaking off from the water indicator windows and a couple have ended up in poured water. I… Read more

have no idea how long this has been going on for, but upon close inspection a lot of the plastic has cracked off.

The shards are sharp enough to do harm, and I really believe this product needs to be recalled.

It also becomes ridiculously loud very quickly - noisy again after a few boils after a thorough cleaning with vinegar (which quietens it down).

I'm about to start the process of getting it replaced under the Consumer Guarantees Act but I believe that a product recall should be initiated for this particular product, as it isn't immediately obvious when the plastic starts failing, but the shards can be very sharp.

Not happy with Breville and their Customer Service Dept at all! – Have been using Breville products for many years since the 1980s. When a kettle dies, we replace it with another and so forth. Similarly with their toasters etc. Bought a Breville BKE590 kettle as it was the best of their range at the time (paid over $100 at The Good Guys). Last September, when we dished out some rice (used boiled water to make… Read more

rice from kettle), we found a couple of large pieces of 'glass' in our 8 year olds plate. We thought it was from the Basmati brand of rice, but later realised it was from our kettle (water indicator) - as I had a piece of the same looking glass in my mug of coffee.

Contacted Breville, and they claim they had heard no such events with other kettles.

Told me to buy a new one either from them or a retailer as it was just outside the warranty period. In fact, the price they were offering me was the same with some retailers (although they claimed it was a good deal).

First they said to deal with my place of purchase. So i did - The Good Guys (TGG) were happy to change and give me a new kettle and return this to Breville. When they called Greville for an authorisation number (as the kettle was out of warranty but clearly a materials defect issue) - Breville said 'no' as they would not cover the cost of the new (or old) kettles.

I then asked Breville officer (in front of the Good Guys store manager using their phone line) to send me in writing what the options there were - but to date, i have not received anything. I sent them my original email with photos of the kettle on 15 September 2015 and even made 3 phone calls to Breville.

I asked them what Australian Standards was used for sourcing the material used for the 'water indicator' glass - as they said they manufacture to Australian Standards. He said they did not have to tell me what codes they use re manufacturing of products.

When i googled the model BKE590, to my horror, i noticed many other people have been having the same issue of broken glass coming out from the Greville kettle water indicator. This in fact says there is a defect issue with the material.

One would not pay top dollar (Greville's best kettle at the time - and the replacement model is still high in price) - to get glass defects within a few years.

I have an old kettle from my university days of over 20 years - and it still works in the shed.

I AM NOT PLEASED with the way Breville have gone about this.

They cannot expect me to pay for another Kettle - when i purchased their top of the range model kettle from a reputable retailer, who was then stopped from helping me with a replacement, as Breville threatened them with no authorisation number, meaning the kettle would be at their (TGG) own costs etc.

Further, when i asked the customer service person that i'd like to speak to a manager as he could do anything further, a lady called saying she was the manager. In fact, when i mentioned this to Greville at the good guys, the other man told me that she was not a manager but just another customer service officer. Not happy that they pretend to be managers to get rid of customers who call with issues.

Breville seem happy for a customer to continue using a defective kettle, which they were aware of similar other cases, yet told me there was no such thing as water indicator breaking or being defective at all - and happy for my young family to continue using this defective kettle - and not offering a replacement kettle ,of similar or better quality.

I told Breville that I purchased this high end kettle, as it was fully stainless steel and not a transparent type (like they also have) to prevent my two young kids from getting excited seeing the 'blue' light come on - and pulling it down.

Breville - please contact me to sort this issue as you said you will send me something in writing and i haven't heard from you at all. Kindly also send me a letter to confirm that you haven't heard of other similar cases as you mentioned, (although i see some reviewers below have contacted your customer service centre, - the same place i contacted and i got no help).

I am not interested in you taking my kettle away for 6 weeks to have your research lab look at it - and then in the mean time, I have no kettle to use to have for my daily chores.

Breville - please email me (rfminch@gmail.com) and please give me a reference number to quote, when i call you. I do not wish to repeat the whole issue to another officer. I was not given a reference number to quote previously.

We live in Sydney, where the water is very clean i.e. no scaling issues or salinity or high alkalinity probs.

Breville have been aware of this issue since April 2014 (from this website at least) - and yet told me that they have not heard of such as issue with broken fragments from the glass water indicator in people's cups/ mouths etc.

With manufacturing companies - we are not suppose to use defective type materials which may cause danger to lives or people swallowing glass pieces that break off from your equipment.

Broken glass – Have just discover glass is broken in ours as well when I got a piece in my mouth. Looks like it has been cracked and chipping off for a while as lots of missing pieces. Horrified to think we and the kids have been drinking these fragments. Customer service didn't seem to phased by it and said no when I asked if it had been happening to other jugs. They did say they will replace it,

kettle. We've had it for a little over a year and the water windows have started to fall apart from the inside. Sharp pieces of plastic have broken off. I realised this after I felt a small piece in my mouth while eating my pasta. We used the kettle to boil the water. This is unacceptable and dangerous.

NB: We have had the kettle for a few years now (can't find any paperwork - maybe got it from points on one of our cards) and the kettle still works fine. I didn't notice the bits that had broken off because the water gauge (which on the previous models used to light up) doesn't have a light so i never saw the condition of the window. It wasn't until i noticed a bit of the plastic caught between the kettle and the filter when i was cleaning out the kettle that i realised it was falling apart. Please refer to pics to see condition of plastic window that looks like it has been nibbled along the sides and also a lot of horizontal cracking.

Fragments of clear plastic breaking off into kettle water – OMG im drinking fragments of plastic in my tea and coffee. I have had the kettle for over 2 years. Im finding sharp shards of plastic in the bottom of the kettle. The filter cover is quite loose and lifts up at the bottom when pouring. The kettle is very quick to heat the water but the watts is very high. not impressed at all its time to look for another one.

Not Quiet! – This kettle was ok, it lived 3 years and has just now konked out. It was not quiet at all.. I would even go as far to say, it was the loudest kettle I have ever owned. Apart from its loud noise, it was satisfactory, but 1.7ltr is quickly emptied.. maybe Breville's measures are smaller.. it just doesn't seem to last long and I feel like I'm always filling it up. easy simple to use kettle loud!

It's not quiet! – I've had this kettle a few years now & while it operates ok there is a couple shortcomings with it. Firstly it does seem to take a long time sometimes to shut of when it has already reached boiling point. It may boil very vigirously for 10 seconds or more depending on how much water is in it. Secondly, the lid on it doesn't sit flat & seal… Read more

properly allowing steam & heat around the sides.

Thirdly, the reason I originally bought the thing was it was meant to be quiet, it's not. I've used $30 kettles at work that are much quieter than this. It makes so much noise I have to turn the volume up on the TV to hear whats going on, which was what I was trying to solve in the first place. I should have taken it back.

Most highly overrated Breville product I own & I like Breville gear. Very dissapointed.

If you want a truly quiet Breville kettle get the BEK820 model instead, I bought one for the inlaws & it's a much better kettle. Looks nice & it boils water as required Boils too long, lid doesn't seal, & the bugger is noisy. BEK820 way better.

Didn't switch off – Looked like a good product with a nice style. We tried it out and the second time we used it the switch off function didn't work. Unfortunately many "good" brand names are no longer producing the quality of items they used to. Back for another go at this one – We are back. We had this kettle for around 3 years before it died and we bought a great looking diamond shaped Sunbeam. Negatives included early fading of the black plastic lid component (to near white) and de-laminating of something to do with the switch. It is a few years ago but I think it was the blue light around the switch and suspect they must put some sort of transfer over that to make it blue. Those things could be picked up to make it a very nice long term keeper.

But there was a larger negative. We will now see if the last relative short experience with it was out of the ordinary.

I wondered the same thing with the short-lived Sunbeam now just demised. Why? Why make such a substantial stainless steel, non water contact element type object if you don't want it to last. Couldn't it be made of something biogradable, paper or something to give these mean lifespans? This is a nice jug and solid enough to last 50 years. Why not? It is either the element or the connection between the incoming wiring and the element which lets these down and my guess is that that would have to be deliberate. It could not cost almost anything in comparison to its purchase price to put what just about amounts to a busbar between the two for good longevity.

If this one dies in a year or tow I will build my own. Looks good, Sounds good, Cooks good Didnt last long enough

Not quite at all – As title, this is the kettle that will only last 12 months, and even then it doesn't do a good job at all. A quiet kettle that isn't – As others have said, this kettle boils quietly after the first few boils, but after that the magic is gone. I was really quite excited by the first boil and thought "wow I have found the answer to not waking everyone in the house up when I boil in the morning". I then had to boil a few loads of water to get the bad taste out (understandable, as I… Read more

probably assume there are chemicals etc on the internal components during the manufacturing process). So by the time I boiled probably the third or fourth load of water the volume started to increase. Then the next day the volume was clearly louder. After having boiled probably the tenth load of water in say, day 3, the volume was at basically the same level as my old kettle. I packed it up and sent it back to the online seller (which had no problems with the refund process whilst they commented "we know of this issue").

Perhaps there are bean counters or a legal team somewhere in Breville that are hiding behind a technicality of some sort like "When it reaches the end of the boiling cycle and the bubbles are forming, it is technically 7.623855% quieter than the three leading/competing kettles on the market and this can justify calling it the Quiet Kettle on our packaging". Or perhaps that the part of the boil which is at the beginning or middle of the boiling cycle isnt technically the 'boil' and they aren't actually trying to make that part quiter, just make the end part when it boils quiter and that is justification enough for them to say it is 'quiet boil' technology. In either case, it is a farce.

Either its vastly more silent than your average kettle through the entire boiling process, and for a reasonable amount of time in the lifespan of the product, or it isnt. If it isn't, stop deceiving us consumers by telling us it is "quiet boil". It isn't.

If I had this problem after the warranty period, say after 12 months, I would happily throw it out and buy another. Lasting just three boils (probably one day of use in many households) is a joke.

Breville, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Boiled quietly on first two or three boils. I liked the relatively quiet volume/sound of the bell when the boil is finished. As loud as any other kettle after the first few boils.

the little dinger that goes off when its finished boiling must have come loose because every time I sat the kettle back on the cradle it would let out a little ding, and again if I picked the kettle up quickly. Moreover, I tried to review the product on Breville's own site and they have conveniently invented a way that won't allow you to review unless you are logged in- I was logged in and kept telling me I couldn't review it.

I've contacted them twice about my issues and have had no response whatsoever.

So- my advice- don't buy this kettle if you think it will stay quiet- and don't waste your hard earned ona gimmick. Even the person that sold it to me at Good Guys said their products are now very "hit and miss" as they no longer made here, but in China. Performs as advertised – Bought this to replace a very noisy Russell Hobbs stainless kettle (pre quite boil technology). This is an identical kettle as the Ikon without the illumination but with water level on the side. Takes 1min to boil 500ml cold tap water and nearly 6.5min to boil 1.7litres. Good for awhile – The quiet feature didn't last long before it boiled like any other kettle. I purchased this kettle 6 months ago and noticed it was leaking water about 2 months ago. It became too dangerous to use when I found it leaking from the on/off button and sitting in a puddle of water. I returned the kettle for a refund as soon as I found the receipt. Easy open lid. Easy to fill. Initially quiet. Cordless. Leaking water. Became noisy over time.
